Alau Dam Overflow: Zulum sends a delegation to assess the impact

… Maiduguri is safe, Borno SSG assures

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has sent a high-powered delegation to assess the impact of water overflow at Alau Dam which is threatening Maiduguri Metropolis and its environs.

Alau Dam which has a reservoir capacity of 112 million cubic meters was designed to support irrigation activities on the Alau river bank that is now used to supply tap water in Maiduguri and Jere LGA.

Alhaji Bukar Tijani, the Secretary to Borno State Government, led the delegation. They were received by Engr Mohammed Zannah, the acting Managing Director of Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) at Alau Dam on Thursday.

The delegation comprises Engr Baba Bukar Gujibawu, SA to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation, Engr Adam Bababe, Executive Secretary, Borno Geographic Information Service, Engr Sadu Auno, Executive Secretary, Borno State Road Maintenance Agency and the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Saidu Barkindo.

Briefing the SSG, Engr Zannah disclosed that despite the high water level in the river which led to overflow, the present conditions do not pose a severe threat to the city, noting that all necessary measures were put in place to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani who went around to assess the Alau Dam on Thursday assured residents that the Dam is not broken.

The SSG added that the state government is working with the Chad Basin Development Authority to take steps to protect Maiduguriri from flooding.

He said, “There have been a lot of worries as well as speculations that the whole Dam has broken down, but the dam has not broken down.”

“We have been to Alau Dam on behalf of His Excellency, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, Executive Governor of Borno State.”

“Borno State Government is partnering very strongly with the managers of Alau Dam. We have discussed and seen what to do, but the rumour of Maiduguri being flooded is not
there”, he also said.

Two Suspected Kidnappers Arrested in Lere LGA, Kauru

Security operatives in Lere LGA have successfully apprehended two suspected bandits following a tip-off from local hunters.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspects, identified as Sani Liman, 23, of Unguwan Fa Raminkura, and Murtala Magaji, alias Seto, 25, of Dambata Galadimawa Village in Kauru LGA, were arrested on April 15, 2025, at approximately 1330hrs.

The sources said Police personnel from Saminaka acted swiftly and arrested the suspects

Preliminary investigation has indicated that the two men may be linked to recent kidnapping activities in the region.

Police sources said that they are currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

Terrorists suspected to be affiliated with ISWAP detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Mandafuma Bridge, located along the Biu-Damboa road, at approximately 2:20 AM on Tuesday.

The explosion completely destroyed the bridge, severing the link between Mandafuma Village and Biu Town.

This act of terrorism was aimed at disrupting movement along the route, impeding access for both motorists and passengers. It also serves to hinder military reinforcements traveling through the area.

Nine Killed in Otukpo Attack, Manhunt for Suspects Underway

No fewer than nine persons have been confirmed dead following an attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Otobi District of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident, which occurred at about 1900hrs on Monday, was reportedly carried out by about 40 armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, who invaded the community and opened fire on residents.

The sources disclosed that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack and were evacuated to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo for treatment.

Security forces have commenced a manhunt for the assailants, with bush combing operations ongoing in nearby areas to track down the perpetrators and prevent further violence.
