Borno lauds FG over training of agroforest agents

The Borno State government has applauded the Federal Government following the training of Agroforest agents to curb desert encroachment and deforestation which may worsen climate change.

Borno State Agricultural Development Programmes, Darman Mohammed disclosed this during a two-day training organised by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Extension Department for 15 extension agents and farmers drawn from the Borno state Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) and FMARD Maiduguri office.
The two-day training was aimed at sensitization and training of extension workers on “strengthening recovery and resilience from climate disaster- flooding.
He said farmers are strongly advised to combine crops, and forest plants or animals simultaneously, saying this would fight against desert encroachment.

This training will enhance and curb desert encroachment and it would improve food security. We sincerely thank FMARD for this training and it is timely.
“The impact of flooding and desert encroachment was so severe on our farmers this year, so we want to bring back the culture of planting trees along with crops together, which is the sole aim of this training.
The resource persons led by Sanusi Nadada delivered technical papers on” strengthening recovery and resilience from climate disaster- flooding” he stressed the importance of adopting an agroforest approach to mitigate climate change.
In his remarks, Bukar Musa, State Director Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said there is a dire need for an aggressive Agroforestry extension to convince farmers to adopt this farming system.
He that 80 per cent of the population makes a living from farming, fishing and livestock production. Many people have lost their livelihoods following increasing aridity caused by climate change, with scores of others becoming vulnerable to desert encroachment.
