ASSISTING THE NEEDY: EFFORTS OF THE BORNO STATE NUJ LEADERSHIP

By: David Balami

That the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State has embarked on seeking assistance in aid of the needy in the state is no doubt one of the best end of year developments.

Recent reports indicate how the present Borno State Chairman of the NUJ Bulama Talba and his team are securing assistance in forms of shelter, food e.t.c to the less privileged in our society. A report he has just posted, indicates an ongoing construction of a two bedroom apartment by the Borno State Government for Ya Kolo an elderly woman who lives in a shanty shelter.

For sure, the timely gesture by the NUJ leadership has all it takes to be appreciated as it is drawing the attention of a lot of concerned citizens and governments  and to me, as former chairman of the NUJ in Borno 1982-1984, I regard it as a history being written as nobody has ever contemplate  such an excellent idea.

A time like this calls on all organizations and associations to brace up in aid of the government’s efforts at alleviating the sufferings of the thousands of displaced persons we have been living with all these years.

Our elected Representatives must see the NUJ chairman’s effort as a challenge to them to toe a similar line and emulate him instead of waiting for election period to come to the village with maggi cubes, salt and sugar to canvas for votes.

And so, bravo NUJ, let this gesture be the beginning as the people would like to hear more of such assistance to the down-trodden.
