PRESIDENT TINUBU AT 2024 MARITIME CONFERENCE: Africa Must Utilize Investment Opportunities In Nigeria’s Blue Economy

*Urges Navy to secure nation’s maritime future, seeks regional, global alliance

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has invited countries worldwide, especially those on the African continent, to take advantage of the investment opportunities that abound in Nigeria’s blue economy.

Accordingly, he implored the Nigerian Navy and its African partners as well as other stakeholders to focus on achieving a secure and prosperous maritime future that is beneficial to all, saying Nigeria cannot afford to fail in its responsibilities to Africa and the world at large.

The President made the call on Thursday when he declared open the 2024 International Maritime Conference held at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

President Tunubu who was represented at the conference by his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, observed that while a flourishing blue economy is the bedrock of every vibrant nation, the only way to attain such an economy is through “a progressive naval force.”

To this effect, he sought the commitment and devotion of officers of the Nigerian Navy and their international affiliates, describing them as “the lifeguards of our maritime environment.”

In his speech titled, “It’s Time to Secure Our Maritime Future,” which was read by VP Shettima, the President told the conferees: “This conference must inspire all stakeholders to see the big picture—that we cannot afford to fail in our responsibilities to the continent and, indeed, the entire world.

“Let us work towards a maritime future that is secure, prosperous, sustainable, and beneficial to all our people and the generations to come. I urge you all to feel at home and take advantage of the investment opportunities that abound in Nigeria’s blue economy.”

Noting that the conferees have a role to play in the bid to maximize the potential of the blue economy which he pegged per year at $1.5 trillion globally and $300 billion continentally, President Tinubu said, “The wealth of Africa can never be realized unless we prioritize the protection and development of our maritime environment.

“The blue economy is estimated to be worth more than US $1.5 trillion per year globally and is projected to increase to US $15.5 trillion by 2050. The “Africa Blue Economy Strategy” estimates that the blue economy currently generates nearly US $300 billion for the continent, creating 49 million jobs in the process. The Africa Blue Economy is projected to hit US $405 billion by 2030,” he further projected

He congratulated the Nigerian Navy on its 68th Anniversary, saying the nation remains immensely grateful for the service it has rendered in the past 68 years, “serving as a critical pillar of our security,” even as he applauded the marine forces for creating “a sense of balance and stability” in the country.

Specifically, the President commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, and the naval officers for “creating a safe and secure environment for economic growth and prosperity.

“There is no greater incentive to ensure that the infrastructure and technologies at the disposal of the Nigerian Navy are of the highest sophistication than the successes we have witnessed in our anti-crude oil theft crusade since I assumed office in 2023. This has contributed immensely to the higher oil production levels we have seen,” he added.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ogalla, said the outcome of the 2024 International Maritime Conference organised to commemorate the 68 anniversary of the Nigerian Navy will go a long way in enhancing its capabilities and strengthening existing collaborations in safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment.

He added that the forum will also offer a veritable platform to consolidate on the achievements of the combined maritime task force in support of the development of the blue economy on the continent, in the sub-region and the nation in particular.

On his part, the Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle, urged participants at the conference and partners of the Nigerian Navy to come up with innovative ways by which the navies in the sub-region can discharge their duties, and for Nigeria, in actualising the vision of President Tinubu for the safety and security of the nation’s maritime environment.

In the same vein, the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Mr Obafemi Hamzat, while acknowledging the significant strides of the Nigerian Navy, especially in safeguarding the country’s maritime domain, said the conference showcases the country’s rich maritime heritage and the efforts of the navies in the gulf of guinea.

Meanwhile, on arrival at the Naval Dockyard in Victoria Island, the Vice President commissioned three newly acquired Naval Ships – Nigerian Navy Ship OCHUZO, Nigerian Navy Ship CHALAWA, and Nigerian Navy Ship ZUR, as well as two helicopters – Nigerian Navy 412 and Nigerian Navy 414.

VP Shettima, who represented the President afterwards proceeded to declare open the Regional Maritime Exercise and also inspected the ongoing Seaward Defence Boats project. This was just as he took time to visit the exhibition stand mounted by the Nigeria Navy at the event.

Present were the chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Sen. Gbenga Daniel; chiefs of navies across Africa and beyond; heads of agencies in the maritime sector, former Chiefs of Naval Staff, senior military officers and representative of the Oba of Lagos, among others.

By: Michael Mike

A foremost youth leader, Dr. Raymond Edoh has called for the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi
following his recent appointment as the Chairperson World Customs Organisation, the highest decision-making body in global customs administration.

Edoh said the extension is necessary to reward him following an overwhelming glory he has brought to Nigeria with his appointment as the Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation.

He said: “This is a glory for Nigeria. It has never happened before. This has been a long-awaited dream for Africa, only to be surprised to have it bagged by the Nigerian Adewale Adeniyi, the CG Customs, Nigeria Customs Service.

“The challenge now is, if his tenure is not elongated, Nigeria as a country, as well as Africa, will lose this most influential position within the Customs macrocosm, and the negative implication would be enormous.

“Against this backdrop, I, Dr. Raymond Edoh, call on the federal government to kindly extend his tenure so that Nigeria as a country and Africa at large can enjoy the accrued benefits associated with the position therein”.

Edoh, while congratulating Adeniyi, described him as a hardworking leader and passionate administrator per excellence, assuring WCO that he would make the organisation proud in his tenure.

He said: “In a resounding affirmation of confidence, members of the WCO elected Adewale Adeniyi to lead the organisation, recognising his commitment to enhancing international customs cooperation, trade facilitation, and effective border management. This significant appointment not only underscores Adeniyi’s exemplary leadership within the Nigeria Customs Service but also highlights Nigeria’s increasing influence in global affairs, particularly in customs and trade.

“The WCO plays a pivotal role in establishing international customs standards and practices, fostering global trade and economic development. With Adeniyi at the helm, we are sure he would birth strategic advancements that align with the goals of the WCO, emphasising digital transformation in customs procedures, addressing illicit trade challenges, and promoting sustainable practices”.

Edoh further stated that: “Adewale Adeniyi’s election as the Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation is not merely a personal achievement but a victory for Nigeria and a monumental step towards strengthening our role on the global stage. His leadership will undoubtedly foster a collaborative approach to customs that will benefit not just Nigeria but all nations in the collective pursuit of economic prosperity and security.

“Adewale Adeniyi has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a profound understanding of customs issues over his years of service in the Nigeria Customs Service. He has initiated various reforms aimed at modernising customs operations, reducing trade barriers, and increasing revenue generation. His vision for a more efficient customs system aligns with the WCO’s objectives and mirrors the aspirations of the Nigerian youth, who seek a brighter future characterised by integrity, transparency, and innovation in all sectors.

He noted that: “The youth of Nigeria are especially proud of this achievement. It serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with determination and a clear vision, we can achieve positions of influence on the global platform. This is an inspiration to young leaders across Nigeria, proving that we are capable of driving change and impacting our communities on a larger scale.”

He said under Adeniyi’s leadership, there is an anticipated focus on technology and innovation as key drivers of customs reform. The integration of advanced technologies, such as blockchain and artificial intelligence, can streamline customs procedures, reducing delays and enhancing efficiency. This move towards digitalised customs processes will facilitate smoother international trade and strengthen the global supply chain.

He added that: “Adewale Adeniyi has always taken a stand against illicit trade practices. His leadership in the WCO presents an opportunity to tackle these critical issues with a comprehensive and collaborative approach, ensuring that customs administrations worldwide can effectively combat these challenges while promoting legitimate trade.

“The appointment of Adewale Adeniyi comes at an opportune moment when there is a growing need for enhanced cooperation among customs authorities globally. In light of recent global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, strong leadership in customs administration is essential to ensure that trade continues to flow unhindered. Adeniyi’s election is a strategic move towards stabilising the global trading environment and ensuring that customs systems are resilient against future challenges.

He however urged all stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and civil society, to rally behind Adewale Adeniyi’s leadership, stressing that: “It is imperative that we work together to achieve the WCO’s goals. “Collaboration will be key in ensuring that customs administrations operate effectively, facilitating trade while safeguarding our economies and societies.”

Troops neutralise 2 ISWAP insurgents planting IEDs on Borno highway

By: Zagazola Makama

The Nigerian Army troops of Sector 2, Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised two suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along a critical highway in Borno State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama on Monday that the ambush operation occurred along the strategic Trans-Timbuktu (TT) corridor, extending towards the Katarko–Goniri axis.

The sources said that the operation was conducted following credible intelligence on the movement of a terrorist IED-laying party along the route.

“During the encounter, troops engaged the terrorists in a brief but decisive firefight, killing two insurgents and forcing others to flee.

“Items recovered at the scene included two AK-47 rifles, several magazines, a motorcycle, and materials intended for constructing IEDs. Equipment designed to cut through tarred roads for the concealment of explosives was also found.

“The swift response by the troops not only thwarted a potential attack on military and civilian vehicles but also helped to secure a major supply route frequently targeted by terrorists,” a security source said.

The military has since intensified patrols and route clearance operations in the general area to prevent further attempts by the insurgents.
