Brief on the late Emir of Gudi

The late Emir of Gudi, Alhaji Isa Bunuwo Ibn Madubu Khaji, was born in Gadaka town in 1950, a time that is considered in history with the arrival of the first batch of Christian missionaries to Gadaka town, the Fika Native Authority, and later the Fika Emirate.

Alhaji Isa Bunuwo started his western education at Gadaka Central Primary School, and on graduation he gained employment under the Fika native authority in 1969 as an instructor in the Agricultural Department. He then proceeded on course to the College of Agriculture in Maiduguri, the northeastern state, in 1972.

On graduation, the late Isa Bunuwo was transferred from the agriculture department to the treasury, and after settling, he secured admission into the Staff Training Center Potiskum, now the College of Business and Administrative Studies (CABS), where he graduated with a diploma certificate in accountancy in 1983.

Alhaji Isa Bunuwo Ibn Madubu Khaji was later seconded to the Federal Girls College Potiskum as an accountant and later redeployed to the treasury department as a revenue officer, then cashier, where he served for many years. Following the aspirations and desire of the people of Gudi to have a district, he was appointed as the District Head of the newly created district of Ngeji with headquarters at Gadaka in 1991.

The spirit and desire of the Ngamo people to have a kingdom continued, and this time around it was for the upgrading of the district to an emirate, where Alhaji Isa Bunuwo Ibn Madubu Khaji became the Mai Gudi with third-class grade status confirmed by Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim FNIQS in 1993.

The hope of the Ngamo was, however, dashed following the change of government from civil to military in 1993 when the military administrator of Yobe state, then COMPOL Dabo Aliyu, reversed the appointment and dissolved the emirate.

Alhaji Isa Bunuwo Ibn Madubu Khaji had to adjust to his former position as district head of Ngeji and acted for nearly 6 years. When Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim was re-elected for the second time, his appointment was resuscitated, and the wishes, yearning, and aspirations of the Ngamo and indeed all ethnic groups across Yobe state for getting their traditional chiefdoms were renewed.

The Emir of Gudi and all other emirs received various upgrades from their grades to a higher one, an exercise that was conducted in several phases, which brought all the emirs from their previous classes to first-class status, and the Emir of Gudi was among the beneficiaries in 2007.

The late Emir of Gudi enjoys farming, and he has received awards from the Farmers Institute of Nigeria, has travelled widely within and outside Nigeria, and is happily married to four wives.

Governor Zulum flags off fertilizer sales, warns against diversion.

Governor of Borno State Babagana Zulum has warned that anyone who diverts fertilizer will be prosecuted no matter how highly placed.

In his speech while flagging off the sales of fertilizer in the state recently, the governor asserted that no resident would be spared, “no matter how highly placed,” the repercussions of flouting his directive.

Zulum noted that he is aware of the “risks” associated with the diversion of the commodity, which is why he is emphasizing that any form of diversion of fertilizer in the state by anyone high or low in the state will be punished.

He called on the intelligence agencies to wake up to their responsibilities by ensuring that all culprits are arrested and prosecuted for daring to divert the commodity within or outside the state.

“Culprits shall be dealt with, specifically those who are not farmers but intend to use proxies to get the commodities for any form of usage.

“I hereby call on traditional and community leaders to be very vigilant during this distribution of the fertilizers, which should be given to only registered members. All farmers must register to partake in the sales, which will be done at 50 percent of the price.

“Let me add that this government will stop at nothing to empower farmers in the state to achieve all their potential, which is why it is only fertilizers that will be sold at 50 percent prices. Other implements would be given free to them.” Said Zulum.

It is a known fact that insurgents are in desperate need of fertilizers, especially urea, which is used to assist them in the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used to cause havoc to both civilians and the military in the 15-year-old conflict that has plagued the Northeastern region of Nigeria.

Tackling restrictions over farmlands

The governor expressed dissatisfaction over the back-and-forth some residents have been having with security agencies over their ancestral farmlands, in which they have been restricted from farming.

“I want you to report anybody who stops you as farmers from farming anywhere in the state. Such decisions can only be given by the state security council and nobody else. Nobody can take such a decision without consulting us at the security council.

“As long as you have clearance from us, you are free to farm anywhere. Ensure you have the clearance, which I can assure you nobody can deny you as long as we have given you clearance,” said Zulum.

The governor maintained that his government was on course in going into private partnership with a private investor to maintain the continuous functionality of the state fertilizer plant, which has remained comatose for some time now.

Making his remarks as the Chair of the agricultural transformation committee, the secretary to the state government, Tijani Bukar, assured that they will work with the World Food Programme to ensure that the sector is moved from where it is now to where it should be in the nearest future.

He hinted that the governor is worried about the recovery by returnee farmers who have lost virtually everything to the tragedy of the 15-year insurgency, which is why he is doing all he can to make them achieve the concept of recovery, which should make them happy.

Counting the blessings of the recovery program, the SSG said that Monguno was a typical example of a council area that superseded its expectations beyond all imagination.

“We have been achieving results so far. Monguno alone generated over N50 billion from beans alone in 2024. And this occurs because of the complementarity from the government.

“The concepts of resilience, recovery, and seed capital are key factors that the government will continue with to ensure that all registered farmers will prosper in the business of food security.

“Let me assure you that nobody should express any fear of any source because as long as you are a conscious farmer, you will get what is due to you as support for being a farmer.” Said Alhaji Bukar.

Commissioner of Agriculture Bawa Musari stated that in spite of all the challenges farmers have experienced in the state, he has not lost hope for their future but believes in the greenery of the entire state before the end of the farming season.

He called on Governor Professor Zulum to do all he can in his power to revitalize the fertilizer plant, which is a vital asset in the green revolution of the entire state.

Zulum to Resettle 5,000 Displaced Persons in Bama

… Borno State Governor Announces Resettlement of 5,000 Displaced Persons Ahead of Farming Season

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has revealed plans to resettle 5,000 displaced persons from five communities before the end of the rainy season to enable them to engage in farming activities.

The communities include Goniri, Bula Kuriye, Mayanti, Abbaram, and Darajamal.

Governor Zulum disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Bama, Dr. Umar ibn Kyari Umar ElKanemi, at his palace in Bama on Friday.

The governor stated that the construction of 1,000 transitional shelters has commenced in each of the communities, with Darajamal’s already completed.

“We are committed to resettling all displaced persons living in IDP camps back to their communities. Construction of transitional shelters has started in Mayanti, Goniri, Bula Kuriye, and Abbaram, while that of Darajamal has been completed. I have also directed the digging of trenches to fortify the communities,” Governor Zulum said.

He emphasised the importance of farming, stating, “Our target is to ensure that they participate in this cropping season. Farming is our greatest treasure. I will interface with the Commanding Officer and leaders of Civilian JTF to strategise on how best to further protect these areas.”

Additionally, Governor Zulum informed the Shehu of Bama that security measures have been strengthened in Nguro Soye, a community on the outskirts of Bama town, to ensure safe farming activities.

“While returning from Gwoza, I stopped at the military formation in Banki Junction, where we discussed intensifying security in Nguro Soye and surrounding areas. I have provided the necessary logistics to the military and Civilian JTF and pledged six months’ allowances for volunteers patrolling the area,” he announced.

In response, the Shehu of Bama commended Governor Zulum for his purposeful leadership and commitment to the security and welfare of the people.

“I will like to appreciate the governor for resettling the people of Darajamal and for ongoing efforts to return more displaced persons to their homes. We are grateful, Your Excellency,” the Shehu said.

He also appealed for additional support to members of the Civilian JTF to safeguard farmers and farmlands during the rainy season.
