The Borno State Government has launched the 2025 Tree Planting Campaign themed “Forest and Food” to combat climate change, tackle desertification, and promote livelihoods.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur, stressed that tree planting is not just environmental protection but also economic empowerment, creating opportunities in agro-forestry, wood processing, and green enterprises.

The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Mohammed Habib, noted progress in reducing tree felling due to sanctions, and announced the distribution of over 10,000 gas cylinders as alternatives to firewood. The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) unveiled a 5-year plan (2025–2029) to plant 50 million date palm seedlings across 11 frontline states.

Ambassador Usman Aliyu, DG of BSAGGW, emphasized the urgency of addressing desertification and flooding, pledging community-driven monitoring, irrigation farming, and youth/women engagement to ensure sustainability.

The event featured symbolic tree planting, drama presentations, and was attended by traditional leaders, lawmakers, security chiefs, government officials, civil society, and NGOs.
