Boko Haram: Shehu of Borno advises on wider consultation over terrorist surrender

The Shehu of Borno Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Ibn Umar Umar Garbai El- Kanemi, CFR on Thursday advised that Government should appoint High Powered Committee of Elders, the Military, religious and political leaders, academicians and scholars for wider consultations, enlightenment and publicity towards the acceptance of Boko Haram members who laid down their arms for peace to rein while restoring the confidence of those offended in the course of the insurgency.

Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Ibn Umar Umar Garbai El- Kanemi stated this while moderating on the various comments and opinions during a meeting in the Shehu’s Palace where consultations were held with Council members and all District Heads in the Emirate in which varied comments and opinions were expressed on the fate of the repented Boko Haram militants.

A statement from the Secretary, Borno Emirate Council, Zannah Laisu Kazalma said “the whole the meeting commended the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army for the good initiative towards the restoration of peace in Borno State and the North East generally.”

It could be recalled that the Borno Emirate Council recently has been on social media with reports circulating with regards to the acceptance of repented Boko Haram members for their re-integration into the community in Borno State under the OPERATION SAFE CORRIDOR.

The statement further said that during the meeting, each member of the committee was given the opportunity to respond on the subject and after a careful discussion from those present, the Royal father advised on wider consultation to be held to understand to the situation in the hope of bringing lasting peace to Borno and all parts of Nigeria.
