Police Counsel Says the Shooting of a Petitioner By SARS was Legal

Counsel to the police Fidelis Ogwobe has stated before the Independent Investigation panel on Human Rights violation by the defunct SARS and other units of the Nigerian police that the police who shot a petitioner, Tairu Garba acted within the ambit of the law.
According to Ogwobe the shooting of the petitioner was justified in law, sighting the fact that the life of the officer in question was in danger.
Ogwobe while reading his written address before the panel said the complainant has not been able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt and that the case has some elements of criminality, he stated.
He said from the petitioner’s written address regarding the evidence of the second respondent, Ali Abubakar their life was in danger before being shot since the petitioner attempted to snatch police riffle.
It may be recalled that the petitioner, Tairu Garba has petitioned the panel over alleged torture, cruel inhuman and degrading treatment that led to the loss of his leg. He told the panel that sometimes in 2019 he approached a police station in kogi state to make a report of charms and other fetish materials deposited in his community by a rival community.

Narrating further, he said one Inspector Atabo Okpanachi of Enjema police division kogi state and members of his team, who are five in numbers came with a police van one morning, and launched a massive attack on the entire community, shooting sporadically, beating and kicking everyone with all form of degrading treatment.
While trying to enquire from the police the reason for their actions, he was shot at close range by inspector Okpanachi which led to the amputations of one of his legs.
However, Inspector Okpanachi who is the accused in the matter has before the panel exonerated himself when he told the panel that he didn’t shoot the complainant but his colleague, Ali Abubakar pulled the trigger and shot the bullet that led to the amputation of Tairu Garba’s leg.
During cross examination, Inspector Opanachi told the panel that shootings were done for self-defense, he said men on rampage descended on the police vehicle and attacked the police men this according to him led to the shootings that affected the petitioner.
Corroborating the testimony of the petitioner one Gabriel Momoh told the panel that the community did report the matter to the police and the police refused to follow them to witness the charm they claim they saw in their community because it was late and no logistics for such a distress call.
The matter was adjourned for report.

ISWAP Terrorists Kill Hunters’ Leader in Borno

Suspected ISWAP terrorists have killed the chairman of the hunters’ group in Garjang village, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 5 a.m. on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Habu Dala, 53, was abducted from his home by the terrorists, who took him through Mulharam to Forfot villages in Damboa LGA.
Villagers mobilised in search of Dala and later found his corpse bearing gunshot wounds.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and the hunters’ group visited the scene.
The remains were evacuated to the General Hospital, Damboa, where he was certified dead and later released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Nine Injured in Kwali Farmers–Herders Clash

Nine persons sustained machete injuries in a clash between Bassa farmers and Fulani herders in Gomoni Village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the fight, which broke out on Aug. 9 at about 3:30 p.m., followed alleged destruction of melon and maize farms belonging to the Bassa community by cattle.
It was gathered that the Nigeria army troops
along with joint team of operatives, and vigilantes were deployed to the scene following a distress call.
Six Bassa and three Fulani victims with varying degrees of machete cuts were taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital, Kwali, for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored, while investigation was ongoing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the wedding fatiha of Aisha, daughter of Shehu Aliyu, an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria, and Muhammad Jalal, son of former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna, at the National Mosque, Abuja.
The solemnisation, led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, alongside other Imams, featured prayers for the couple’s blessings.
Vice President Shettima stood in for the bride, while Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu represented the groom, culminating in the presentation of the dowry and the formal tying of the marital knot.
The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki, Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Emir of Borgu, Niger State, Muhammad Sani Dantoro among many others.
