BOSU: A Fast-Growing State University in Nigeria

State universities are emerging on the educational and academic map of Nigeria to quench the taste of knowledge in order to contribute to nation-building in teaching and learning to improve the standard and quality of education and research, hence quality educational service delivery in their full-baked products, graduates.
Borno State has suffered the devastating blows of the insurgents, and insecurity challenges are the major concern of the state. However, to address these challenges, the state remains focused on her pursuits for higher education. The government established Borno State University in Maiduguri (B0SU). And recently, NEWSng was invited along with some newsmen by the Information and Public Relations Department of the university, headed by Mr. Garkuwa Mohammed, for a valiant speech and press conference by the outgoing vice chancellor, a fine scholar of repute, Prof. Umar Kyari Sandabe, who has made his mark in Bosu.
The university was established by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2016 but began her academic activities of teaching and learning on March 7, 2019, focusing on objectives, especially her vision of “to be a first-rate institution anchored on and defined by excellence in teaching, learning, research, and innovation, as well as outstanding service delivery for the growth and development of society.”
Interestingly, Bosu has good academic infrastructure that speaks volumes within the span of five years of her academic activities from the 17th October 2019/2020 session with thirty academic programs in four facilities, namely: Arts and Education, Social and Management Sciences, and Faculty of Science, with 647 matriculated students in various departments studying for their degree courses.
The pioneering Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umar Kyari Sandabe, and his management team have made it possible for the university to scale up the needed standard requirements of National Universities Commissions (NUC) accreditation for all the academic courses to fully commence, especially the College of Medical and Health Sciences that was approved last year (2023) to run MBSS, Radiography, Physiotheraphy, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, and Health Information Management System.
Prof. Sandabe’s five-year tenure has also made the university a hub of academic activities and an oasis of teaching, learning, research, and innovation, with a harvest of rich lecturers with the core objective of molding and grooming students in character and in learning.
Every member of the academic section of the university, in her wisdom, meets from time to time with staff and the student body with the aim of maintaining a standard of academic excellence, discipline, and a good moral standard. Therefore, Bosu, as a community, has a tight security system in place. NEWSng observed that everyone is security conscious, with ears and eyes to the ground.
The university has achieved what some universities, both state and federal, could not achieve in terms of academic programs and infrastructure—some completed, some ongoing. The College of Medical and Health Sciences, Mechanical Workshop, Entrepreneurship Center, and Mass Communication Studio were all completed. NEWSng was among the team of journalists for the on-the-spot assessment of these academic facilities.
The secret to and beauty of Borno State University Maiduguri lies “in her mission and the progressive-minded management team under the leadership of Prof. Umar Kyari Sandabe,” said one staff member. Her mission is “to serve as an institution for intellectual development whose ideals are to train men and women to acquire appropriate skills, abilities, and competence, both mental and physical, as well as inculcating the right type of values and attitudes for the well-being of society in general.”.
Therefore, the mission is clearly expressed and captured in her Moto, written in Arabic as “Al-ilmu laisa lahu hudud,” translated as knowledge has no boundaries. This is why Bosu was able to spread, register, and announce her presence among her finely baked graduates, who came from various states of the federation.
Impressively, Bosu has established academic relationships and partnerships with some universities, both home and abroad, such as the University of Lagos, the University of Ibadan, the Obafemi Awolowo University of Ife, and the University of Maidugur. Across the shores are the Alliance of Islamic Universities of Africa in Pakistan and the State University of Bangladesh. We are facilitating with the recently appointed acting vice chancellor, Prof. Haruna Dantoro Dlakwa.

20 Nigerians to Study on Scholarship at German Prestigious Institution

Twenty Nigerian Students have been offered Scholarships to study at the prestigious European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), Berlin, Germany.
This followed the acceptance by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar’s acceptance on August 28, 2024, a special scholarship for twenty Nigerian students to study at German institution.
The scholarship programme was announced at a special dinner organized in his honour by Lars Windhorst, a German entrepreneur and co-founder of Sapinda Group and owner of the fashion company, La Perla, in Berlin, Germany.
The event which was held at the exclusive China Club in Berlin was attended by leaders from the private and public sectors including the President of ESMT Berlin, Jörg Rocholl.
Accepting the scholarship, Tuggar thanked Lars Windhorst for his kind gesture and said that the scholarship would create an opportunity for shared learning and experiences for the beneficiaries. He extolled ESMT’s reputation as one of the best business schools in Germany and Europe.
The Minister also invited the dignitaries to come and invest in Nigeria highlighting the remarkable strides being taken by President Bola Tinubu to reposition Nigeria and create an economic haven for foreign investors.
He noted that Nigeria holds enormous investment opportunities and cited the microeconomic reforms the Tinubu administration has embarked upon, particularly the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the unification of the exchange rate to boost the economy.
The Minister promised that qualified Nigerian students will benefit from the scholarship opportunity which he said would contribute significantly to the development of the knowledge and skills of the beneficiaries needed for Nigeria’s development drive.
Tuggar also emphasised the need for the Global North to invest in infrastructural development in Africa and not dwell on geopolitical considerations.

Professor Mala Daura, Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University, has said that the center for research and Qur’anic studies of the university would collaborate with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children’s Education to address issues around illiteracy, skills acquisition, and entrepreneurship, as well as prevention of youth poverty, delinquency, and destitution in the Northeast and Yobe State in particular.
The Vice Chancellor started this when the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, Dr. Mohammad Sani Idris, paid him a courtesy call at the council chambers of the university.
Professor Daura, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor central administration, Dr. Bukar Jamri, said the university is grateful that the commission found it worthy of a collaboration that would lead to the accomplishment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Education for Renewed Hope agenda.
He revealed that the collaboration with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children will help in the integration of Quranic and Tsangaya education.
“The university has other specialized centers that can strategically partner with the commission. They include the Center for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development and the Center for Research and Capacity Development on Humanitarian Studies,” he said.
Professor Daura further announced the appointment of the Executive Secretary as a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Research in Qur’anic Studies as well as honored him with the award of servant of Qur’anic education in Northeast Nigeria.
Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, Dr. Mohammad Sani Idris, said they were at the university to collaborate and to share the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on education for a renewed hope agenda.
He revealed that the commission is passionate about revitalizing Tsangaya education in the North, so they chose the center for research in Qur’anic studies of Yobe State University for collaboration.
The Executive Secretary also disclosed that the commission has chosen Yobe State University as one of the centers in Nigeria that will draw a roadmap for the 36 states in the federation in conjunction with the office of the National Security Adviser.
On the entourage of the Executive Secretary were the Chairman of the of the House Committee on Alternative Education, Arc Ibrahim Mustapha, and the former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Aisha Jibril Dukku, among others.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Acedemic Service), Dr. Mohammed Musa Lawan; the University Registrar, Dr. Kalli Yusuf Alkali Gazali; and the Director of the Center for Research in Qur’anic Studies, Dr. Adam Mohammed Mustapha.

20 University Students Abducted in Benue State While En Route to Medical Convention

In a troubling development, 20 students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos have been reportedly abducted while traveling to Enugu State.
Among the kidnapped students are eight members of the University of Maiduguri Medical Students Association (UMMESA) who were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FCMDS) Annual Convention.
The students began their journey on the morning of Wednesday, August 14, 2024, departing from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). They made an overnight stop at the University of Jos and continued their journey the next morning, August 15, 2024. The group, now joined by 10 students from the University of Jos, totaled 18 individuals. Their last known communication was at 3:24 PM on August 15, 2024, after which contact was lost.
The abduction reportedly occurred along the Otukpo (Benue) – Enugu road, a known route for travelers between the two states. The missing students include:

- Godwin Tumba,500-level MBBS student

This alarming situation has prompted immediate action from university authorities, law enforcement agencies, and concerned stakeholders. The students’ families and the wider academic community are anxiously awaiting further developments as efforts are being made to secure their safe return.
