Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday paid an assessment visit to Malam-Fatori, a former Boko Haram stronghold on the shores of the Lake Chad.

Malam-Fatori is headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area (LGA) in northern Borno and is yet to be fully reoccupied by residents since Boko Haram violently took over the town around 2014 and forced residents to flee to Niger Republic. The military dislodged the insurgents but it was not clear in what year.

Zulum had visited Malam-Fatori a couple of times, first to commence reconstruction and other times to supervise ongoing works.

In his latest visit (Tuesday) the governor held interactions with troops at 68 battalion of the Nigerian Army in charge of the town who also lead the fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the area.

Zulum was received by the commanding officer of 68 battalion, Malam-Fatori, Col. A. Onyeukwu.

The governor announced his approval for the soon to be released armoured personnel carriers (APCs), patrol vehicles and some security gadgets for soldiers.

The support, Zulum noted, was to strengthen the military’s capacity to increase their effectiveness in the fight against insurgents.

The governor commended the officers and men of 68 Battalion, Malam-Fatori, for their bravery and professionalism in discharging their duties.

… Targets May for resettlement

Meanwhile, Governor Zulum during the visit, disclosed that his purpose was to see for himself the clearance process in the town and to also offer support to the military ahead of his target for safe and voluntary return of refugees from to Malam-Fatori community.

The refugees are currently in neighboring Bosso, Tumur and Diffa, all in the Republic of Niger.

The governor is targeting May for resettlement of the refugees.

“My main objective here is to see for myself the clearance exercise and discuss how we can return people. The town was displaced due to flood last year”, Zulum said.

He added, “we want the people to return next month (May) for normal activities to return to this part of the state, insha’Allah. We will give all the necessary support to the Nigerian military to make sure that this objective is achieved, insha’Allah. We call on our people to be resilient and give maximum cooperation to the security operatives working to restore normalcy” Zulum said during his interaction with the commanding officer of 68 battalion, Malam-Fatori, Col. A. Onyeukwu.

Zulum was accompanied by the House of reps-elect for Marte, Monguno and Nganzai, Engr. Bukar Talba, Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, Transition Council Chairman of Abadam and some prominent indigenes of Abadam.

Breaking: Kanu fails to open defence, cites former counsel’s retention of case file

By: Zagazola Makama

The detained leader of the proscribed separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday failed to open his defence in his ongoing terrorism trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu attributed his inability to present his defence to the failure of his former legal team, led by former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Kanu Agabi, to hand over his case file, preventing him from adequately preparing.

The defendant was initially slated to open his defence on Thursday but instead announced the sacking of his legal team and requested a short adjournment until Friday.

On Friday, the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), informed the court that the case was scheduled for Kanu to open his defence. When called, Kanu informed the court he could not proceed as those responsible for delivering his case file to the Department of State Services (DSS) facility, where he is being held, had failed to do so.

Kanu prayed for an adjournment until Monday, October 27, to access the case file and familiarise himself with its contents. He further stated he was expecting witnesses from the United Kingdom, the United States, Kenya, and Ethiopia, and requested an order allowing him to meet with them over the weekend for preparation.

The court granted his request, instructing the DSS to allow Kanu receive visitors on Saturday and Sunday. Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial till October 27 for Kanu to open his defence, warning that the six days initially granted for his defence, which began on October 23, will not be extended.
