NSCDC Trains Female Squad on Sustainable Safe School Strategies

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has declared a state of emergency in schools across the country, even as it conducted training for Female squads on sustainable safe school strategies.

A press statement on Tuesday signed by the Director, Public Relations of NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu said in an attempt to proactively protect Nigeria’s educational institutions, the Corps has trained its Specialised Female Squad unit on sustainable measures and strategies to be used in protecting schools nationwide thereby curtailing security threats.

According to him, the Commandant General of the Corps, Dr Ahmed Audi, while declaring the two days Train-The-Trainer Capacity Building Workshop opened at the Corps National Headquarters, Sauka, Abuja, said it has become important to ensure security in our schools.

Audi, who was represented by DCG Crisis and Disaster Management, Nnamdi Nwinyi, noted that the workshop is apt, timely and Germaine to the implementation of the Safe School Initiative of the Federal Government.

He stressed that the workshop is coming at a time the nation is contending with security challenges, which necessitate the need for more pragmatic actions to whittle down the menace of insecurity in the country.

He hinted that the Specialised Female Squad since its establishment has gained significant mileage against the ugly trend of the kidnapping of school children for ransom and commended the Squad for their deliberate efforts in repelling numerous kidnapping attempts on students and more importantly, keeping schools safe at all times.

The CG charged the unit to remain focused, resilient and committed to the security of schools and the protection of students, teachers and other workers.

According to him, “The learning environment should be devoid of violence and crimes in order to attain educational excellence which is key to the growth and development of the nation.

“Nothing in the world could be so precious as our children, which is why we have declared an emergency in this sector to mitigate the multi-faceted threats challenging the nation’s security architecture, especially attacks on institutions of learning by hoodlums, kidnappers and bandits.

“We have developed strategic plans and a robust template that will crystalise into more precise action to prevail over these hostilities and achieve sustainable safe schools in Nigeria.

“Note that the workshop is structured to expand your capacity as members of the Female Squad unit, you are therefore to compare notes, engage in critical thinking and come up with more robust templates to achieve sustainable safe schools in Nigeria”.

Audi assured that schools would remain safe and conducive for Nigerian children as the Corps is intensively collaborating and cooperating with other security operatives in combating all forms of criminalities across the Country.

He charged participants at the workshop to take the lessons, skills and knowledge acquired during the training down to their colleagues and subordinates for effective discharge of duties.

In his remark, the CEO of Supersonic Limited, Frank Ohwofa thanked the Commandant-General for granting their company the opportunity to facilitate the training and praised his foresight in creating the Specialised Female Squad.

He stated that the workshop is conceived to train the Female Squad Unit on new security trends and patterns employed by bandits and kidnappers for ransom.

According to him, “the workshop will interrogate in-depth public emergency security systems that can be deployed by the Corps in collaboration with other stakeholders to effectively harness the kinetic assets of the Corps for maximum performance thereby, enhancing response time to violent incidents in places of learning.

He stated that the workshop is consistent with the imperativeness to provide robust interventionist and proactive measures to mitigate the multi-faceted threats confronting the nation.

He described those chosen to lead in the fight against kidnappings and other forms of insecurity threatening a safe learning environment in this trying moment in our nation’s history as Patriots.

On the other hand, he charged participants to take advantage of the training to build on the training already acquired before now with a view to filling necessary gaps.

He advised them to at the end of the strategic Train-The-Trainer Capacity Building Workshop, domesticate the knowledge and skills acquired in their various State Command Headquarters.

He assured that, with the cream of experts available at the workshop, participants will leave the program sharpened, reinvigorated and better informed with new strategic planning tactics and execution of security protocols in schools.

He called on the Federal Government, State Governments, proprietors of private school owners and all stakeholders in the education sector to give maximum support to the efforts of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps under the able leadership of the current Commandant-General for better security and protection of schools, students, teachers and workers nationwide.

Troops of Operation UDO KA have arrested a suspected spy attempting to infiltrate a military defensive position in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River.

Security sources said the suspect was apprehended at about 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday at Isabang settlement while allegedly conducting reconnaissance on troops’ locations.

According to the sources, troops of the 245 Battalion intercepted the suspect during a routine security sweep, leading to his arrest.

Items recovered from the suspect include a short locally made pistol, a cutlass, a torchlight and two mobile phones.

“During preliminary investigation, the suspect admitted to being a spy allegedly sent by a criminal group to carry out reconnaissance within the community,” the source said.

He added that the suspect also provided useful intelligence, including the identity of one Christopher Emmanuel, popularly known as “Black Stone,” as a member of the group responsible for a recent attack on troops in the area.

The sources noted that troops have since intensified aggressive patrols across the Odonget general area and its environs to deter further hostile activities.

They reaffirmed the commitment of security forces to sustaining pressure on criminal elements and ensuring the safety of residents.

Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Operation UDO KA have arrested two suspected drug peddlers during a raid in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.

Security sources disclosed that the operation was conducted at about 6:00 p.m. on March 14 by troops of the 145 Battalion (Rear) under Operation Crush, Sector 1.

According to the sources, the troops carried out a targeted raid on a suspected drug peddlers’ hideout located along Bende Road following credible intelligence about illicit drug activities in the area.

During the operation, two suspects were apprehended while in possession of substances suspected to be psychotropic drugs.

The troops recovered the exhibits at the scene and secured the area before concluding the operation.

Military authorities said the suspects and the recovered items had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) command in Umuahia for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Security officials noted that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb criminal activities within the state.

They reiterated the commitment of troops to sustain intelligence-driven operations in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment for residents

Troops of the 1 Division Nigerian Army under Operation FANSAN YANMA have rescued six kidnapped victims after engaging suspected terrorists in a gun battle in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the rescue operation followed credible intelligence on the movement of armed terrorists suspected to be transporting abducted victims through forest routes in the area.

According to the sources, troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Gurara, under Sub-Sector 4 of Operation FANSAN YANMA, responded swiftly to the intelligence at about 7 a.m. on March 14.

The troops subsequently laid an ambush at a suspected crossing point used by the terrorists around Sabon Kurutu Village in Kachia LGA.

“During the operation, troops made contact with the terrorists and engaged them in a fierce gun battle. The criminals, overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the troops, fled into the surrounding bush, abandoning some items,” the source said.

Following the engagement, troops combed the general area and successfully rescued six kidnapped victims. However, a seventh victim, a minor, was reported to have died during the crossfire between the troops and the fleeing terrorists.

Troops also recovered three motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists during the movement of the abducted victims.

Preliminary interrogation of the rescued victims revealed that they were abducted earlier on March 14 from Janjala Village in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The victims said they had been moved through forest routes by the terrorists before the troops intercepted them.

The rescued victims and the body of the deceased minor were evacuated to Katari Hospital for medical attention and other necessary procedures.

Military sources said families of the rescued victims had been contacted.

The Military said the troops 1 Division Operation FANSAN YANMA and other task force has continued sustained offensives and intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and bandit networks across the North-West region.
