Zulum pledges support for Leather and Hides Industry to boost Borno economy

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the leather and hides industry in the state to drive economic growth.
Zulum made the commitment on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, at the Government House, Maiduguri.
Governor Zulum emphasized the sector’s critical role in not only advancing Borno State’s economy but also contributing to the nation’s economic development.
He highlighted the state’s efforts to revive the Neitel Shoes Company which had been dormant for over two decades, noting that with continued political will, significant transformation in the leather industry is achievable.
He hailed the upgrade of the Maiduguri Extension Centre of NILEST to a Regional Centre, a move that will enhance coordination of leather-related activities across six states in the region.
He expressed strong support for the sector stating, “We will give you the desired support to promote the sector. With the degree of seriousness, we can achieve success. However, where there is corruption, progress will be difficult. Let me assure you that the government of Borno State will work with you and your team for the growth and development of the leather industry.”
Governor Zulum further directed the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tarpaya Asarya, to collaborate with NILEST to create job opportunities for unemployed youths, promote capacity building, and facilitate other benefits linked to the sector’s growth.
The governor also ordered the immediate dispatch of 60 Borno State indigenes to NILEST in Zaria for training in leather technology, footwear design, and innovation.
“As the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Leather Policy, we aim to thoroughly study the policy document to explore more opportunities for growth and partnerships,” Governor Zulum added.
In response to recent flood damage, the governor also instructed the reconstruction of the Centre’s damaged perimeter fence and the allocation of two housing units for staff members of the institute.
Director General and CEO of NILEST, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, announced that the Maiduguri Extension Centre has officially been upgraded to the Northeast Regional Centre, with Borno State indigene, Dr. Usman Ali Busuguma, appointed as the new Northeast Regional Manager.
He expressed his appreciation to the governor for his keen interest in ensuring productivity in leather and leather products.

Bandits kill hunters’ leader in Benue

Suspected bandits have killed the leader of hunters in Tine Nune community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue.
Zagazola learnt that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, happened while the victim, identified as Hilenen Terzungwe, was on patrol with five others along Biriji village.
Terzungwe sustained severe machete cuts during the attack and was rushed to a medical facility in Tine Nune, where he later died while receiving treatment.
His remains have since been deposited at the General Hospital, Zaki-Biam.
Security has been strengthened in the area to forestall further attacks, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Security forces move to avert reprisal after killing of herdsman in Benue

Security forces have intensified patrols and peace-building efforts in Anyiatse village, Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue, following the killing of a Fulani herdsman by suspected youths of the community.
Zagazola learnt that the incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, has heightened fears of a reprisal attack by Fulani groups in the area.
Sources said the herdsman was attacked and killed in the bush, sparking tension among residents and neighbouring communities.
In response, security personnel were deployed to the area to forestall further violence, while traditional rulers and stakeholders have been engaged in dialogue to restore calm.
The measures, according to local authorities, are aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order as investigations into the killing continue

Gunmen kill five, burn houses in Mangu LGA, Plateau

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias have killed five persons and burnt 10 houses in Tim village, Chakfem District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau.
Zagazola Makama report that the attack, which occurred on Tuesday at about 4 p.m., saw the assailants storm the community, shooting sporadically before setting thatched houses ablaze.
Local sources said the victims’ corpses had been evacuated for burial, while the injured were receiving treatment in nearby health facilities.
Community members disclosed that the assault might have been carried out in retaliation for cattle allegedly rustled in the area.
Troops of the Special Task Force (STF) were deployed to the scene and engaged the attackers in a firefight, forcing them to flee, with some believed to have sustained bullet wounds.
Residents said calm had returned to the area on Wednesday, though the village remains tense as investigations continue and efforts are being made to apprehend those behind the attack.
