Bandits have continued to ravage villages in Zamfara state despite claims of degrading them by Nigeria’s security operatives in the northwest operations recently.

A report emerging from the state revealed that 33 women were abducted in a raid by bandits who stormed 15 villages and carried out what the villagers described as a successful operation as they operated unhindered for several hours.

This development was also confirmed to newsmen on Monday by some locals in Zamfara State, who also claimed that properties worth millions of naira were carted away by the gunmen who left unchallenged.

The affected 15 villages were said to be close to Gusau, the state capital, a situation which left the villagers wondering as to how bandits can now operate close to the state capital and succeed in the way they did.

“We can no longer understand the situation. Our women were taken, our properties taken and there is no sign of recovery but their usual rhetoric from government and security operatives.” A local who identify himself as Aminu Isa told newsmen in Zamfara

Some locals in Geba and Gidan Kaura villages and others in communities within the Gusau Local Government Area also confirmed the attacks.

According to them, the bandits abducted women and girls and there is no story yet about them nor a hint about their whereabouts since the incident last week.

“The bandits abducted 10 women in Kura. At Bayauri they abducted 9 women. They also entered a village called Gana and took another 7 women before proceeding to Duma and abducted another set of 7. This puts the number of abduction to 33 women. These happened on the night of Saturday and they operated until Sunday morning.” The locals revealed

It was reported that following the incident, many villages have been deserted as the villagers flee to the state capital.

“We have women, children and the pregnant ones currently taking refuge in the city and there is no food. If you see where they are sleeping you will understand the magnitude of the crises here. They are staying and sleeping in the cold, as if there is no government in the state” Hamid Abubakar a resident of Gusau said

The state Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Dosara, who also confirmed the attack said the incident happened in Geba.

According to Ibrahim Darasa, “There are soldiers currently working in that area. When the Soldiers arrived at Geba, they met three injured people.  The soldiers dispersed the bandits and are working with other security agencies to ensure law and order in the area.”
