A PRESIDENTIAL PARDON: Celebration Of Corruption, The Pulse Of The Plateau.

In society events are meant to be celebrated but recently on the Jos Plateau the story was of shame.   What happened of late in our political history caused by this administration was a celebration of corruption in Nigeria and this has brought a lot of mixed reactions from the people of Jos. This is because the presidential pardon given to the former governor did not go well with many people in the state; some are of the view that corruption is being celebrated.

Accordingly, presidential pardon is a prerogative or an act of discretion to correct perceived injustice, wrongful punishment or judicial injustice. But on the contrary, this case does not deserve a pardon. Most times, the President or governors in power seeking political patronage may exercise the power of pardon without restraint resulting in abuse.

Therefore, it is not strange that so much outrage has occurred following the announcement that presidential pardon has been granted to the former governor of Plateau State Senator Joshua Chibi Dariye and others, who were convicted of corruption with evidence beyond reasonable doubt.

A resident of Tudun Wada in Jos said  “I have lost hope in the judicial system of Nigeria, because  in most cases the guilty are set free while the innocent are and the less privileged are left to rot in prison”  unless otherwise, pardon should be given to citizens who deserved it than celebrating corrupt individuals.
