President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s statement while celebrating Vice President Kashim Shettima’s 59th birthday sends a powerful and unequivocal message regarding the strength and harmony of their political partnership. In an era where political alliances are frequently scrutinized and often questioned, Tinubu’s warm and public acknowledgment of Shettima underscores a unified front within Nigeria’s executive leadership. This gesture not only reflects mutual respect but also serves to reassure both supporters and skeptics about the administration’s stability and collaborative governance approach.

This year’s birthday for the VP, Kashim, and those who stood with this administration points to the significance that lies in this symbolic affirmation of the working relationship between the President and his deputy. Despite circulating doubts about potential fissures, Tinubu’s heartfelt message dispels such skepticism by highlighting personal admiration alongside political solidarity. The warmth expressed in his congratulatory message is indicative of genuine camaraderie rather than mere formal protocol. Such interpersonal dynamics are crucial in fostering effective governance, as they promote cohesion that transcends mere transactional alliances.

The celebration of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s 59th birthday by President Bola Tinubu presents a pivotal moment to reflect on the vice president’s substantial contributions to Nigeria’s political and social landscape. As a prominent figure in Nigerian governance, Shettima’s tenure has been marked by notable achievements that underscore his commitment to national development and stability. His leadership style, characterized by pragmatic decision-making and inclusive governance, has earned him recognition beyond mere ceremonial accolades. Acknowledging these accomplishments during such celebrations not only honors his individual dedication but also highlights the broader significance of effective leadership in Nigeria’s complex political environment.

Leadership as demonstrated by VP Kashim Shettima in Nigeria demands resilience and vision due to the country’s diverse ethnic composition and multifaceted socio-economic challenges. Thus, commemorating Shettima at this juncture serves as an affirmation of the critical role that principled leaders play in steering Nigeria toward sustainable progress. Such public endorsements from the president reinforce unity within the executive branch and inspire confidence among citizens regarding their government’s direction, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.

For me, September 2, 2025, stands as a significant date to celebrate my boss, brother, friend, and leader, not only for marking the passage of time but also for honoring the multifaceted relationship shared with the VP. I, therefore, celebrate him each passing year. However, reading the President’s statement on the Vice President lit up the day as my brother and principal, Hon. Abdul Kareem Names, called my attention to the President’s statement. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the vice president as “my brother, partner, and vice president.” Beyond commemorating age, the president’s statement symbolizes recognition of character development and sustained commitment to shared goals. The intertwining roles of brotherhood and partnership further deepen this celebration by highlighting the complex dynamics that govern familial bonds alongside professional collaboration. Brotherhood traditionally embodies loyalty, trust, and emotional support; when coupled with partnership—particularly in a leadership context—it demands additional layers of communication, mutual respect, and strategic alignment. This is what the president is saying.

According to Mr. President, “Since we embarked on this journey, united by the shared vision of building a more prosperous nation, your courage, sense of duty, tenacity, determination, and belief in Nigeria’s greatness have remained unshaken. This collective spirit is indispensable for overcoming the multifaceted challenges that confront Nigeria today.” Indeed, President Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated that transformative progress is achievable when citizens remain steadfast in their commitment to national development. The implementation of critical economic reforms—such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows—has stabilized Nigeria’s economy and set a foundation for sustainable growth. These policies exemplify how courage and determination between the two leaders translate into tangible improvements that benefit all Nigerians.

VP Kashim Shettima’s leadership as both Governor of Borno State for eight years and later as Senator representing Borno Central in the National Assembly exemplifies a profound commitment to leadership defined by service rather than privilege. Throughout these roles, the VP has consistently demonstrated that true leadership involves addressing the needs of the people despite overwhelming challenges, such as security threats and socio-economic difficulties. Leadership in this context transcended mere political authority; it embodied a dedication to improving lives and fostering resilience within one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions.

During his tenure as governor, significant strides were made in infrastructure development, education, and healthcare—sectors critical to Borno’s recovery and growth. The administration prioritized rebuilding communities affected by insurgency while ensuring that government resources were allocated transparently and effectively. This approach reflected an understanding that governance is fundamentally about serving citizens’ interests rather than accruing personal power or privilege.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today captured this while reflecting on this all-important day in the life of the Vice President. Indeed, Nigeria’s journey toward democratic governance has been marked by both significant achievements and persistent challenges. The nation’s commitment to democracy, underscored by the peaceful transitions of power since 1999, reflects a deep-rooted passion for political inclusivity and citizen participation. This dedication to democratic ideals has fostered a political environment where accountability, transparency, and public engagement are increasingly valued as essential components of national progress. Despite critiques regarding the direct correlation between democracy and economic development in Nigeria, it is undeniable that democratic governance provides a framework within which sustainable growth can be pursued.

The President said regarding VP Shettima. “I deeply appreciate your vibrancy, loyalty, partnership, and support as my deputy. These qualities have not only strengthened our working relationship but have also exemplified the kind of leadership that Nigeria urgently needs. Choosing you as a partner was a deliberate decision grounded in your competence and unwavering dedication to service. Loyalty is often undervalued in political partnerships; however, it remains a cornerstone of trust and accountability. Your steadfast loyalty has been instrumental in navigating the intricacies of public administration. It ensures that decisions are made transparently and with mutual respect, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of our office.

“Every day, as Vice President, you have consistently justified the choice made in selecting you as my deputy by strengthening our collective work, introducing fresh perspectives, and steadfastly upholding our commitment to Nigerians. Leadership at such a high level demands not only strategic acumen but also unwavering dedication to public service. Your contributions have been instrumental in driving the administration’s agenda forward, reflecting a deep understanding of the challenges facing our nation and a resolute determination to address them effectively. This consistent performance serves as a testament to your capability and validates the decision made in your favor.

“One of the most significant ways you have justified this choice is through your ability to bring innovative ideas and fresh perspectives into governance. In an ever-evolving political landscape, adaptability and forward-thinking are essential qualities for effective leadership. By approaching problems with creativity and openness, you have enriched policy discussions and broadened the scope of solutions considered by our administration.”

The Renewed Hope Agenda represents a transformative vision for Nigeria’s future, emphasizing the critical role of partnership in achieving sustainable development and economic revival. This agenda, championed by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, strategically integrates global partnerships, domestic reforms, and diaspora engagement to reposition Nigeria as a competitive player on the world stage. The collaborative efforts across the Atlantic and at home highlight how interconnected actions can drive national progress effectively. As Nigeria stands on the precipice of transformative growth, the Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima presents a compelling vision for the nation’s future. The agenda’s emphasis on unlocking new trade corridors and delivering essential infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and jobs is not merely aspirational but a strategic pathway to tangible socioeconomic progress.

One of the most significant aspects of the Renewed Hope Agenda is its focus on infrastructure development, which directly addresses long-standing challenges in the education, healthcare, and employment sectors. By constructing more schools and hospitals, Nigeria will not only improve access to quality education and healthcare services but also stimulate economic activity through job creation. Indeed, that is why the President took an inward view of the relationship and partnership he built with his deputy when he said, “Our relationship transcends mere official duties, evolving into a profound connection that bridges diverse regions and traditions within Nigeria.” This relationship exemplifies the potential of unity amidst diversity, highlighting how shared purpose and commitment to service can foster national cohesion.

At its core, this relationship embodies more than transactional interactions; it represents an enduring alliance rooted in trust and shared vision. By prioritizing Nigeria’s interests above individual or sectional gains, it sets a standard for public service that is both aspirational and attainable. This dynamic illustrates how leaders can transcend parochial considerations to embrace broader national imperatives. The President puts it. “On the occasion of your 59th birthday, it is both fitting and meaningful to extend wishes of renewed vitality, wisdom, and continued impactful contributions.”

As individuals approach significant milestones in life, such as the threshold of sixty years, reflection on past achievements and anticipation of future endeavors become paramount. The age of 59 represents not only a culmination of decades filled with experience but also an opportunity for rejuvenation and renewed purpose. Renewed vitality at the age of 59 serves as a crucial foundation for sustaining an active lifestyle that supports both physical health and mental well-being. The phrase “Happy Birthday, Kashim, and Many Happy Returns!” is a culturally rich and historically significant greeting that conveys more than just felicitations on the anniversary of one’s birth. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is standing strong by Vice President Kashim Shettima, and we all attest to this on this occasion. Mr. Vice President, we wish you “Many Happy Returns.”

The sudden departure of Ya Stanley Mshelia has left a profound void within both my personal life and the media community at large. His exit was not merely the loss of a beloved elder in the profession but also the loss of an influential figure whose presence unified many within the media fraternity. Late Haruna Dauda Biu: My brother, my friend in the perilous realm of frontline journalism

By: Dr. James Bwala

Late Haruka Dauda Biu was more than a Voice of America (VOA) correspondent reporting from Borno; he was my friend, brother, and comrade in the perilous realm of frontline journalism. His dedication to truthful reporting amidst the insurgency in northeastern Nigeria exemplified courage and resilience. Together, we navigated the complexities of conflict zones, often risking our lives to bring critical information to global audiences. Haruna’s unwavering commitment not only highlighted the human toll of violence but also underscored the essential role journalists play in conflict resolution and accountability.

Our shared experiences forged a bond rooted in mutual respect and professional solidarity. In an environment where misinformation is rampant and danger constant, Haruna’s integrity set a standard for ethical journalism. His legacy endures as a testament to the sacrifices made by correspondents who confront adversity daily to uphold democratic ideals through informed reportage. The loss of Haruna Dauda Biu is deeply felt among colleagues who continue to draw inspiration from his exemplary service on the front lines of journalism.

Haruna Dauda Biu was a man distinguished by his simple character and unwavering commitment to peace, qualities that defined his leadership of the Correspondent Chapel. His humility and approachable demeanor fostered an environment of trust and cooperation among his followers, embodying the virtues often idealized in effective community leaders. Unlike complex or authoritarian figures, Haruna’s simplicity allowed him to connect deeply with individuals from diverse backgrounds, facilitating dialogue and understanding within the chapel.

As a leader dedicated to peace, Haruna Dauda Biu emphasized reconciliation and harmony amid challenges faced by religious communities in Northern Nigeria. Although broader studies highlight persistent violence affecting churches in the region. Haruna’s leadership stood out for prioritizing peaceful coexistence. His approach aligns with recognized strategies where local leaders play crucial roles in conflict prevention by fostering communal values despite limited formal authority.

Haruna Dauda Biu exemplified how modesty combined with principled leadership can cultivate peace within religious settings. While larger socio-political forces shaped many challenges confronting Nigerian churches, his personal dedication to simplicity and harmony provided a stabilizing influence within the Correspondent Chapel community.

The passing of Haruna Dauda Biu marks the loss of a remarkable individual whose smile and spirit will be profoundly missed. His battle, marked by resilience and courage, exemplified a commendable fight against adversity. While his departure is deeply felt, it is comforting to acknowledge that “God loves him more,” suggesting a spiritual solace amid grief. Such expressions are vital in honoring the memory of those who have left an indelible impact on their communities.

In reflecting upon this tribute, it is imperative to recognize the unwavering support extended by key figures during Haruna Dauda Biu’s final days. The Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Chief Medical Director of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, who played significant roles in providing care and encouragement while he was hospitalized. Their contributions underscore the importance of leadership and solidarity in times of personal hardship. Though external references offer limited insight into these individuals’ involvement, acknowledging their support enriches our understanding of communal bonds in moments of loss.

Ultimately, this tribute not only commemorates Haruna Dauda Biu’s life but also highlights the collective efforts that surrounded him until his last day. It serves as a testament to human compassion and shared responsibility in confronting mortality with dignity and grace. Such narratives are essential in fostering empathy and appreciation for those who stand beside us during life’s most challenging moments.
