NDLEA seizes 13,125kgs of illicit drugs, arrests 793 suspects in FCT

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 13, 125 kilogrammes of drug substances and arrested 793 suspects in 2022.

The NDLEA Commander in the FCT, Mr Kabir Tsakuwa, said this on Tuesday in Abuja at a pre-event press briefing on grassroots sensitisation and awareness campaign on dangers of illicit drugs.

Tsakuwa said that the year 2022 was a fruitful year for the command, adding that records of arrests , seizures and convictions were impressive.

He said that the agency’s counselling and rehabilitation programmes also yielded positive results in the territory.

According to him, a total of 793 suspects comprising of 768 males and 29 females were arrested.

“13, 125 kilogrammes of different drug substances were seized. The breakdown of the seized drugs are12,660.3 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.

“Others includes 21.957 kilogrammes of cocaine, 0.008 kilogrammes of Heroine and 443.693 kilogrammes of different psychotropic substances, “he said.

The NDLEA boss said that the command also had 167 convictions comprised of 161 males and six females.

Tsakuwa said that 78 persons comprising of 74 males and four females with drug use problems were successfully counselled and rehabilitated within the same period.

He added that efforts were on towards better achievements in drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction in the year 2023.

Tsakuwa commended all stakeholders including other security agencies for their assistance in intelligence sharing, joint operations and prevention of drug abuse and trafficking in the society.

He also commended the traditional rulers in FCT saying that their past efforts were helpful and the agency remained appreciative.

“We must always remind ourselves that the drugs problem exists in every community and we need to address it at all levels.

“We therefore, implore you to sustain this robust engagement with a view of ridding our society of substance abuse and its attendant consequences, “he said.

NSCDC to Hand Over Viral Suspected Fraudster to Police, Odumosu Promises

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has said the fraudster in the viral video, Joseph Efe would be handed to the police for further investigations and prosecution.

The police has demanded in a statement on Thursday that the suspect should be handed to it as the crime he was alleged to have committed is parts of its mandate.

Addressing the press on Friday, the NSCDC FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu said the suspect would be handed over to the police to conclude the investigations and go ahead with the prosecution.

He noted that the 30 years old suspect, Joseph Efe, was arrested after coming out of an Abuja hotel premises allegedly to meet an accomplice, leaving his victim tied up in the hotel room.

He said the eagle eyed men of the NSCDC FCT Command who were at their sentry post, upon noticing Efe’s suspicious movement stopped him but instead of stopping, the suspect took to his heels after sighting the gallant officers who chased him, caught him and was led back to his hotel room, where the naked girl was found tied hands and legs with semitransparent adhesive tape (Cellotape).

The victim, Olivia Chukwuemeka, was immediately rescued from the situation where she has been stripped naked, bound, hands, feet and mouth.

While Parading the suspect, Odumosu said, the suspect confessed to being a yahoo boy and that he has not been collecting money from the act so he decided to hunt for young girls on a dating site called ‘coded runs’ and that he operates between Port Harcourt, Lagos, Benin and Abuja.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, is a serial fraudster(yahoo) and a thief, who specialises in luring ladies on dating sites into hotel rooms with the intent to robbing them of their phones and making withdrawal from his victims bank account.

He said investigation also revealed that the suspect arrived Abuja from Lagos on the 17th September, 2024 and lodged into an hotel adjacent old Federal Secretariat, Area1.

Odumosu said his first victim on arrival in Abuja was another lady he invited to his hotel room but could not succeed in his evil act because the lady was able to put up some resistance.

The noise attracted hotel staff at the said hotel, who came into his room. He succeeded in escaping from the scene due to poor handling of the situation by the hotel security.

Upon his escape from first hotel, he then proceeded to the next hotel where he checked in at about 2:30am of Wednesday, 18th September 2024.

He invited his latest victim who arrived at about 9am. He threatened her, putting fear in her and holding her by the throat, the frightened lady succumbed to her abductor, she was then stripped and bound

On checking the victim’s phone he discovered the lady had no money in her bank account, he then took the victim’s android phone and left the hotel room.

It was in the process of escaping from the hotel premises that his movement became suspicious, but in the process of trying to stop him, he took to his heels, he was chased and caught by NSCDC Operatives.

While addressing journalists, Odumosu said “let it be made abundantly clear that the video in circulation on this incident was not shot by the operatives of he NSCDC, we only became aware of its existence as it went viral on social media.

“Furthermore, as a Corps, we are duty bound and empowered to do due diligence before taking necessary steps towards prosecuting or handing over a suspect as the case may be to any relevant sister agency”.

After preliminary investigation, the suspect and the victim will be handed over to the relevant agency for any further necessary action.

The FCT Commandant helsman also warn all hotel owners to be more vigilant, and that they should do more to protect their guests and hotel facilities as well as ensuring their premises are not used as a place to perpetuate crime.

The Commandant who described the way the victim was tied by her abductor as inhuman cautioned all young ladies involved in ‘hook up’ to desist from such acts that will endanger their lives.

Meanwhile, the Command has also arrested a suspected vandal of armoured cables.

The suspect, Usman Ibrahim was arrested while vandalising armoured cables from a transformer in Nuclear Technology Centre, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission premises at Big Sheda Village in Kwali Area Council by men of the Anti- Vandal unit who were acting on a tip off.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect who is a notorious vandal earns a living from acts of vandalism along the Gwagwalada, Kwali axis and has a ready market in Agwan Dodo Bola at Gwagwalada Area Council.

The suspect has an accomplice, one Dan Abu who upon sighting men of NSCDC took to his heels. It was also discovered by men of NSCDC that not only was the transformer vandalised but the street lights around the transformer had also been vandalised.

According to Odumosu, investigation is still on going as more suspects will be arrested as facts unfold. After which the suspects will be charged to court.

Also the trio of Theophilus Oche “M” 27yrs, Okpokwu LGA, Benue State, Danladi Auwal “M” 25yrs, Bagwai LGA, Kano State and Ado Alqasim “M” 20yrs, Bichi LGA, Kano State were arrested at Big Sheda, Kwali Area Council.
The suspects were caught with vandalized air-conditioner and cables suspected to have been vandalized at Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Big Sheda.

They were nabbed by operatives of NSCDC FCT Command while on patrol at Big Sheda, they were apprehended with the vandalized materials being transported on a motorcycle.

Odumosu warned all criminals and miscreants to shun all acts of crime as the NSCDC, FCT Command will not relent in getting them arrested and making sure justice is served.

Violence Erupts at Ijaw Youth Council Election in Port Harcourt, Several Dead

What began as an election for the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) in Abulomma, Port Harcourt, took a deadly turn on 14 September 2024, leaving several people dead in its wake.

The election, which was held around 4:45 PM, descended into chaos after disagreements arose among the members, resulting in violent clashes.

The unrest escalated rapidly, leading to the death of one individual during the initial fracas, and the situation worsened with road blockades being erected by angry factions. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) intervened, restoring a semblance of order in the area.

However, tensions flared up again the following morning. At approximately 7:20 AM on 15 September 2024, additional bodies were discovered in Abulomma, heightening fears of further violence.

Reports indicate that a gunfight broke out during the IYC Eastern Zone election after several candidates refused to step down in favor of prominent figures, including EG Ateke and Asari Dokubo, who were also contesting for leadership positions. This led to violent clashes, resulting in further loss of life.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an Ibadan-based businesswoman, Mrs. Adewunmi Adebola and an auto parts dealer, Arinze Ora over attempts to export consignments of opioids and cocaine to London, United Kingdom and Congo Brazzaville respectively.

A statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi said officers of the anti-narcotics agency at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos had on Friday 6th September 2024 intercepted a cargo going to the United Kingdom, adding that a thorough search of the consignment revealed 924 bottles of codeine-based syrup weighing 135.7 kilogrammes and 5,250 tablets of rohypnol were hidden in cartons of foodstuffs.

Babafemi said the freight agent, Owojori Olanrewaju who presented the cargo for export was promptly arrested, with further investigation leading to the arrest of another suspect, Adewunmi Akeem , who claimed that his mother, 58-year-old Mrs. Adewunmi Adebola sent the consignment to him from Ibadan to deliver to the agent.

The spokesman said a follow up operation on Saturday 7th September led to the arrest of Mrs. Adewunmi in Ibadan where she deals in foodstuffs and cargo export.

In his statement, Owojori confessed that he has been working for Mrs. Adewunmi to export cargoes to the UK, adding that he was paid N2,411,000.00 for the job, while he was paid N2.1 million for a similar consignment handled for the businesswoman earlier.

In the same vein, NDLEA operatives at the same export shed of the Lagos airport last Wednesday intercepted some cartons of auto spare parts and powder custard going to Congo Brazzaville on Ethiopian Airlines. A diligent search of the cargo led to the discovery of 300 grammes of cocaine concealed in the containers of checkers powder custard packed together with some auto parts.

Babafemi said a follow up operation led to the arrest of the sender of the consignment, Arinze Ora, who deals in auto parts at the Trade Fair Auto Parts Wing, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.

Operatives of a Special Operations Unit of NDLEA last Tuesday arrested two brothers: Ikechukwu Ikeabba and Ugochukwu Ikeabba who are alleged sponsors of drug traffickers who specialise in exporting drugs by ingestion to Vietnam.

The NDLEA spokesman said their arrest followed diligent investigation of an earlier arrest of an Onitsha-based businessman, Ibeanusi Nosike, who excreted 68 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.282 kilogrammes after 12 days of excretion observation after he was arrested at the local wing of the Lagos airport by NDLEA operatives.

Babafemi said the 36-year-old Ibeanusi was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, 8th August 2024 at the old domestic terminal of the Lagos airport while attempting to board the first flight out of Lagos to Abuja where he was scheduled to join a Qatar Airways flight to Vietnam at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 10am same day.

He said another Vietnam-bound businessman, 54-year-old Paul Mbadugha had been arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Abuja airport on Monday 12th August 2024 during the outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight QR 1432 to Hanoi, Vietnam via Doha after he tested positive to ingestion of cocaine. He noted that after four days under observation, Mbadugha egested a total of 88 wraps of the illicit drug with a gross weight of 1.71 kilogrammes.

He said at the time of the arrest of the two kingpins, the Ikeabba brothers, they were caught with 87 wraps of cocaine dummies used in training intending mules.

Babafemi said in Gombe state, NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence last Saturday arrested three suspects: Auwal Abdullahi, Isah Rabiu and Abubakar Da’u along Bauchi-Gombe road while travelling in a DAF truck marked GME 552 ZU. A search of the vehicle led to the seizure 2,490,000 pills of tramadol concealed with bags of salt.

He said a suspect, Idris Adamu, 23, was arrested with 41.5 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa at Kachia town, Kaduna state last Tuesday while two suspects: Godiya Jikuk, 36, and Yusuf Umaru, 65, were nabbed at Isinbode -Ekiti, Ekiti state with a total of 73.6 kilogrammes cannabis last Wednesday.

In Bauchi state, no fewer than 208,920 pills of tramadol and diazepam were seized from a suspect, Chinedu Asadu, 35, last Thursday while 104 kilogrammes of cannabis was recovered from two suspects: Abba Abdullahi and Mustapha Yahaya along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway last Tuesday by operatives in Lagos state.

He added that not less than 350,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup were discovered by NDLEA operatives in two containers shipped from India during a joint examination of the containers with men of Customs Service and other security agencies at the Tincan port in Lagos last Tuesday, starting that the containers were part of those targeted by NDLEA for 100 percent examination.

Babafemi said with the same vigour, commands and formations of the agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week.

While commending the officers and men of the Special Operations Unit, MMIA, Tincan, Lagos, Gombe, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Ekiti commands of the agency for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated that their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country are well appreciated.

He however urged them to continue to intensify ongoing drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.
