El-kanemi Islamic College student slits colleague throat in Maiduguri

Jubrin, eleven (11) year-old, son of the late Kano state  High Court Judge, Sadi Mato was reportedly attacked by a senior student at the El-kanemi College of Islamic Theology in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital in northeast Nigeria.

The child who is currently at the intensive care unit of the University of Maiduguri had his throat slit by the senior student (whose name was not given by the school authority) for refusing to run an errand for him.

Some Parents of students and residents who expressed displeasure over how the school authority were said to hand the situation by trying to keep the incident secret and shielding the culprit said there is need to for government to look into the doing of management at the school as this incident shows that there are a lot that is being kept away from parents and the society about happenings in the school.

Our Correspondent learnt that, after Jubrin’s father died, his mother remarried in Yobe state and took him with her. The new family then enrolled him at the El-kanemi College of Islamic Theology where they hope that he will study and earn both Western and Islamic education.

A resident of Bullumkuttu Abuja whose son was also in the College described the incident as unfortunate, adding that it is unthinkable that such could occur in an environment where the students are supposed to be learning how to be their brother’s keeper.

“The student who perpetrated the act of throat slitting is in  SS2 class. We were told that he asked Jubril to go for an errand for him. But Jubrin refused to go. To punish him, he came for him in the night and took him to a quiet place where in the process used a razor blade to cut his neck severely injuring his veins.” Malam Umar Adam a resident of Bullumkuttu Abuja said.

It was learnt that, when he (the culprit) saw blood flowing he fled the place leaving the young boy to die. 

“Jubrin was said to have struggled with his clothes soaked in blood to safety and some students helped to take him to the Principal’s Office where a call was put to the Principal and some of the staff who arrived at the office and met little Jubrin already down and unconscious.

” They picked him and rushed him to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where he has been since the incident on January 16, 2022. They keep mum over the situation until things begin to unfold now. ” A source from the school revealed.

Asked if Jubrin’s parents were informed,  Our source said they were informed the following day after the school had done the process of admission. Adding that he was, however, not privy to what transpired between the school management and parents of Jubrin.

According to him, Culprit, who was said to be indoctrinated on psychotropic substances was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for further investigations.

Attempts by Our Correspondent to get the Principal of the school to speak could not yield result as he was said to be not available for comments on the matter.
