EMBER MONTHS AND THE NIGERIAN PSYCHIC

The ember months have been psychologically imprinted in the minds of most Nigerians as dreaded months of crimes, danger, fear and rush. Therefore, it has been factored in the psyche of some of us. And it has come to live and stay in our faculty of reasoning creating a negative impact on our thinking and we are now scared of these natural beautiful months.
What an illusion? For me, there is absolutely nothing like ember months in the Georgian calendar of twelve months and I have never ever seen a month(s) named and called ember rather than March, May, July, September,November and the rest that make a full year.
Historically, do you know that some of the months are named after some Roman gods and their pagan festivities including some of their emperors. For the Valentine celebration in February is one of Roman gagan celebrations called Luperculia. If you don’t know now you have known.

The announcement of these so- called months came into play and limelight in the 80’s with the emergence of pentecostal churches and their pastors who came with this mirage icing it with religious interpretation; scaring their members and those that believe such things.
Another phase to this scary abstract noun came up with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) who in their lack of wisdom keyed into and popularized and intensified the non- existence of the months in the road safety programmes painting it as dangerous months.
How? What is ember by the way? One may be tempted to ask. Good question. Ember simply means a piece of burning or glowing coal or wood in a dying fire. Does that mean or symbolise danger or fear? Well some have come to accept and believe in this nonsense without questioning.
