UK Seeks More Ways To Build Stronger Trade and Investment With Nigeria

British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Mr Jonny Baxter, was in Enugu State to attend the inaugural edition of the state’s Diaspora and Investment Roundtable, hosted by the Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah.
The stakeholder roundtable was an opportunity for high-level discussions on how to advance viable investment, boost trade and create more economic opportunities in Enugu State.
Delivering the opening remarks and highlighting the UK’s new trade scheme, the British Deputy High Commissioner, said: “My thanks to the Enugu State Government for putting together this timely gathering, which I hope will deepen investment and trade in the state. The UK wants to encourage UK companies to invest into the region. Building a stronger and more conducive business environments is crucial to this, and we look forward to working with the Enugu state government to do so.
“The UK’s new Developing Countries Trading Scheme harnesses the power of trade to help Nigeria, including Enugu State achieve its private sector-led economic transformation agenda. The UK is keen to maximise uptake of the DCTS. Crops such as cashew and plantain predominantly farmed in Enugu and other south eastern states, could be among the products exported to the UK based on market demand in both Nigeria and the UK.”
The Enugu State Investment Roundtable was attended by development partners, senior-level executives from public and private sector, and other domestic financial institutions.
Also in Enugu, on Thursday (31 August, 2023), Chevening Programme Officer, Boma Amieyeofori facilitated a workshop at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to teach participants how to apply for the UK’s fully-funded Chevening scholarship.
Speaking during the workshop, Boma Amieyeofori said: The Chevening scholarship seeks to provide a fully funded Master’s Degree scholarship for Nigerians with aspirations to deliver change for Nigeria. The scholarship has built an international community of people who are committed to working together to creating a better future. We do this by bringing together inspiring individuals from around the world and supporting them, through education, to achieve their goals.
“The Chevening application will open on the 12th September for a period of eight weeks; and I encourage individuals who are passionate about driving a positive change whether on a local, or global scale to apply.”
During his visit to Enugu state, the Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Jonny Baxter also met private sector businesses from the Scholars Center for Commerce and Industry – SCCI, and former Director General, Southeast Governors Forum to discuss business opportunities for both the UK and Nigeria.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, was in Enugu State between June 27 and 28 of June for high-level discussions with the state governor, key stakeholders, civil society, business and traditional leaders, in the state on how to attract investment, boost trade and create more economic opportunities.
The UK through the Department for Business and Trade is positioned to provide access to UK expertise and investment partners across priority sectors of the state.

Troops arrest terrorist informants, logistics suppliers in Sokoto

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have arrested two suspected terrorist informants and logistics suppliers in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended on Sept. 4 during a fighting patrol to Yaka village by a quick response team.
The suspects, according to the source, are in troop custody for further investigation and action.

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have repelled terrorist attacks in parts of Sokoto State, rescuing a driver and preventing further abductions.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that on Sept. 3, at about 6:12 p.m., troops of 8 Division, while on a fighting patrol along Sabon Birnin–Isa Road, engaged terrorists who attempted to block the route.
“The terrorists were forced to flee after a fierce exchange of fire. Troops rescued a driver conveying frozen fish and assisted in towing his vehicle to Sabon Birnin,” he said.
The source added that later, on the same day at about 11:30 p.m., terrorists invaded Tungar Makera village in Wurno Local Government Area and kidnapped four locals before fleeing.
“Troops pursued the terrorists but could not make contact. However, on Sept. 4, at about 8:55 a.m., locals accosted seven suspected terrorists in Kaura village, Shagari Local Government Area.
“Unfortunately, four of the suspects were lynched by a mob led by Yansakai vigilantes before troops arrived. Troops rescued the remaining three suspects and handed them over to security authorities for further action,” the source said.

Troops arrest 3 suspected kidnappers in Niger State

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have arrested three suspected kidnappers in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended on Sept. 4 when local vigilantes in Dukku town handed them over to troops on routine patrol along the Rijau–Duku axis.
The suspects were identified as Mohammed Mohammed, 30, Babe Sanda, 25, and Buba Matilo, 25.
According to the sources, the suspects confessed to abducting two locals from Dukku town and taking them to a terrorist hideout in Duku Forest.
The suspects are currently in troop custody for further investigation and action.
