2023 Elections: British High Commission Promises to Keep an Eye on Legal Proceedings
2023 Elections: British High Commission Promises to Keep an Eye on Legal Proceedings
By: Our Reporter
The British High Commission in Nigeria has said despite high level of violence during the last Gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections, it had marked improvement over the earlier Presidential and National Assembly elections, promising to keep an eye on legal proceedings at the court
A signed statement on Wednesday by the
Senior Communications & Public Diplomacy Officer, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the British High Commission, Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, while disclosing that the British High Commission observed the gubernatorial elections on 18 March, sending teams to Benue, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Oyo and Rivers States, said: “We observed improvements around elections logistics by INEC during the gubernatorial elections, particularly when compared to the Presidential elections. More polling units opened on time, there was greater evidence of BVAS and IREV working and results uploaded in real time from polling units and collation centres. These are positive markers to build on for future elections.
“However, there were notable points of concern. Members of our observation mission personally observed violence, and voter suppression in numerous voting locations. We witnessed and received credible reports from other observer missions and civil society organisations of vote buying and voter intimidation, the destruction and hijacking of election materials and the general disruption of the process in numerous states including Lagos, Enugu and Rivers.
“In addition, we observed incidents of harassment of journalists. Freedom of speech and a free press are crucial for a healthy democracy, and journalists must be able to go about their work without being threatened.”
The statement added that: “The UK is concerned by the use of inflammatory ethno-religious language by some public and political figures. We call on all leaders not just to distance themselves from this kind of language, but to prevent those who speak on their behalf from doing so in this way.
“It is a testament to their commitment to democracy that many Nigerians were prepared to vote despite being faced with intimidation and hostility.”
The statement recalled that the UK Minister of State for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell MP, had said on 21 February, that the UK was prepared to take action against those who engage in or incite electoral violence and other anti-democratic behaviours, noting that the action could include preventing people from obtaining UK visas or imposing sanctions under human rights sanctions regime.”
The statement revealed that collation of relevant information is currently undertaken, with a view to taking action against some individuals.
@We urge any party or individual who wishes to challenge the process or outcome of the elections to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channels. We will be observing the course of legal challenges made,” the statement further said, insisting that: “The 2023 elections are not only important to Nigeria and Nigerians, but to Africa and the world as a whole. As a long-term partner, the UK is committed to strengthening the ties between our countries and peoples, including by supporting democratic development.”

END NEEDLESS SPECULATIONS ON APC 2027 PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING MATE
PRESS STATEMENT
END NEEDLESS SPECULATIONS ON APC 2027 PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING MATE
Our attention has been drawn to growing media frenzy about possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate to President Bola Tinubu under the platform of our great Party ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
While these stories have been mostly subtle, they recently assumed a new dimension when names of specific individuals were touted as possible replacement for Vice President Shettima.
Our Party states in categorical terms that the stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless.
We urge media organizations to refrain from lending their platforms to rumour-peddlers and mischievous “news sources” of questionable provenance whose only intention is to promote discord and confusion in the polity.
Under our laws and electoral regulations, the ban on political activities remains in force. At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and entrenching its bold reforms that are now steadily transforming the economy, building prosperity, and uplifting the living conditions of our people.
We call on our ministers, senior government and Party officials to avoid, wittingly or unwittingly, stoking needless speculations, and to focus on their primary duty of diligent service to government and our Party, and bolster the success and achievements of President Tinubu, our inimitable and visionary leader.
Signed:
Felix Morka, CON

In the complex arena of Nigerian politics, the partnership between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima stands as a formidable alliance, one that promises to steer the nation through its myriad challenges. This the president himself has said times and again. As the duo embarks on the journey of actualizing the Renewed Hope Agenda, it becomes increasingly clear that Vice President Shettima is not just a figurehead but rather an indispensable partner in this endeavor. President Tinubu’s assertion that “Vice President Kashim Shettima remains the best partner” sends a strong message for the bench debate that nobody is replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima. This is not merely an affirmation of loyalty but a testament to the strategic importance Shettima holds in the administration. The reasons for underpinning this partnership also highlight Shettima’s pivotal role during the 2023 election campaign, his unique qualifications, and the significant contributions he will continue to make towards Nigeria’s aspirations for renewed hope.

At the core of their partnership lies a history of shared vision and purpose. Vice President Kashim Shettima played a vital role in President Tinubu’s electoral success during the 2023 presidential elections. In a fiercely competitive landscape, marked by intense campaigns and public scrutiny, Shettima emerged as a key strategist—an indispensable battle axe in Tinubu’s political arsenal. His background as the former governor of Borno State provided him with invaluable experience in governance and crisis management, essential qualities that resonate deeply with the current socio-political climate of Nigeria. By choosing Shettima as his running mate, Tinubu not only secured a political ally but also brought on board a leader who understands the pressing issues facing Nigeria, particularly in security and humanitarian matters.

The question of leadership in Nigeria cannot be divorced from the country’s ongoing security challenges. The insurgency in the Northeast, where Shettima served as governor during the peak of Boko Haram’s activities, has transformed him into a figure of resilience and determination. His tenure was marked by commendable efforts to tackle insecurity and rehabilitate communities torn apart by conflict. Shettima’s firsthand experience with these issues equips him with insights that are crucial for shaping Nigeria’s security policies as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Kashim Shettima’s commitment to educational reform and economic revitalization further enhances his value within the administration. His initiatives have always transcended mere governance; they reflect a deep-seated belief in the power of education as a catalyst for social change. As vice president, Shettima undoubtedly advocated for policies that prioritize educational access while simultaneously addressing the economic disparities that many Nigerians face. His understanding of local sentiments and development challenges has enabled him to effectively contribute to broader national policies that aim to uplift communities across the country.

As “Jagoran” of Arewa today, his strategic role in governance, Vice President Shettima’s presence serves to unify diverse segments of Nigeria’s populace. His roots in the North and his reputation for inclusiveness speak volumes about his capacity to bridge regional divides. This ability to engage with various stakeholders is crucial as Nigeria seeks to foster national cohesion amid its diversity. With Shettima, Tinubu has fortified his administration with a leader who can appeal to different ethnicities and religious affiliations, thereby enhancing the government’s legitimacy and acceptance across the country.

Amidst speculations regarding potential shifts in the political landscape as the next election approaches, it remains critical to emphasize that vice presidents often play transformative roles in governance—roles that extend beyond the confines of traditional expectations. Shettima’s abilities and experiences position him perfectly to transcend the limitations often imposed on the vice presidency. His proactive approach in the administration signifies a departure from the norm and sets a precedent for future leaders in similar positions. By affirming that Shettima will not be replaced, President Tinubu reinforces the notion that effective governance requires collaborative efforts anchored in trust and mutual respect.

It is also important to consider the implications of political continuity and stability in Nigeria’s ever-evolving political framework. The 2027 elections will present new challenges and opportunities for the Tinubu-Shettima administration. Shettima’s role as a steadfast partner ensures that the initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda are not simply transient political promises but rather enduring commitments to the Nigerian people. His familiarity with the administration’s objectives will facilitate seamless transitions in policy implementation, continuity in governance, and sustained momentum toward achieving the overarching goals of national development.
In advocating for Shettima’s continued partnership, one cannot overlook the significance of loyalty and reliability in political alliances. The foundation of any successful administration lies in the trust placed in its leadership team. Shettima has proven to be not just a reliable partner but also a courageous leader who navigated turbulent political waters alongside Tinubu. Their shared experiences in the run-up to the 2023 elections foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual support that will undoubtedly serve them well in the years to come.

Critics may argue that the political environment warrants periodic changes in leadership to inject fresh ideas. While innovation is essential for progress, it is equally critical to recognize that substantial transformation requires consistency in vision and execution. Shettima embodies both qualities, rendering him an irreplaceable figure as Nigeria journeys towards revitalization. His adept understanding of the challenges at hand, coupled with a commitment to innovative solutions, positions him as an indispensable asset within the Tinubu administration.
The global context surrounding Nigeria adds an additional layer of complexity to domestic governance. With international markets fluctuating and geopolitical tensions rising, having a seasoned leader like Shettima by Tinubu’s side is invaluable. His experience in navigating international partnerships and fostering economic collaborations will be instrumental in positioning Nigeria favorably on the world stage. As the duo embraces the challenges of the future, their combined strengths will offer Nigeria the resilience needed to thrive amidst uncertainty.

In the intricate landscape of Nigerian politics, few figures have evoked as much scrutiny and discourse as Vice President Kashim Shettima. His role in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become a focal point of both support and dissent, leading many to call for his replacement. Those against Shettima often cite no reason to back their claims. These are individuals who lack loyalty as a key benchmark for leadership. They are often individuals who did not stand beside President Tinubu during his arduous journey to the presidency. But they feel they could now take center stage in deciding for Tinubu his next move towards 2027.
They never understood who Kashim Shettima was and who he is now as Vice President of Nigeria. While this perspective warrants a deeper examination, it reveals an underlying current of discord among political factions and, more importantly, misreads the dynamics of governance and loyalty. To understand why calls for Shettima’s replacement could be ultimately misguided, one must first recognize the value of stability and continuity within the ranks of leadership. The relationship between a president and vice president is critical; it must be rooted in trust and mutual understanding.

Vice President Shettima has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the administration’s vision, even amid challenges. His background as a former governor of Borno State provides him with unique insights into governance, particularly in addressing security issues that plague regions like northeast Nigeria.
Those advocating for his ousting seem to overlook the fact that political maneuvers often serve self-interest rather than the collective aspirations of the citizenry. Many of the names being floated as potential successors were not part of President Tinubu’s inner circle during his campaign. This raises questions: what qualifications do these individuals possess that make them more suited for the vice presidency than Shettima? Is their allegiance more than a matter of convenience? It is alarming to witness individuals who once stood on the sidelines suddenly positioning themselves as viable contenders when the political tide appears favorable.

The tactics employed by those pushing for a change reflect a troubling trend of undermining a sitting administration from within. By attempting to sideline Shettima at gatherings and shaping narratives intended to discredit him, these dissenters inadvertently undermine the unity that is pivotal for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Such actions can erode the party’s strength as they sow division and foster an environment of mistrust. These are not the behaviors of loyalists; rather, they are characteristic of opportunists seeking personal aggrandizement at the expense of collective goals.
Critically, we also must consider President Tinubu’s position in all of this. He has shown steadfastness in his leadership style, often prioritizing the long-term vision of his administration over transient political gamesmanship. President Tinubu is unlikely to succumb to pressures from factions seeking to manipulate his choices, especially from among those who have displayed questionable loyalty. His leadership ethos appears to prioritize unity and strategic forward-thinking, suggesting that he values collaboration over division.

The current political climate requires deliberate engagement and cooperation among all stakeholders in the APC. President Tinubu’s commitment to governance will not be swayed by the antics of those seeking to destabilize his administration from within. To strengthen the party and fulfill its mandate, it is imperative that leaders focus on fostering an environment of inclusivity and shared purpose rather than resorting to backbiting and discord.
Kashim Shettima’s appointment as vice president should also be viewed through the lens of meritocracy rather than mere political allegiance. He emerged as a candidate uniquely equipped to contribute to national governance, possessing vital experience and a nuanced understanding of the socio-political challenges confronting Nigeria today. His investment in dialogue around security reform and economic recovery strategies underscores his dedication to not just the party but the nation at large.

There is an inherent risk in the proposed approach to leadership transitions within the APC. By promoting individuals based on perceived loyalty or personal connections rather than demonstrated competence, the party risks entrenching mediocrity. The nation’s challenges require leaders who can engage robustly with complex issues—leaders like Shettima, who understand the stakes and act decisively in the nation’s best interest.
The calls for Vice President Kashim Shettima’s replacement unveil a deeper societal malaise predicated on factionalism and opportunism rather than a genuine concern for effective governance. The refusal to appreciate the merits of stability, expertise, and continuous support for an experienced vice president diminishes the potential for collaborative success. It is essential for the APC and its leaders, including President Tinubu, to reject such divisive tactics and reaffirm their commitment to a cohesive governance structure. In doing so, they can build a stronger foundation for Nigeria’s future, one that is devoid of petty infighting and focused squarely on the needs of the Nigerian people. The quest for true leadership in Nigeria demands that unity, loyalty, and competence be prioritized over personal ambition and the politics of exclusion.
