Security forces bust child trafficking syndicate in akwa ibom, arrest five

Security forces in Akwa Ibom have arrested five suspected members of a child trafficking syndicate along the Ikot Ekpene–Aba highway.

Zagazola Makama learnt from sources that detectives attached to the Criminal Surveillance Unit (CSU), while on stop-and-search duty on Aug. 28, intercepted an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Uwakmfom Transportation Company.

According to the sources , one of the passengers, identified as Precious Emmanuel Bassey, was found with a two-year-old girl, Glory Edet Etim, but could not give a satisfactory account of the child.

“She was immediately arrested and, upon interrogation, confessed that she was taking the child to Lagos for trafficking. She also admitted to having earlier sold another child,” said the sources.

The sources added that based on her confession, four other suspects Godspower Edet, Esther Effiong Edet, Mandu Asuquo Sampson and Eli Adolphus were arrested.

Sources said discreet investigation was ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate and recover previously trafficked children.

Bandits kill three, injure teenager in Niger community attack

Armed bandits have killed three persons and injured a teenage girl in an attack on Bakinbara village, Babanna district, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Sources said the attack occurred in the early hours of Sept. 19, when bandits in large numbers stormed the community.

“Two young men, identified as Ismaila Magaji, 28, and Joshua Magaji, 25, were captured, tied under a tree and slaughtered by the attackers.

“The village head of Bakinbara, Usman Sabi, 85, was shot dead, while a 14-year-old girl, Fatima Ahmadu, sustained gunshot wounds on her left leg,” he said.

According to the sources , the hoodlums also set ablaze six houses and a motorcycle before fleeing into the forest.

Army troops, police and local hunters had been deployed to the area and were on the trail of the attackers.

The sources added that the injured victim was taken to General Hospital, New-Bussa, where she was receiving treatment.

On the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly holding in New York, United States of America, between Monday, September 22 and Sunday 28, 2025.

Senator Shettima who is scheduled to join other leaders at the global event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations slated for Monday, September 22 at the UN headquarters in New York, will also join other dignitaries at the high-level general debates from Tuesday, September 23 to Sunday 28.

On behalf of President Tinubu, VP Shettima will also deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24 between 3:00pm and 9:00pm, New York time.

Besides, the Vice President will attend a special event on Climate for Heads of State and Government to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General on Wednesday, September 24, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, where Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Senator Shettima is also slated to attend the high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing to be hosted by the President of Kenya on September 24 and attend to other bilateral meetings and events.

After attending UNGA, the Vice President will leave for Frankfurt, Germany, where he is slated to meet with officials of the Deutche Bank before returning to Nigeria.

NAF neutralises 32 insurgents after attack on Banki that claimed two soldier, civilian

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has neutralised 32 Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents following a coordinated night attack on Banki, Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

Zagazola gathered that the attack, which occurred on Sept. 18 at about 10:15 p.m., targeted Bula Yobe Forward Operating Base (FOB), 152 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, and the Divisional Police Headquarters in Banki.

Two soldiers and a nine-year-old boy, identified as Ismail Abubakar, were killed during the assault, while three military vehicles were set ablaze by the terrorists.

According to sources, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai was tasked after ground troops in Bula Yobe and Banki came under heavy attack.

An Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, Grey Raptor, was deployed to track the movement of the insurgents after withdrew northwards from Banki.

Guided by the ISR feed, two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft carried out three successive air interdiction passes, engaging terrorists moving along a track and others gathered at two separate assembly points with logistics.

The coordinated strikes neutralised more than 25 insurgents in the assembly areas and others on the move, bringing the total figure to 32.

The bodies of the two fallen soldiers were evacuated to the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, while that of the minor was released to relatives for burial in line with Islamic rites.

To stabilise the area, additional reinforcements, have been deployed to Banki and its environs.
