Cabinet Reshuffle: ActionAid Nigeria Says Tinubu Should Have Increase Female Ministers

ActionAid Nigeria has decried the non increment in ministerial slot to women after the newly announced cabinet reshuffling by President Bola Tinubu.
The Country Director, ActionAid Nigeria, Andrew Mamedu, in a statement on Thursday said the organisation “acknowledges the recent cabinet reshuffling, along with the disbandment and merging of some Ministries, as an effort towards recalibrating governance. While restructuring is within the President’s prerogative, this moment demands that government agendas are decisively aligned with the needs of citizens, with a focus on inclusivity, cost-efficiency, and competent service delivery.
“The ousting of three female portfolio Ministers and appointment of seven new portfolio Ministers, three of which are women, raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to advancing gender equality, youth engagement, social development and the fulfillment of the 35% Affirmative Action benchmark. In a country with an already low representation of women in both elective and appointed positions, this was a crucial opportunity for the government to advance gender parity.
“Appointing more women would have signaled a decisive step toward closing this persistent gap. Instead, this move reinforces systemic exclusion and undermines years of advocacy for gender inclusion.”
He added that: “The decision to replace underperforming Ministers highlights the President’s intention to ensure accountability, improve delivery and address the current situation in the country. However, it also raises critical questions about the original appointments: Why did these officials fail to deliver? What lessons have been learned about the pitfalls of appointing political cronies at the expense of governance? We urge the administration to ensure thorough capacity-building for the new ministers and to take decisive action to prevent a repeat of previous shortcomings. Investigating the root causes of the failures is essential to avoid the same governance lapses.”
He further said: “As this cabinet grows to become the largest since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, concerns about the rising cost of governance become even more pressing. Although some Ministries were merged or disbanded, the net effect has been an increase in the number of Ministers.
“We call on all newly appointed Ministers to resist the temptation to introduce new personal agendas that deviate from the mandates of their Ministries. Governance should be focused and aligned with public needs, particularly in critical areas such as poverty reduction, social protection, and humanitarian support. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction must act swiftly to revive key initiatives, such as the school feeding program and the national social register, to address the urgent needs of vulnerable populations.
ActionAid Nigeria urges the President to ensure that ministers follow the existing frameworks and strategic objectives of their Ministries. Policies and programmes must be people-centered, reflecting the current socio-economic realities of the nation.”
He said: “Citizens expect a government that prioritizes their well-being and delivers results efficiently and transparently.
In these challenging times, it is essential that governance reflects the principles of equity, accountability, and fiscal responsibility. We remain committed to holding leaders accountable to these standards and advocating for a government that works for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

Governor Buni presents C of O to NEPZA

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has presented a certificate of occupancy and right of occupancy of 300 hectares of land to the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Agency (NEPZA) to support its activities in the state.
Presenting the certificates to the Executive Director of Trade and Investment of the Agency, Alhaji Usman Bakori, Governor Buni urged the agency to use the land effectively and efficiently.
“You should ensure efficient and speedy use of the land to enhance development.
“The government deliberately allocated the land to the agency close to the Cargo Airport to stimulate trade and business activities in the state, he said.
Governor has a great role to play in promoting the export of agricultural produce, including sesame seeds, gum arabic, livestock, and other crops that are produced in great commercial quantities in the state.
“We look forward to seeing your presence and performance soon in the state, Buni said.
The Executive Director of the Agency, Alhaji Usman Bakori, commended Governor Buni for allocating the land to the agency.
“We deeply appreciate this gesture and wish to ensure you that development on the land will soon commence.
“The certificates have equipped us to hasten development on the land, Bakori assured.

Assembly Commission: Buni reappoints Chairman, three members

The Executive, Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has approved the reappointment of the Chairman and three permanent members of the Assembly Service Commission for a second and final term of four years, effective October 6, 2024.
In a press statement issued and signed by Alhaji Shuaibu Abdullahi, Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, which was made available to newsmen in Damaturu.
The statement further said the reappointed members are Chairman Mohammed Nur Alkali, and permanent members are Barr. Aliyu Shehu Abubakar, Hon. Malanta Haruna Barau, and Hajiya Hajara Lawan.
His Excellency also approved the appointment of two additional new permanent members of the commission for a first term of four years, effective immediately.
The new permanent members are Hon. Barr. Musa Hamidu Gagure and Alhaji Yahaya Ado, respectively.

UN Restates Commitment to Nigeria’s Achieving SDGs

The United Nations systems in Nigeria has restated continued commitment to support Nigeria achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria Mohammed Fall disclosed this at a press conference to mark the UN Day, in Abuja
Fall who also said that for UN to achieve SDGs, Nigeria must first achieve it, said:
“For us, Nigeria is a very important country. As we always say, we cannot achieve the SDG if Nigeria doesn’t make it. Less than five years we have now to achieve the Agenda 2030.”
He added that the Summit of the Future and its landmark outcome, have highlighted five strategic priorities: SDG financing for development, international peace and security, science, technology and innovation, youth and future generation and global governance.
Fall said: “The Nigeria we want is reflected in the pact. At the UN, our focus is to ensure that Nigeria achieves the SDG. This is why we work closely with the government at all levels. We work with all the development partners, we work with civil society to put the SDG on track in Nigeria.”

According to him, humanitarian assistance alone can’t solve people’s problems, but a combinations of bitga.
Fall while noting that UN is interested in the wellbeing of Nigeria, noted that are intervention by the world body in every part of the country.
He argued that concentration is based on needs and that it is a misconception to believe that the Northeast was given bigger priority.
