2023: Can Mohammed beats Betara at the Poll?

The party primaries have come and gone despite the many challenges they might have gone through, especially their members who had aspired for various elective positions to serve their people.

The Borno State political arena was one place that I kept my ears glued to; particularly Biu/ Kwaya – Kusar/ Shani and Bayo federal constituency where APC and PDP had to slug it out between Betara Aliyu and Hon. Joan Mohammed.

It was gathered that some elites from the ruling party may be out against their candidate to throw their weight behind Joan Mohammed of the People’s Democratic Party in their bid to displace the current representative.

Their hope is to stand with one vibrant woman politician, who stood out in this area under the platform of PDP to seek for the votes to represent this constituency at the National Assembly in 2023.

The question is, can Hon. Joan Mohammed displaced Betara Aliyu? She had contested twice for this elective post 2019 and 2022 and had shown the capacity to handle men in the game and with support now coming from heavy weight in the ruling party, the Federal constituency where Betara held sway in the last decades may be very interested.

Hon. Mohammed from Wandali village – Kondi Ward in Kwaya Kusa Local Government Area of Borno State is fondly called Mama Joan. She was a banker with financial connections. They called her the iron lady of PDP and have presently changed the political field by her art of politicking according to reports on ground.

Reports are also brewing that Betara has fallen out of favour with the government owing to a bad relationship with some decision makers from Biu. The crowd gathering at his presentation in Biu was also said to have pinned him against the forces in Maiduguri given reasons for insider betrayal where rumour has it that strong hands may give support for Hon. Joan Mohammed in the coming election.

Interestingly, Hon. Joan Mohammed is the first National woman delegate of PDP from Borno who also led the National Delegates from that axis and presented them for the PDP presidential primary elections where Atiku Abubakar emerged as presidential hopeful.

Red lines have been drawn with Atiku’s weight and enemies from within, can Betara pull out against Joan Mohammed as he did in the past? The days ahead may either bless or cause his outing in 2023 as Hon. Joan Mohammed remains optimistic that she can deliver and retire Betara permanently from politics.
