25th Anniversary Celebration: IPCR to Train 1 Million Youths in Conflict Management this Year

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has unveiled an ambituous plan to train a million Nigerian youths in basic conflict management.

The Director General of the Institute, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, made this announcement while hosting executive members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) on a courtesy visit.

He described the upcoming training as a significant milestone, saying: “This year, the Institute turns 25, and to commemorate this, my bold vision is to equip one million Nigerian youths with fundamental conflict management skills.

“The training will be digital and entirely free—participants only need internet access to log in, complete the courses, pass assessments, and receive certification.”

He added that this initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu by addressing key national concerns such as inclusion, security, and foreign policy under the 4D framework.

He equally said It aims to enhance the understanding of government policies related to conflict resolution among young Nigerians.

Highlighting the crucial role of the media in conflict resolution, Ochogwu said: “The media is central to our work. If you want to drive change in any society, the media’s role is indispensable.”

On his part, the Chairman of DICAN, Mr. Frederick Idehai expressed his association’s interest in partnering with the Institute.

He stressed DICAN’s broad representation, stating, “We are a network of over 60 journalists covering Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies, and the wider diplomatic community.

“Our members cut across print, electronic, online, and wire services, ensuring balanced and professional coverage of international affairs.”

Idehai also underscored the discipline and professionalism that define diplomatic correspondents, stating that: “Diplomacy requires decorum and expertise, and as journalists, we uphold these values in our reporting and engagements.”

Nine Injured in Kwali Farmers–Herders Clash

Nine persons sustained machete injuries in a clash between Bassa farmers and Fulani herders in Gomoni Village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the fight, which broke out on Aug. 9 at about 3:30 p.m., followed alleged destruction of melon and maize farms belonging to the Bassa community by cattle.

It was gathered that the Nigeria army troops
along with joint team of operatives, and vigilantes were deployed to the scene following a distress call.

Six Bassa and three Fulani victims with varying degrees of machete cuts were taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital, Kwali, for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored, while investigation was ongoing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the wedding fatiha of Aisha, daughter of Shehu Aliyu, an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria, and Muhammad Jalal, son of former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna, at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The solemnisation, led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, alongside other Imams, featured prayers for the couple’s blessings.

Vice President Shettima stood in for the bride, while Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu represented the groom, culminating in the presentation of the dowry and the formal tying of the marital knot.

The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki, Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Emir of Borgu, Niger State, Muhammad Sani Dantoro among many others.

Unidentified visitor dies suddenly at Niger Government House Lodge

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the sudden death of an unidentified man who collapsed and died at Government House Lodge, Minna. Zagazola learnt that the incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 2, 2025.

Sources said that the deceased had visited House No. 8, Government House Lodge, in an attempt to see Mr. Sammy, Chairman of Niger Foods. However, upon meeting his host’s absence, the man suddenly took ill.

Medical doctors were reportedly contacted from the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, for urgent attention. Unfortunately, by the time the doctor arrived, the man had already passed away.

Following the report, a team of police operatives from GRA Division visited the scene. The body was photographed and evacuated to the IBB Specialist Hospital Mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
