Bauchi Polytechnic Students Protest ASUP’s 14-Day Warning Strike

Students of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, on Tuesday, staged a protest against the two weeks warning strike embarked upon by the management of the institution in compliance with a directive by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Academic and Non-Academic Unions.

Recall that the JAC had directed its members to embark on the warning strike which according to the Committee was necessited by the failure of the Bauchi state Government to honour their demands after a series of warnings.

A letter issued by the Chairman of the Committee, Abdulkadir Mohammed ordered that the industrial action should commence on 19th July, to 30th July 2022.

However, the protest which started peacefully degenerated into violence which prompted the police to deploy personnel to curtail any possible breach of peace.

Some of the aggrieved Students told newsmen that the JAC’s action was condemnable amidst their Second /fourth Semester Examination, explaining that some of them have since commenced their Examination.

The students burned tyres at the front gate of the institution along Bauchi/Jos road.

The incident created barricades on Wuntin Dada, Jos Road Bauchi which prevented motorists from passing.

Reacting to the development, the Bauchi state Police command which condemned the incident, said the investigation has since commenced on the matter.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Umar Mamman Sanda who made the condemnation in a press release signed by the Command’s PPRO, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil warned that no form of violent demonstration or unlawful public gathering would be tolerated.

The PPRO who said that protesters took a toll on the Jos-Bauchi highway, attracted some miscreants and hoodlums who made it degenerate into a violent demonstration.

He said that the miscreants and hoodlums-infested protesters resorted to burning tyres, smashing peoples’ vehicles, damaging properties, extortion of mobile phones and looting some shops situated opposite the school.
