AWARDS: PROFESSOR YUSUF DANKOFA’S REPLY, A FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By: Balami Lazarus

When I read the reply of Professor Yusuf Dankofa a law Professor and Dean Faculty of Law Ahmadu Bello University Zaria that went viral lately. I kept wandering on the reality of awards conferment to individuals by organisations and institutions.

I tried to wave that thought aside but it kept popping up on me and I decided to comment briefly. However, it is not in my character to comment in writing on issues or matters– arising, but this has been my position on awards. Therefore, I would not like to go through the account of Professor Yusuf believing so many of us might have read it.

My concern is the subject matter – the theme(s). Awards should be conferring on those that have meaningfully and truly contributed to society through their organisations, establishments, institutions or at the local level. Such men and women are never recognised because of their social status in society or position at place of work. But whether we like it or not; they are part of the success of their organisation and community.

Mr. Shakabula the head of the unnamed organisation was queried with all sense of reasoning by the intended awardee why he should be conferring with the so- called meritorious achievement award?

For me, the lesson here is that individuals should try to subject awards intended to be given to them. Do I really merit this award? Why me? Professor Yusuf Dankofa will be remembered in the annals of history of awards in Nigeria if present becomes the past.
