Troops repel failed ambush in Borno, eliminate 13 terrorists, recover weapons

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have eliminated 13 Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists who attempted to ambush a military convoy escorting humanitarian supplies at Kareto in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno.

Zagazola report that the ambush, which occurred on Wednesday along the Gubio–Damasak road, was characterised by the detonation of two command Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) followed by heavy gunfire from the terrorists.

Sources said that the troops responded swiftly, taking battle positions and unleashing superior firepower that overwhelmed the insurgents.

“In the ensuing exchange, 13 terrorists were neutralised instantly, while others fled in disarray. The troops then pursued the fleeing elements, further exploiting the area,” the source said.

During the operation, the soldiers recovered eight AK-47 rifles, ten magazines, and a large cache of 7.62mm ammunition, as well as a camel bag, several rolls of detonating cord, and multiple primed IEDs.

However, the encounter was not without setbacks. One soldier sustained a minor injury and is reported to be in stable condition. Four Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) tyres were damaged, while two trucks were engulfed in flames during the firefight.

The source emphasised that the operation highlighted the troops’ professionalism and resilience under pressure, noting that the insurgents’ attempt to disrupt humanitarian relief efforts failed completely.

“The escort mission was successfully completed, and the relief materials have since been secured and delivered to Damasak,” the officer added.

The source further explained that the troops have sustained deliberate clearance operations in the general area to deny the terrorists freedom of action and to maintain secure corridors for humanitarian access.

Operation Hadin Kai continues to provide both combat support and humanitarian escort missions across the North-East, where remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP remain active in remote border areas.

Troops kill over 50 terrorists as they repel multiple attacks in Borno, Yobe — military

By: Zagazola Makama

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have killed more than 50 terrorists and repelled multiple coordinated attacks on military locations across Borno and Yobe States, in what has been described as the biggest blow against insurgents in 2025.

The Nigerian military said the simultaneous attacks occurred between midnight and 0400 hours on Thursday when terrorists launched assaults on troops’ positions in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo and Katarko, situated within Sectors 1 and 2 of the Joint Operations Area.

Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East (OPHK), in a statement on Thursday in Maiduguri, said the troops fought gallantly and professionally, repelling the attacks and inflicting devastating losses on the terrorists.

“In all instances, troops stood firm, fought gallantly, and professionally repelled the attacks, dealing the terrorists a heavy, decisive and bloody blow,” Uba stated.

He said the coordinated ground and air operations, backed by precision strikes from the Air Component of OPHK, led to the neutralisation of over 50 terrorists across all the locations.

According to him, troops also recovered 38 AK-47 rifles, seven PKT machine guns, five RPG tubes, two GPMGs, hand grenades, and thousands of assorted rounds of ammunition after the clashes.

“The precision strikes, coupled with enhanced battlefield awareness provided by the Theatre’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets, gave troops additional leverage and impetus to respond with overwhelming and lethal force,” Uba added.

He disclosed that over 70 wounded terrorists were being pursued by ground troops, with the Air Component maintaining close coordination to ensure total clearance of the fleeing remnants.

Intelligence reports, he said, indicated that the attackers who stormed Dikwa and Gajibo manoeuvred from the Cameroon axis, while those who attacked Katarko emerged from the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious terrorist enclave.

Uba said some gallant troops sustained injuries but were in stable condition, while some vehicles and buildings in Mafa and Dikwa were gutted by fire following RPG and drone attacks by the terrorists.

He noted that despite the heavy onslaught, the troops maintained control of all their positions and repelled the coordinated strikes with renewed strength and professionalism.

“The Military High Command has commended the gallantry, doggedness and renewed charge of the troops. Their steadfast performance once again reaffirms the military’s unwavering resolve and capacity to defend the nation’s territorial integrity,” he added.

Security analysts described the coordinated defeat of the terrorists across multiple fronts as the single largest operational success against insurgents in 2025, marking a major turning point in the counter-terrorism campaign in the North East.

Gombe father submits son for measles vaccination after evading immunisation in school

Delaying or refusing some or all vaccines for your child puts their health and life at risk, this is an old message that is rapidly being understood in Gombe State especially with the impressive turnout of parents bringing their children to participate in the ongoing 2025 Integrated Measles–Rubella and Polio Campaign, amongst whom is Malam Abdulkarim Bello.

Bello, a father of eight children, on Tuesday rode his nine-year-old son on his commercial motorcycle to Bolari West Primary HealthCare Centre to supervise his immunisation against measles.

Our Correspondent reports that the boy who ran away from school to evade taking the vaccine being administered to his colleagues by Community Health Workers who came to his school in Bolari West, was made to take the vaccine under the watchful eyes of his father.

Bello, a motorcyclist in Gombe said he came home to have a rest having worked for hours to earn some income to take care of his household, only to meet his son who left home earlier for school.

On probing the child, knowing full well that the school was yet to close for the day, “ I learnt that he ran away from school just to evade taking the vaccine.

“ I had to suspend my job and bring him here (to Bolari PHC) to get him vaccinated under my supervision.

“I am doing this because I don’t want to see him sick, I heard over the radio that the vaccine is available and good for them, that’s why I brought him.

“I brought him because his running away from school is like running away from what will protect him.

“As his father, I have the right to ensure that he is healthy because his elderly ones had also taken the vaccine,” he said.

He said with the damage that measles and other children-related illnesses had done to children, “I will not allow my son to reject the vaccine that should protect him against such life-threatening illness.”

Bello urged parents, particularly fathers to support the exercise by bringing their children out for vaccination as a way of protecting them from childhood killer diseases.

Bello’s conviction about the relevance of vaccines in improving the health of his children, has highlighted the positive role of the media in efforts at boosting the health of children in the state while reducing infant mortality.

Mr Abdulkarim Aliyu, the State Immunisation Officer, Gombe State Primary HealthCare Development Agency said that the state had successfully vaccinated no fewer than 481, 734 as of day three of the ongoing integrated vaccination campaign in the state.

Aliyu disclosed this on Tuesday in Gombe after monitoring the immunisation in different communities in the state in company of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria team.
He stated that the campaign was targeting 1.7 million children for measles-rubella vaccination.

According to him, over 30 per cent of eligible children had been vaccinated as of evening of day three of the campaign.

“About 1.8million doses of MR vaccines were received for Gombe State and we are targeting 1.7million children.

“ For now, 481, 734 children have been vaccinated as of the evening of day three and if we add Day four then the figure would be higher.

“For the Oral Polio Vaccine, we received over 1 million doses and as of the evening of day three of the campaign, 253, 772 children have been reached with the vaccine,” he said.
Aliyu expressed optimism that with the large turn out and low resistance witnessed so far, the state would meet its target by at least 95 per cent.

Our Correspondent who monitored the exercise in some selected PHCs and schools in Gombe metropolis reports that there were large turn out for vaccination.
Community health workers were seen at different schools, administering vaccines to eligible children.

Mrs Asmau Madi, a resident of Gidan Magani who visited the PHC in her community to get her child vaccinated commended the state government, UNICEF and other partners for their efforts at reducing child mortality.

Madi said since embracing vaccination with the support of her husband, her children’s health had been improved, minimising the tendency of them falling ill regularly.
She encouraged women in the state to bring out their children for the exercise, adding that the vaccines were safe for children.

Mr Abdullahi Bello, the Ward Focal Person for immunisation, Bolari West said that the Ward has 16 settlements being covered by his team.
Bello stated that there had been massive turn out of residents for the exercise since the beginning of the campaign four days ago.
He said as of Day 3, over 3000 children had been vaccinated, stressing that the ongoing campaign had yielded better acceptance than previous exercises.

“The level of awareness for this campaign was massive and it covered all stakeholders at the grassroots and that’s why we are getting more acceptance and no rejection for now,” he said.
Our Correspondent reports that Dr Rownak Khan, the Deputy Representative, UNICEF Nigeria; Dr Kabiru Shall, UNICEF Nigeria Immunisation Manager and Oluseyi Olosunde, UNICEF Nigeria Health Officer had been in the state monitoring the exercuse for the past two days.

They visited the state central cold store and similar facilities at some LGAs to monitor the vaccine management situation while also visiting some traditional leaders in Billiri LGA to solicit their support.

The 2025 Integrated Measles Rubella Campaign is led by the Gombe State government and supported by WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Rotary International, and the Gates Foundation — all working together as partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
The campaign aims to vaccinate children aged 0 months to 14 years against Measles and Rubella, Polio, HPV and routine immunisation.

The vaccines provide protection against childhood killer diseases and have been used worldwide for over 50 years, saving millions of lives.
