An overwhelming loud screaming greeted Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno state, when he arrived in Biu on Tuesday. There was no disputing the reality that the governor will leave a more lasting impression on history thanks to his leadership. In this study, James Bwala navigates the commitments made by the Zulum administration to advocate the democratic dividends for the people of the southern Borno region’s Biu local government area.
NEWSng spoke with Alhaji Yusuf Adamu, the former head of the local government in Biu, who is also a member of the governor’s entourage. The governor’s extended hands in ensuring that road improvements, education programs, and healthcare services take the lead in his administrative priorities surprised Adamu, a significant political figure and stakeholder in Biu.
“The governor has done brilliantly in providing the rewards of democracy to the people of Biu with much astounding outset,” claims Adamu. He said, narrating. “I’m currently with the governor in Biu. I arrived at the Government House about 8:00 am for the 9:00 am departure for the trip to Biu. However, there was a delay since the governor had to go to Moro-Moro market after it flooded. We thus departed at around 10:00.
“When we arrived in Buratai town, the enormous undertaking that the Borno state government had undertaken left me stunned. In the town, the government constructed an ultramodern school. I shouldn’t have been surprised, given the governor’s strong commitment to education, but I was nonetheless taken aback by the development. After the school was officially opened, the governor ordered that teachers be hired right away and should make up the vast majority of those living there.
“We traveled from Buratai to Garubula, where he examined the road works being done in Maphlau. He looked over the Mirga to Gunda road building. We halt at the bridge that connects Borno with the neighboring states of Yobe and Gombe. I watched the governor listen to people during the inspection trip and ask them questions while reassuring them that his government would uphold the oath of office he swore at his inauguration.

“The majority of his inquiries mostly related to the government’s need assessment for the different projects it is undertaking in the Biu general districts. He demonstrated his skill with time management by asking questions that had timelines. I informed the governor that the road we had examined leads to the well-known Ashaka town in Gombe State, and I was surprised when he assured me that he would see to it that the project was linked to Ashaka town because of its significance for local commerce and agriculture.”
Adamu added that the governor spent time listening to some of the young people who spoke to him about the opening of hospitals that the government had previously built in the region and gave them the assurance that the hospital will open while he was still in Biu.
“He also inquired about nearby large towns. He inquired specifically about Mandara-girau. He inquired as to whether residents of that town had returned to their homes after Boko Haram incidents, and I informed him that the majority had. He subsequently promised that he would expand initiatives both to the neighborhood and to other significant towns like Gur and Garubula.” The former Biu Chairman said.
Alhaji Yusuf Adamu said that he believes that all that is needed in the Biu area is to be carried along in the sharing of the dividends of democracy and that the government under Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has been doing excellently in that regard.
According to him, “A large crowd welcomed the governor and his entourage in Biu where he also went to the Emir’s palace as tradition demands to pay courtesy. The welcoming was overwhelming. When giving his brief remark, the governor assured the Emir and the people of his will not to deter in doing what is right and in building areas like Biu. Today, the governor is Commissioning a world class school in Biu town. This is what we need.
“Zulum for me has touched on every area of needs for the people. For many years Biu has had no good secretariat but with the coming of Zulum, we now have a building of modern standard as our new secretariat. The government is currently doing renovation works at Waka Advance Teachers College and Waka Secondary School. He is also considering linking Waka and Biu with a good road. If that is done it would be a gateway for expansion in the area.” Alhaji Yusuf Adamu said.
