Leboku-in-Abuja 2025 Festival Celebrates New Yam Festival to Bolster Nigeria’s Rich Cultural Heritage

One of the nation’s most celebrated events, the New Yam ear Festival would berth in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the Kedei Seh Umor-Otutu, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy stage the Lenoku-in-Abuja 2025.
It promises to bolster Nigeria’s cultural heritage and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Yakurr people in Cross River, the South-South and South-East in the nation and the world at large.
Addressing a pre-festival press conference in Abuja, President of Kedei Seh Umor-Otutu, a community-based association, Queency Patrick said the forthcoming festival with the theme: “A celebration of heritage, unity and harvest,” is one of the kind.
She explained that Lenoku-in-Abuja 2025 is an internationally acclaimed New Yam festival that is celebrated on August 30 in Abuja, under auspices of Kedei Seh Umor-Otutu, an association of Ugep people living in the FCT.
Patrick said: “Leboku-in-Abuja-2025 aligns with national goals of cultural preservation, inter-ethnic harmony and in promoting Nigeria as a cultural destination.
“The Federal Capital Territory provides the ideal backdrop to unite heritage and modernity, welcoming all who believe in peace, identity and pride of origin.
“For us, it is not just a cultural event, it is a call to national unity, peace and cultural tourism development.
“It is also an opportunity for us to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Yakurr people in Cross River, the South-South and South-East in the nation and the world at large.”
She further explained that: “The event fosters appreciation of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic-root and culture. Leboku-in-Abuja is more than a festival, it is a stage for celebrating our cultural identity, building bridges through tradition and encouraging investment in the creative economy and tourism sector.”
According to her, Mr Obi Asika, DirectorGeneral/CEO of the National Council for Arts and Culture, had in a letter which formally endorsed the association’s collaboration with government described Leboku-in-Abuja, as annual New Yam Festival celebrated in Abuja by Yakurr people of Cross River.
Patrick further quoted him by saying the Leboku festival, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Yakurr people of Cross River, has long been a symbol of unity, celebration, and agricultural prosperity.
Asika, in the letter noted that: “Bringing this renowned festival to Abuja will provide a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, tourism development, and deeper appreciation of our diverse traditions.
“It aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and NCAC’s mandate to promote arts and culture, as essential drivers or Nigeria’s creative economy,” Asika added.
Patrick revealed the event would provide platform for public lecture, economic empowerment, traditional food festival, cultural and arts exhibition, sports, agriculture, trade and tourism development.
The event scheduled to hold at the Bolton White event centre, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja is centered on promoting unity and peace with the toga: “One Yam, One People.”

Seven pupils injured in Benue school explosion

The Police Command in Benue has confirmed that seven pupils were injured when a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) went off at a primary school in Ukum Local Government Area of the state.
Sources confirmed on Friday that the incident occurred on Sept. 16 at about 2:00 p.m. at the Local Government Education Authority Primary School, Ater Ayange.
He said the explosion happened when some pupils, who found an object in the school premises, began to play with it without knowing it was an explosive device.
“While playing, the pin of the device was pulled off, causing an explosion that injured seven children,” he said.
The sources said the children were rushed to St. Anthony Hospital, Zaki-Biam, where they were receiving treatment and responding well.
He added that the incident was not immediately reported to the police until Sept. 18, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ukum received information and deployed a patrol team to the school and hospital.
He said the Officer-in-Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit had been deployed to sweep the area for possible detection of other hidden explosive objects and determine the nature of the device.
The police further disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had commenced an investigation into the incident.

Suspected hoodlums have set ablaze seven mud houses in Ruwam Jirog Village, Kopmur Mushere West of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau satye.
Sources told Zagazola on Friday that the incident occurred on Sept. 19 at about 12:40 a.m.
The sources said that the hoodlums, suspected to be Fulani militia, invaded the village in the middle of the night and mischievously set fire to the houses.
According to the sources, on receipt of the report, security forces stormed to the scene to restore calm.
The sources added that victims of the incident were admonished not to resort to self-help as discreet investigation had commenced, while concerted efforts were ongoing to track and apprehend the perpetrators.

Police arrest nine suspects for NNPC pipeline vandalism in Taraba

The Police Command in Taraba has arrested nine suspects for alleged vandalism of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) pipelines along Kona Mountains and Minda axis of the state.
Sources said that the suspects were apprehended on Sept. 15 at about 1:10 p.m. while engaging in the act.
The sources gave the names of the suspects as: Lagne Apollos, Isa Aminu, Ahmed Aminu, Kamal Abubakar, Solomon Tanko, Simon Mathias,Victor Kanu, Dogara Patrick amd Emmanuel Apollos.
According to the sources, operatives who acted on credible intelligence stormed the scene and caught the suspects in the act.
The sources added that about 30 cut-to-size pipes used in siphoning petroleum products were recovered as exhibits.
The sources said the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigations, while assuring that the command remained resolute in tackling economic sabotage in the state.
