Ondo Govt honours Aregbesola with cultural award 

The Ondo State government on Thursday honoured the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, with an award of excellence.

The award was presented to Aregbesola by the State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, who was represented at the occasion, held at the Ondo State Cultural Centre by his Chief of Staff, Chief Gbenga Ale.

Presenting the award to Aregbesola, Governor Akeredolu lauded the Minister’s efforts at promoting the culture of the Yoruba race, especially when he served as the Governor of Osun State between 2010 and 2018.

He said the belief of Aregbesola in cultural renaissance and his efforts at promoting the culture of the Yoruba race made him eminently qualify for the award.

Also, Akeredolu who is the chairman, South West Governors Forum, speaking through the organizers said the award presented to Aregbesola was premised on the elevation of the Yoruba anthem by the Aregbesola’s administration in Osun State to the status of state anthem, promotion of the Omoluabi ethos and promotion of human rights and equal recognition of the three major religions in the state during his administration as Governor of Osun State.

He charged the Minister not to relent in his efforts at promoting the Yoruba cultural values, just as he assured that Ondo State will ensure that the Yoruba culture is not relegated to the background.

Speaking, Aregbesola, a two term Governor of Osun State, described culture as the hallmark of human existence, saying knowledge, virtue and productivity clearly define culture.

Aregbesola, who stressed the need for the development of Yoruba culture, said the Yoruba race is blessed with valuable culture and tradition.

The Minister who noted the high premium placed on Yoruba culture outside the shore of the country, said if the various cultural heritage and tourist centres in Yoruba land are well developed, they will be of tremendous economic benefits to the country.

To this end, Aregbesola made a case for cultural renaissance, just as he urged the people to change their orientation and belief about culture.

Also, the Minister hailed the Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, for his belief in Yoruba culture which culminated in the adoption of the Yoruba anthem as the state’s anthem.  

Describing Akeredolu as a liberal person, Aregbesola said Ondo Governor has shown him love and enthusiasm, adding that the Governor is not antagonistic in any way.

He said “Governor Akeredolu is a liberal and understanding politician who believes in the Yoruba nation. This is evident in the adoption of Yoruba anthem as the official anthem of the state. The Governor is a good ambassador of the Yoruba race.”

Nine Injured in Kwali Farmers–Herders Clash

Nine persons sustained machete injuries in a clash between Bassa farmers and Fulani herders in Gomoni Village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the fight, which broke out on Aug. 9 at about 3:30 p.m., followed alleged destruction of melon and maize farms belonging to the Bassa community by cattle.

It was gathered that the Nigeria army troops
along with joint team of operatives, and vigilantes were deployed to the scene following a distress call.

Six Bassa and three Fulani victims with varying degrees of machete cuts were taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital, Kwali, for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored, while investigation was ongoing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the wedding fatiha of Aisha, daughter of Shehu Aliyu, an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria, and Muhammad Jalal, son of former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna, at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The solemnisation, led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, alongside other Imams, featured prayers for the couple’s blessings.

Vice President Shettima stood in for the bride, while Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu represented the groom, culminating in the presentation of the dowry and the formal tying of the marital knot.

The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki, Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Emir of Borgu, Niger State, Muhammad Sani Dantoro among many others.

Unidentified visitor dies suddenly at Niger Government House Lodge

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the sudden death of an unidentified man who collapsed and died at Government House Lodge, Minna. Zagazola learnt that the incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 2, 2025.

Sources said that the deceased had visited House No. 8, Government House Lodge, in an attempt to see Mr. Sammy, Chairman of Niger Foods. However, upon meeting his host’s absence, the man suddenly took ill.

Medical doctors were reportedly contacted from the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, for urgent attention. Unfortunately, by the time the doctor arrived, the man had already passed away.

Following the report, a team of police operatives from GRA Division visited the scene. The body was photographed and evacuated to the IBB Specialist Hospital Mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
