WHD: NEMA Applauds Humanitarian Workers

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has applauded humanitarian workers in the country especially its staff who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving others.

NEMA, in a statement by its Director General, Mustapha Ahmed to commemorate the 2023 World Humanitarian Day, also acknowledged those who have suffered injury, trauma, and tragic experiences while actively engaged in their roles.

According to the agency, it has documented instances of staff losing their lives and being kidnapped, underscoring the challenges faced by those who dedicate themselves to providing assistance in times of crisis.

The statement expressed his solidarity with the staff, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees, LEMCs, and other humanitarian partners.

Ahmed, in the statement recognized their role in collectively improving the wellbeing of communities and humanity at large.
Ahmed further reinforced the importance of unwavering commitment to delivering life-saving assistance, echoing the sentiment of #NoMatterWhat.

He said: “As part of the World Humanitarian Day, we must take a pause to remember and celebrate NEMA humanitarian actors that have lost their lives and those that have suffered injury and trauma in the line of duty. It is on record that some NEMA staff have lost their lives and some kidnapped while many others have suffered tragic experiences while on active duty.”

He added that: “On this auspicious day, I want to express my solidarity with the staff of NEMA, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), the Nigeria Red Cross, the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent, the numerous NEMA partners, the UN system and community volunteers working in various hotspots in Nigeria and across the world.

“There is no doubt that your commitment to giving succor to persons in distress has enabled us to collectively make our communities and the world a better place for us and the future generation of humanity to live in dignity, peace and prosperity.

“Despite all the difficulties and dangers faced as humanitarian workers, we must not give up on our commitment to deliver life-saving assistance to people in need, #NoMatterWhat.”

Troops Arrest Two Militias, Recover Arms in Plateau

Troops of Operation Safe Haven have arrested two suspected militias and recovered firearms in Angwan Mata, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation, conducted on Tuesday at about 11:10 AM by troops of Sector 8, followed credible intelligence on the activities of armed groups of Mwaghavul origin in the area.

The arrested suspects, identified as Innocent Nanpan (20) and Sebastine Samuel (20), were found in possession of a fabricated rifle and four cartridges.

According to security sources, the suspects and the recovered arms and ammunition are in custody for further investigation.

Troops Arrest Security Guard, Recover Weapons in Plateau

Troops of Operation Safe Haven, Sector 3, have arrested a security guard, Mr. John Bala, for alleged possession of illegal firearms in Miango Village, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama the arrest was made at about 9:18 PM on Monday during a special operation codenamed Golden Peace, following credible intelligence.

Items recovered from the suspect included a fabricated rifle, seven rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition, five mobile phones, and a cash sum of N120,000.

The suspect, a 43-year-old security guard at Anan School of Accountancy, is currently in the custody of the troops for further investigation.

Interior Minister Orders Investigation into Alleged Criminal Activities in Okere Correctional Centre

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has directed the immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations of criminal activities within the Okere Correctional Centre, Warri, Delta State, which have recently been reported in the media.

The Minister, in a statement signed by his spokesman, Babatunde Alao on Tuesday strongly condemned the alleged reprehensible behaviour and emphasizes that any form of indiscipline and misconduct will be met with severe consequences.

The Minister was quoted to have said: “I will not allow indiscipline to fester under my nose. Any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law. The leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) must provide explanations.”

He reiterated his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice within correctional service system.

He said: “We take these allegations seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our correctional facilities.”

The Minister however called on the general public to provide any relevant information that may aid in the investigation.
