Experts from Nigeria, 4 Other West African Countries Trained on Improvement Model of Agriculture

The hope of increased yield, proper food production coordination, and sharing of experience among regional actors in the field of Agriculture brightens as the AGRHYMET Regional Centre in collaboration with Partners and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has organized a 5- day workshop for experts from English-Speaking Countries on the SARRA-H&O Model, in Abuja, Nigeria Capital.
It should be noted that the AGRHYMET Regional Centre was established in 1974 as a specialized institute of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (abbreviated CILSS in French). This is a public inter-state institution based in Niamey, Niger with a mission to strengthen food security and increase agricultural production in member countries; it also contributes to improved natural resource management in the Sahel region, providing training and information to stakeholders and development partners in the field of agriculture.
Speaking at the workshop’s opening, the representative of AGRHYMET, Marshall Trawere, said the training was the fourth annual capacity-building programme strategically organized to improve Countries’ monitoring of the Agricultural campaign.
He said: “This workshop brings together 5 countries including Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone which are English–speaking countries.
“As you know, Sahelian Countries have been facing since 1973, an accelerated degradation of the environment and natural resources under the cumulative effects of recurrent drought desertification and human activities. This situation has led to a considerable reduction in productive potential, thus exposing the population to a precarious food situation.
“Thus, CILSS through the AGRHYMET Regional Center and with the support of technical and financial partners accompanies countries in the implementation and technical animation of the devices Early warning to provide regular and timely information essential for decision making in order to anticipate food and nutrition crisis. Among these arrangements for retaining the multidisciplinary working groups GTP), an Early warning system to identify areas and populations at risk of food and nutrition insecurity.
“As you know, national agricultural products are micro-economic, social and existential aggregates for countries and regions, for stability and food safety monitoring. This information allows our regional and national decision-makers to guide policies and strategies for self–sufficiency and food sovereignty. This is why it is very important for our national actors in charge of producing food and nutrition security information to have tools to enable them to achieve these objectives.
“This capacity-building training workshop on the SARRA-H&O model of crop yield monitoring and estimation is in line with our institution’s mission. It aims mainly at sharing experience with the national framework in the field of agricultural campaign monitoring by an agronomic model, hydrological monitoring, monitoring of water balance and crop yield forecast, and pastoral monitoring.
“This SARRA-H&O model which is a fairly dynamic agronomic model is currently at the forefront of production estimation models. It has been developed jointly by CIRAD and AGRHYMET Regional Centre for several decades. The model is being developed to take into account other crops that are important for the region, such as rain-fed rice, cowpea, groundnut, and tubers”, he said.
The AGRHYMET representative thanked the partners such as CILSS (NPFS), USAID through PRASSAR for their support of the organization.
Speaking also, Mr. Amu Anthony from the Department of National Programme on Food Security highlighted various efforts and strategic initiatives of the present administration in Nigeria aimed at ensuring national food security and called for concerted efforts in the use of modern tools and synergy among stakeholders.
In the same vein, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Prof. Charles Anosike who was represented by Dr. James Adamu, emphasized the importance of the workshop and urged participants to take advantage of the skill that will be provided at the training to improve food security in their various Countries and Agencies.
Cross section of participants at the workshop commended AGRYMET and its partners for the training and promised to make judicious use of the knowledge that will be gained to create the desired positive shit in food production in their countries.

Unijos alumni condenms killing of student

The University of Jos Alumni Association has condemned the killing of a student allegedly by fellow students, describing the act as “senseless and reprehensible.”
In an official statement signed by its Global President, Gad Peter, and released on Monday, the association said it received the news “with profound shock and deep sadness.”
“We condemn this senseless and reprehensible act in the strongest possible terms,” the statement read. “Violence has no place within our University community and stands in direct contradiction to the values of excellence, character, mutual respect, and humanity upon which the University of Jos was founded.
The Alumni body stated unequivocally that it does not condone violence in any form. “No grievance, disagreement, or circumstance can ever justify the taking of a human life,” it said.
The association called on relevant authorities to carry out a “thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation” into the incident and to ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted according to the law.
“Accountability is essential not only to honour the memory of the deceased but also to preserve the safety and integrity of our university community,” the statement added.
Addressing members as “Great Josites,” the Alumni President said the association stands united in rejecting violence and in promoting “a culture of peace, responsibility, and respect for the sanctity of human life.”
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends, colleagues, and the entire University community,” Peter said.
“May the soul of the deceased rest in peace, and may justice prevail.”
Security agencies on the Plateau had confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the incident as at the time of writing this report.

Troops rescue woman, child who lost their way in Adamawa

Troops of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, have rescued a woman and her daughter who became stranded after losing their way in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the woman, identified as Mrs. Aisha Hamidu, 22, and her daughter were found by troops of the 232 Battalion (Tactical) during a perimeter patrol along the Garaha–Dabna road at about 8:15 p.m. on July 31.
The sources said the patrol was conducted as part of follow-up activities after a military fire mission carried out on July 30 in the area.
Preliminary questioning revealed that Mrs. Hamidu had lost her way and had been wandering with her daughter before they were spotted by the troops.
According to the sources, local residents later identified the woman, after which she and her daughter were safely reunited with their family in Gombi.
Military authorities said the rescue highlights the continued commitment of Operation HADIN KAI troops to protecting civilians and providing humanitarian assistance alongside ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the North-East.

DSS, Community Vigilantes Neutralize Bandit Kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki, 60 Others in Katsina
An intelligence-led operation by the Department of State Services (DSS), has resulted in the death of over 60 suspected bandits in Bakori Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
Security sources disclosed that one notorious bandit kingpin, Idi Abasu Aiki, believed to be responsible for several cases of attacks by bandits in the Northwest states of Katsina and Zamfara States, was among those neutralized during the operation.
According to the sources, the operation was backed by members of the Katsina State Community vigilantes and specially-trained hunters, of which four of them were killed by the bandits.
Said one of the sources, “Over 200 armed bandits led by kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki stormed Guga village in Bakori LGA of Katsina State.
“Assisted by several bandits from the Ado Aleru band in Zamfara State, the bandits were out to attack communities they believed had been supporting Community Watch Corps protecting the surrounding villages,” offered the source.
Early last month, the bandits suffered heavy casualties at Dawan Laila village, Bakori LGA, in the hands of the hunters.. The bandits, therefore, were out on a reprisal mission to dislodge the frontline community’s defence group, and thereafter proceed to inflict mass casualties on surrounding villages, the source added.
He continued, “Unknown to the bandits, the DSS had water-tight intelligence plans. The over 200 armed bandits literally walked into a trap. Over 60 of them, including Idi Abasu Aiki and 14 of their top commanders, didn’t come out of that trap alive.”
Another security source disclosed that the DSS and their support security groups undertook massive clearance operation to recover weapons and other items of concern abandoned by the bandits.
