Throughout the past decade, Hon. Muktari Betara Aliyu has made a significant mark in the National Assembly, captivating constituents with his commitment to public service and advocacy for social reform. In the unfolding calls on plans and preparations towards the 2027 general elections and political aspirations of people occupying positions and those trying to occupy one, names of people like Hon. Betara Aliyu keeps coming on two grounds. One, that he is being prepared to become the next Speaker of the house and two, that he is positioning himself for the governorship of Borno state. Whichever way as he contemplates an elevation in his title to H.E. (His Excellency), driven by aspirations from his supporters, it is imperative to analyze his contributions, impact, and the rationale behind this ambition. However, here I will be looking towards his perhaps ambition to lead Borno state in the next election where I hope that this piece will help him take decisions about his choices. While some critics argue that his governance experience may be limited, a closer examination reveals a leader who exemplifies pragmatic governance, particularly in improving healthcare access and economic opportunities for the underprivileged in Borno.

Betara’s journey into politics is emblematic of a dedication to serving the needs of his community. Over the years, he has championed several initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare access, which is crucial in a region characterized by socio-economic challenges and health disparities. In communities where healthcare facilities are few and far between and where financial barriers often prevent individuals from seeking medical attention, Betara has proactively sought to bridge these gaps. He has advocated for increased funding for primary healthcare services and worked collaboratively with local leaders to establish health outreach programs that provide essential medical services to underserved populations.

However, it is essential to challenge this perspective.

The argument that Betara’s limited governance experience could hinder his effectiveness as a leader overlooks the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature of contemporary governance. Modern challenges such as poverty, healthcare access, and economic instability require leaders who are adaptable, innovative, and attuned to public needs over those who merely possess conventional political experience. Betara’s pragmatic approach and results-oriented mindset align perfectly with the imperatives of today’s governance landscape.

Adding H.E. to his name especially on Borno soil, which he is an acknowledged son symbolizes an acknowledgment of his efforts and his capacity to effect change at a higher level—a potential benefit for both his constituency and the broader governance structure in Nigeria. In positioning himself as a candidate for greater influence under the APC umbrella in Borno, Betara must embrace the complexities of leadership while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical governance. His supporters envision a future where he not only advocates for better health and economic policies but also plays a pivotal role in shaping the broader narrative of governance in Nigeria.

While many believe in his capacity to transcend the traditional barriers that have historically marginalized minority tribes in Borno, others maintain that an “iron wall” exists between the governorship office and candidates from these minority groups, to which Hon. Muktari Betara Aliyu belongs.  However, it is essential to acknowledge the significant attributes that Hon. Betara brings to the table. He possesses not only a solid political background but also a deep understanding of the diverse needs of the people of Borno State. His experience as a legislator has equipped him with the requisite skills to navigate the murky waters of state politics. His political network extends beyond the borders of southern Borno, enhancing his visibility and appeal across various demographic groups. He has forged alliances with influential figures and other stakeholders who can bolster his campaign. His ability to engage with citizens and listen to their concerns positions him as a leader who is genuinely invested in public service. Hence, on the surface, there are substantial reasons to believe that Betara could indeed shatter the metaphorical jinx that has dogged previous minority candidates aspiring for the governorship office.

However, critics argue that despite these qualities, there exists a formidable barrier that Betara must confront: the deeply entrenched political traditions that favor dominant ethnic groups over minorities. The sociopolitical fabric of Borno has been woven together using threads of tribal allegiances, making it difficult for a candidate from a minority group to secure widespread acceptance. Historical precedence reveals a pattern where political power has largely been concentrated among the majority groups, often sidelining those from minority backgrounds. This scenario raises the question of whether Betara can overcome this longstanding bias against minority tribes.

The assertion that the deputy governorship position is the “birthright” of southern Borno’s people stems from a history of political marginalization. In this light, Betara may be perceived as aiming for what is deemed a more attainable role rather than risking an ambitious gubernatorial bid. While some individuals may argue that garnering support for the deputy governorship may be a pragmatic decision, it simultaneously underscores the limitations imposed on minority candidates within the state’s political hierarchy. The prevailing sentiment suggests that the governorship remains out of reach, effectively creating an iron wall that Betara would need to dismantle.

Another crucial aspect of this discourse is the role of public perception and voter sentiment. Political affiliations play a crucial role in shaping electoral strategies and determining candidates’ viability. If leaders from dominant ethnic groups decide to support Betara’s candidacy, it could lend him much-needed credibility and legitimacy—a move that may help dismantle the iron wall. Conversely, if the local and national political environments remain resistant to change, Betara might find himself fighting an uphill battle, as entrenched interests may prefer to maintain the status quo.

Despite the challenges outlined, it is essential to embrace optimism regarding the potential for change. In politics, faith can indeed move mountains. There are numerous examples worldwide of leaders who have risen to prominence against all odds, fueled by determination and an unwavering belief in their capacity to enact change. Thus, if Betara chooses to harness this spirit, there certainly exists hope for a transformative journey towards the governorship of Borno State. Until then, I will be looking into the standing position of our Distinguished Senator, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, in the lineup of four distinguished personalities the Borno social media platform names as the frontrunners for Governor Zulum’s seat in Maiduguri Government House come 2027.
