Borno registered 495 of sexual and gender based violence

By: Bodunrin Kayode

Borno state has registered 495 cases of sexual and gender violence from January to November this year.

Equally at least 200 of established rape cases  were registered last year against this year’s lower figure.

Making the revelation to newsmen yesterday, state coordinator National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Borno state Jumai Meshelia  said that a large chunk of this has been dragged before the courts already for prosecution.

To further enhance the investigation of rape cases, Jumai a practicing lawyer called for an urgent installation of a DNA testing machine to ease their stress in traveling to states with such facilities.

” in the cause of solving unwanted pregnancy problems, the commission is used to take samples to other states that have such facilities.

” On the recent rape case in which an NGO staff was charged N50,000 and allowed to go for over speeding, I want to assure you that we shall not relent on the matter until justice is served for the victim”

Barrister Jumai who visited the Borno state council of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) on an advocacy visit noted that rape has been an issue of concern to the commission adding that its sad that many of the culprits try to escape from prosecution.

“This year’s advocacy which has already started has taken the commission to the House of Assembly and the Federal High Court in maiduguri.

” We have also related with both women and youths groups, traditional leaders, Nigerian bar associations NBA and the Federation of women lawyers FIDA.

“Others include health facilities, schools and the government house to spread our messages of advocacy.”

This year’s human rights day would be celebrated on the 12th of December instead of 10th as usual.
