Assembly Commends Buni, Moves to harmonize revenue law in Yobe

The Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Ahmed Mirwa said good governance is about conducting public affairs in an open, transparent, responsive, accountable, efficient and effective manner to create a stable business environment that will improve people’s lives and increase public confidence.
Mirwa stated this at a Public Hearing on a Bill for a Law to provide for the Harmonisation, Consolidation and Codification of all Revenue Laws and Restructuring the Internal Revenue Service and for other Matters Related thereto Law 2021 held in the House Conference Room.
He said the essence of revenue generation is to advance the welfare of citizens of a state with a focus on promoting economic growth and development through the provision of development activities
Mirwa said the House received the bill to harmonize, consolidate and codify all revenue laws of the state to allow some changes that may increase the revenue drive because of the dwindling economy in the country.

In his speech, the Chairman House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Ciroma Buba Mashio said the inability of States and Local Governments to generate enough revenue to cope with their expenditure responsibility has been a serious challenge.
He noted that the bill under consideration has 13 parts and 124 sections, adding that the bill is aimed at harmonizing all existing revenue related laws in the state to ensure probity, accountability and transparency in revenue generation.
Buba Mashio revealed that the increasing cost of running government coupled with the dwindling oil revenue has left many states in the country with the need to evolve strategies to improve their Internal Generated Revenue.
