NEMA donates relief materials to flood victims in Niger
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) donated relief materials to flood victims in Niger on Thursday in Minna.
The relief materials were presented by Dr Onimode Abdullahi, Director, Special Duties, who represented the NEMA Director-General, Malam Mustapha Ahmed.
He said the donation was part of the continuous collaboration between the agency and Niger government.
The relief materials are 2,500 bags of 10kg rice, 2,500 bags of 10kg Maize, and 2,500 bags of 10kg Beans, 100 kegs of vegetable oil and 200 cartoons of seasoning cubes.
Others are 300 bags of salts, 900 bags of 50kg cement, 100 bags of 25kg nails, 300 bundles of roofing sheets, 100 packets of zinc nails and 6,000 pieces of textiles.
Also in the donation are 6,000 prices of Guinea brocade, 6,000 pieces of men’s wear, 7,000 pieces of children’s wear, 7,000 pieces of women’s wear and 3,000 prices of plastic buckets.
Three thousand pieces of plates, 3,000 pieces of plastic cups, 200 pieces of spoons, 200 pieces of sanitary pads, 200 cartoons of toilet soap and 100 sets of four-in-one cooking pots are also part of the materials.
On top of that are 100 cooking stoves, 2,500 mattresses, 2,500 insecticide-treated mosquito nets, 2,500 nylon mats, 2,500 blankets and 2,500 bath towels.
Ahmed said the intervention was to assist flood victims to get back on their feet and restart normal lives, adding that the Federal Government was concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of the people of the state.
He appealed to the state government to take disaster risk governance to the grassroots through the setting up of Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) in all council areas.
He also appealed to the state to set aside a predictable funding to the state’s Emergency Management Committee and the LEMCs to enable timely intervention and the saving of lives in the event of disasters.
Responding, Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari and NEMA for providing support to the flood victims.
He assured that the relief intervention would go a long way to alleviate the plight of victims.
The governor said the state government was making efforts to ensure that communities in flood prone areas were relocated to higher grounds and called for Federal Government’s support to that effect.
He also appealed to NEMA to visit the affected communities to assess the level of damage caused by flood to enable the agency to give more support to victims.
Gov. Bello was represented at the presentation by his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso.

Suspected Repentant B’Haram Insurgents Burn NDLEA, NCS Checkpoints In Borno

A group of suspected repentant Boko Haram insurgents, on Wednesday May 1, 2024 stormed the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service checkpoints at Kasuwan Fara, a suburb of Maiduguri metropolis, chasing away the personnel on duty and setting ablaze all structures at the checkpoints.
The incident, according to investigation by Zagazola Makama, followed a fierce encounter between the suspected ex Boko Haram combatants and the police at the Kasuwan Fara Divisional Police Office.
The suspected repentant insurgents, reportedly wearing military uniform, had pounced on the police office to forcefully set free their eight colleagues arrested at the suburb over criminal activities bordering on dealing in hard drugs.
The arrest was made on April 24 during a raid carried out by the police on the notorious spot at the criminals-ridden Kasuwan Fara.
Due to the rise and persistence of criminal activities and sinister operations by drug peddlers comprising dismissed military personnel, repentant insurgents and other hoodlums, who assemble there to conduct nefarious activities, the area had since been earmarked for closure by Borno State Government.
The April 24 raid, where the eight suspected repentant insurgents were arrested and 426 bottles of spirits such as dry gin confiscated, was conducted to sanitize the area, pending the final closure.
The arrested persons were detained at the Kasuwan Fara police division since the day of their arrest.
Subsequently, at about 7:40 am of Thursday, May 2, a dozen of the suspected repentant insurgents in military uniform, stormed the Kasuwan Fara police station in an attempt to rescue their arrested fellows.
The Divisional Police Officer alongside his men were able to repel the attack while the perpetrators fled.
Consequently, the assailants, in an apparent transfer of aggression, reverted to attacking NDLEA and NCS personnel checkpoint along the Maiduguri-Gubio road Kasuwan Fara, where they burnt down the checkpoints alongside the sandbags heaped on the road and fled the scene.
Borno Police Command spokesman, ASP Kenneth Daso, who confirmed the incident, said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the attackers, and the arrested eight suspects have been transferred to Anti-Crack Squad Div HQ for further action.

The Federal Government has condemned the killing of 14 years old Nigerian, Daniel Anjorin at school in Hainault, East London, United Kingdom.
Daniel Anjorin was stabbed to death even while dressed in his school uniform in Hainault, East London, on Tuesday by a man who went on rampage with knife leaving four others injured.
The Chairman/ CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri- Erewa while condoling with the family of the 14 years old Daniel Anjorin on his murder, in a statement by Head of Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, described the incident as very unfortunate, sad and gruesome
She condoled with the family of the deceased and the Nigerian communities in the United Kingdom (UK), praying for the repose of the soul of the deceased, whose life was cut short on Tuesday.
Dabiri-Erewa said she is optimistic that drastic measures will be used to make sure that the culprit who is already in police custody will be punished accordingly.
