EFCC releases Obiano after 6 days in custody, seizes passport

The former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after spending one week in custody.

Obiano was arrested hours after handing over to his successor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on his way to the United States.

On Wednesday, the anti-graft agency granted the former governor administrative bail, while waiting for him to fulfil his bail conditions.

As part of his bail condition, the EFCC also withheld his passport.

The report earlier gathered that Obiano was in custody over the alleged misappropriation of N42 billion belonging to the Anambra State.

“Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including, N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash. Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state,” Head of Media and Publicity of the EFFC, Wilson Uwujaren, said after the former governor’s arrest.

While in custody, a leaked video of Obiano in shorts drinking water while seated made rounds on the Internet which received immediate condemnation from different quarters.

The EFCC said it had identified its operative who made and published the video and sanctioned them.

Police in Zamfara State have rescued two victims abducted by suspected bandits during a midnight attack on a residence in Gusau Local Government Area.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 1:20 a.m. on Sunday at Igala Quarters, Damba area of Gusau, when a group of armed men stormed the house of one Nasiru Kurya and fired sporadically before abducting his wife, Surayya Nasiru, 30, and two other persons.

“On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) mobilised his men to the scene and confirmed the incident. A search operation was immediately launched across the area,” the source said.

He explained that during the combing of the vicinity and adjoining routes, the police rescued two of the abducted victims identified as Nura Sani, 23, and Abdulgafar Hassan Buba, 23, unhurt.

The source added that the rescued victims were taken to the Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital, Gusau, for medical checks and further care.

According to him, efforts are in top gear to rescue the remaining abducted victim from the hands of the bandits and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations.

Missing inspector, four villagers escape from abductors in Zamfara

A police inspector earlier reported missing, Aliyu Ibrahim, and four villagers have escaped from their abductors in Zamfara State, the police have confirmed.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the victims fled from the kidnappers’ den and made their way to safety, with the inspector currently receiving medical attention at a military facility in Farin Kasa village.

The source said that following the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state directed that an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) be dispatched from Gusau to convey the inspector to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) for further treatment.

“Inspector Aliyu Ibrahim and four villagers have successfully escaped from captivity. The inspector is stable and undergoing medical care, while arrangements are being made to move him to FMC for comprehensive treatment,” the source said.

He added that security agencies had intensified efforts to locate and rescue the remaining abducted villagers and to recover the firearms carted away by the kidnappers during the incident.

According to the source, operations to track the criminals are ongoing across the affected areas as part of broader measures to curb banditry and kidnapping in Zamfara State.

Gunmen kill 50-year-old man in Benue village as troops launch manhunt

Gunmen have killed a 50-year-old man, Alhaji Sadauna, during an early morning attack on Gbajimba village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the assailants stormed the community at about 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and attacked the victim before fleeing the area.

“Troops of Sector 1, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), stationed in Gbajimba, immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving the report,” the source said.

According to sources, the soldiers arrived to find that Alhaji Sadauna, aged 50, had already been killed by the attackers.

“The troops swiftly pursued the fleeing gunmen along their suspected escape routes, but no contact was made,” the source added.

The sources said the soldiers secured the area and later evacuated the body of the deceased before handing it over to personnel of the Nigeria Police at the Gbajimba Police Division.

The source said efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
