Indian High Commissioner asks Nigerian combatants to embrace non-violence 

Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Abhay Thakur has called on combatants in the country to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution of the conflict. 

Speaking at the celebration of Mahatma Gandhi 152nd Posthumous Birthday and the 15th International Day of Non-violence in Abuja organized by the India High Commission in Nigeria, Thakur said it is only the week that embraces violence to resolve crisis while the strong make use of dialogue and non-violence mechanism. 

He said the whole world has a lesson to learn from Mahatma Gandhi who promoted non-violence as the best option to address the crisis. 

He said: “The importance of remembering and celebrating this great man Mahatma Gandhi cannot be overemphasized. This event can only underscore how important he is to us to remember and follow Mahatma Gandhi teachings, even to this day his message is ever more relevant and important because not only did he speak about non-violence, he also spoke a lot about sustainable development.

“And today as we mark the 152nd anniversary of his birth. We also mark the 15th international day of non-violence, that United Nations adopted a resolution to declare Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday as international day of non-violence and this is an important message that the whole world need to adopt non-violence for complete resolution of dispute and for settlement and reconciling differences and actually ensure that terrorism, instability are all tackled in the spirit of mutual accommodation and tolerance and above all non-violence.”

He said violence is destructive and ends up achieving little but when non-violence approaches to settle disputes, it heals the soul and promotes harmonious living.

Thakur said celebrating the day with Yoga was a great combination, explaining that” Yoga which means unity or joining together and Mahatma, meaning a great soul, are worthy combinations.

He asked that the world should learn to embrace both messages from Mahatma Gandhi and Yoga.

Nine Injured in Kwali Farmers–Herders Clash

Nine persons sustained machete injuries in a clash between Bassa farmers and Fulani herders in Gomoni Village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the fight, which broke out on Aug. 9 at about 3:30 p.m., followed alleged destruction of melon and maize farms belonging to the Bassa community by cattle.

It was gathered that the Nigeria army troops
along with joint team of operatives, and vigilantes were deployed to the scene following a distress call.

Six Bassa and three Fulani victims with varying degrees of machete cuts were taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital, Kwali, for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored, while investigation was ongoing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the wedding fatiha of Aisha, daughter of Shehu Aliyu, an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria, and Muhammad Jalal, son of former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna, at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The solemnisation, led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, alongside other Imams, featured prayers for the couple’s blessings.

Vice President Shettima stood in for the bride, while Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu represented the groom, culminating in the presentation of the dowry and the formal tying of the marital knot.

The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki, Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Emir of Borgu, Niger State, Muhammad Sani Dantoro among many others.

Unidentified visitor dies suddenly at Niger Government House Lodge

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the sudden death of an unidentified man who collapsed and died at Government House Lodge, Minna. Zagazola learnt that the incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 2, 2025.

Sources said that the deceased had visited House No. 8, Government House Lodge, in an attempt to see Mr. Sammy, Chairman of Niger Foods. However, upon meeting his host’s absence, the man suddenly took ill.

Medical doctors were reportedly contacted from the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, for urgent attention. Unfortunately, by the time the doctor arrived, the man had already passed away.

Following the report, a team of police operatives from GRA Division visited the scene. The body was photographed and evacuated to the IBB Specialist Hospital Mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
