80-year-old ex-convict arrested as NDLEA uncovers illicit drugs in full body mannequins

An unrepentant 80-year-old grandpa Jeremiah Nkanta has again been nabbed for another drug crime by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) barely

three years after he was arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to two years imprisonment for dealing in illicit drugs,

A statement by the spokesman of the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi on Sunday said Nkanta, notorious for illicit drug business was first arrested by NDLEA on 14th December 2022, prosecuted and sentenced to two years in jail by a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Babafemi said Nkanta not ready to let go the old habit, returned to the illicit drug trade and following credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives on Saturday tracked the Octogenarian ex-convict to his Mmanta – Abak village, Abak local government area of Akwa Ibom state, where he was arrested with 5.7 kilogrammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis in his residence.

The spokesman said in another successful interdiction operation in Akwa Ibom state, NDLEA operatives on patrol along Oron-Ibaka road in Oron local government area last Friday intercepted a 37-year-old businessman Ani Onyebuchi while travelling with full body mannequins for his clothing business in Cameroun, adding that a search of the mannequins revealed that they were stuffed with pills of tramadol weighing 5.3 kilogrammes.

He said the suspect claimed he resides in Cameroon and was reportedly returning to his base after the Christmas and New Year holidays when he was apprehended. It was revealed that he bought the drugs in Onitsha, Anambra state and was trafficking them to Cameroon to sell, using two mannequins to conceal the opioids.

In Oyo state, raids across different locations led to the seizure of dangerous illicit drugs and arrest of notorious dealers, including 45-year-old Remi Bamidele (Alias ‘Aluko the Mafia’) at Sasa, Ibadan, where a total of 10.696 kilogrammes of Colorado, Scottish Loud, Ghana Loud, Canadian Loud and skunk, all strains of cannabis.

Babafemi said at the time of his arrest last Thursday, two vehicles: Toyota Venza and Toyota Yaris marked HG 06 LYD were recovered from him.

At Adegbayi area of the state capital Ibadan, NDLEA officers lastbFriday arrested Adeola Toheeb, 27, with various quantities of Colorado, Ghana Loud and skunk while Habeeb Ali, 29, was nabbed at Ring road, Ibadan with 1.264 kilogrammes Colorado, Scottish Loud and skunk. Not less than

₦1,307,100 cash exhibit was also recovered from him at the point of his arrest on Saturday.

A dispatch rider Osagbovo Edigin, 30, and two other suspects: Ebimi Labo, 28, and Akhimie Success, 25, were last Friday arrested at Ihama/Airport road GRA Benin City, Edo state in connection with the seizure of 118 grammes of Canadian Loud and a wrap of Colorado.

While Jimoh Agbonmhegbe, 49, was arrested at Irrua with 17.552 kilogrammes Colorado, Loud and skunk, another suspect Evelyn Okoyomon, 38, was nabbed at Ubiaja with 930 grammes of skunk last Wednesday.

Babafemi said in Niger state, no fewer than 4,000 pills of tramadol 225mg were recovered from a suspect Nazifi Umar, 22, at Dakwa town, Tafa local government area, while another suspect Yusuf Usman, 41, was nabbed with 100 blocks of skunk weighing 47 kilogrammes at Lankaviri, Yorro local government area, Taraba state last Wednesday.

Not less than 30,950 capsules of tramadol, he said were recovered from the home of a suspect Ugwoke Chibueze, 40, in Bachure area of Yola South local government area, Adamawa state following his arrest at the Lamido Aliyu Mustapha International Airport Yola last Tuesday.

Babafemi said with the same vigour, commands and formations of the agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week.

Meanwhile, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), while commending the officers and men of Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Taraba, Edo, Oyo, and Niger commands of the agency for the arrests and seizures, stated that their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country especially their balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts are well appreciated.

Armed men abduct seven Fulani herdsmen in Bauchi, two rescued

Seven nomadic pastoralists were abducted by armed men at their camp near Garin Jaji Village, Akko Local Government Area, Bauchi State, in the early hours of Saturday.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred at about 1:00 a.m., when assailants carrying rifles raided the camp located between Garin Jaji and neighboring border communities. The victims, all male, were identified as Sabon Anaruwa, Idrisa Anaruwa, Lauwali Baba, Dahiru Musa, Danhajiya Lawal, Ibrahim Lawan, and Chali Dan Hajiya.

A joint rescue team led by the Nigeria army with collaboration with the police, hunters and vigilante mobilized to the area. Two of the victims, Chali Dan Hajiya and Idrisa Anaruwa, were rescued in the bush bordering Garin Jaji and the Yankari Game Reserve.

The remaining five abductees were reportedly taken across to the Futuk area of Yankari Game Reserve. Authorities in Bauchi have been alerted for immediate follow-up and rescue operations.

EXCLUSIVE: expanding JAS/ANSARU–JNIM violence signals growing jihadist threat in Niger–Kwara corridor

Recent attacks by terrorists linked to Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), Ansaru splinter factions and the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) have brought into sharp focus a troubling expansion of jihadist violence into Nigeria’s North-Central zone, with Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State emerging as a new flashpoint.

On Jan. 9, 2026, terrorists operating along the Borgu axis attacked Damala village, a Kambari farming settlement in Borgu LGA. The assailants killed four residents, looted foodstuffs and livestock, and subsequently withdrew towards the Kainji National Park.

Zagazola Makama report that the attack followed a similar modus operandi to the Jan. 3, 2026 massacre at Kasuwan Daji, where villagers were killed and abducted in a coordinated night raid.

Deep findings indicated that Borgu and neighbouring Agwara LGAs have increasingly become areas of operation for a Saddiku-led Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) faction working in collaboration with JNIM fighters infiltrating from the Sahel.

The terrorists are believed to be exploiting the Liptako–Gourma tri-border forest corridor, which stretches across parts of Mali, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso, before filtering through Benin Republic into the Kainji National Park ecosystem.

Zagazola noted that the vast forested terrain of the park, combined with weak surveillance, has made it an attractive rear base for terrorist regrouping, logistics and cross-border movement. Borgu has been under sustained pressure, with attacks occurring at regular intervals.

On Nov. 21, 2025, gunmen abducted students of St. Mary Catholic School, Papiri, in Borgu LGA. The students were later released in batches on Dec. 8 and Dec. 22, 2025. It was revealed whether ransom was paid or not. However, Intelligence linked the abduction to JAS handlers operating from Ali Ngulde camp in the North-East.

This was followed by the Jan. 3, 2026 Kasuwan Daji attack and an earlier Jan. 5, 2026 assault on a Mobile Police (MOPOL) checkpoint at New Kali village, also in Borgu LGA. This point to a high probability of continued and potentially more daring attacks within Borgu LGA and adjoining areas over the next two weeks.

There are also growing concerns that the violence could spill into Kwara State, particularly Kaiama and Baruten LGAs, which border Kainji National Park. The terrorist groups have had sufficient time to regroup and reposition following recent security operations in parts of Niger State, increasing the likelihood of an operational surge.

“The pattern suggests deliberate expansion rather than isolated criminality,” a counterterrorism expert said. “This is ideological jihadist violence, fused with banditry and cross-border logistics. The Damala attack has further reinforced assessments that JAS/Ansaru factions and JNIM elements now maintain established bases within the Kainji National Park.

The systematic raiding of livestock and foodstuffs, analysts say, reflects the groups’ dependence on local communities for sustenance and their reliance on the park’s ecosystem for concealment, mobility and survival.

Military strategists describe the park as the terrorists’ operational centre of gravity, and, paradoxically, their main vulnerability.

Zagazola suggested that a sustained , intelligence-driven air campaign targeting known hideouts, logistics routes and assembly areas within the park could significantly degrade their combat power.

Such an approach, would fix terrorist elements in place, disrupt their supply chains and create favourable conditions for coordinated ground operations to restore security and prevent further expansion into Kwara State and deeper into the North-Central zone.

The unfolding situation in Borgu is widely seen as a warning sign of the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security threats, where jihadist groups displaced from the North-East and North-West are probing new theatres with weak state presence.

If left unchecked, the Borgu–Kainji axis could become a permanent jihadist sanctuary, linking Sahel-based terrorist networks directly to Nigeria’s heartland.
