His Royal Highness, the Emir of Fika and Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Dr. Muhammad Ibn Abali Muhammad Idrisa CON, CFR, has called on community leaders, elders, youth, and all stakeholders to join hands to unite in our commitment to fostering development, preserving our heritage, and empowering one another.
The royal father made the call at the unveiling of the potentials of Kukar-Gadu, the launching of the history of Kukar-Gadu, the presentation of the Kukar-Gadu physical development plan, and the commission of the Kukar-Gadu Empowerment Development Initiative at Kukar-Gadu town in Yobe state.
He said, “Let us first reflect on the profound heritage that Kukar-Gadu stlands for. Our history is steeped in resilience, courage, and a spirit of unity that transcends generations.” Adding that, the history of the Kukar-Gadu book is a testament to our past, a chronicle that honors our ancestors, celebrates our tradition, and preserves the narratives that define our identity.
Dr. Abali maintains that the Kukar-Gadu physical development plan is a visionary blueprint designed to guide our growth, improve our infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for our commitment to sustainable development that is inclusive, strategic, and responsive to the needs of our community.
“It is essential that we work collaboratively to implement this plan, fostering partnerships among government entities, private stakeholders, and community members. Noted that, in doing so, we can transform our vision into reality. May this development plan serve as a catalyst for positive change, sparking economic growth and social progress.” The Royal Father said.
The Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers further revealed that the commissioning of the Kukar-Gadu Empowerment Development Initiative aims to equip our youth and women with the skills and resources they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
“As leaders, it is our duty to invest in our greatest asset—our people—and through this initiative, we will create a framework for economic sustainability, providing the tools necessary for individuals to succeed and strengthening our community as a whole. Together we seek to build a future that is prosperous and full of possibilities.

Okpo Student Killing: Family Rejects Settlement, Demands Arrest as Police, DSS Launch Full Investigation
Okpo Student Killing: Family Rejects Settlement, Demands Arrest as Police, DSS Launch Full Investigation
By: Michael Mike
Abuja, May 3, 2026 — Authorities have intensified investigations into the killing of a nursing student in Okpo, Kogi State, as the bereaved family of Andrew Amehson firmly rejected any form of settlement and insisted on justice, declaring “no justice, no burial.”
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) have now taken over the case, following mounting public outrage and pressure from community groups over the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Andrew Amehson, a student of Grimad Nursing School in Anyigba, was allegedly beaten to death on April 28, 2026, by security personnel at Nana College of Nursing Sciences, Ibana in Okpo—an incident that has sparked protests and calls for accountability across Olamaboro Local Government Area.
Authorities Move In
Confirming the development, the Chairman of Olamaboro Local Government disclosed that the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced a full-scale probe in Okpo.
According to him, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello, has been briefed, while the state government’s Security Adviser, Commander Duro Jerry Omodara (rtd), is also actively involved.
“The homicide department is already on ground in Okpo. I have spoken with the Divisional Police Officer and relevant security authorities. We are committed to ensuring justice is served,” the chairman said.
He further revealed that the proprietor of Nana College of Nursing Sciences, who is currently hospitalised, has agreed to present himself for questioning once discharged.
While urging calm, the chairman commended the family for their restraint and peaceful conduct despite the provocation, assuring them that the government would not shield anyone found culpable.
“We Want Justice, Not Money” — Family
The victim’s family, however, remains resolute in its demand for justice, rejecting any form of financial inducement or backdoor settlement.
Speaking during a visit by youths who had earlier held a candlelight procession in honour of the deceased, Andrew’s elder brother, Solomon Aziko, stated that the family’s position is non-negotiable.
“We are not begging anyone. We are not hungry. Nobody will intimidate us with money. All we want is justice. Those who killed my brother must be arrested and face the full weight of the law,” he said.
He also dismissed claims that representatives of the school had reached out to the family, clarifying that a lawyer who visited was a personal acquaintance and not acting on behalf of the institution.
“Our stand is clear: no justice, no burial. If they cannot arrest those responsible, they should return the body to the school,” he added.
The victim’s mother, visibly distraught, echoed the demand, insisting that burial rites would not proceed until justice is achieved.
“Let them find those who killed my son. That is all I want. If they fail to do that, there will be no burial,” she said.
Andrew’s sister, Wisdom Aziko, also reaffirmed the family’s stance, stressing that prosecution must begin before any funeral arrangements are considered.
Student Body Issues Ultimatum
Meanwhile, the National Association of Olamaboro Students (NAOS) has escalated pressure on authorities, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum demanding “visible and concrete action.”
In a statement, the association warned that failure to act before 11:59 PM on May 3, 2026, would trigger lawful protests across the area.
The group condemned the killing as a “gruesome act of brutality” and called for immediate arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved.
Growing Public Concern
The incident has fueled broader concerns about the use of excessive force by private security personnel in educational institutions, as well as the lack of oversight and accountability mechanisms.
As of press time, the Kogi State Police Command had yet to release an official statement. However, security sources confirmed that detectives and DSS operatives are actively pursuing leads, with multiple persons expected to be invited for questioning.
With tensions rising and public scrutiny intensifying, attention is now firmly on law enforcement authorities to deliver swift and transparent justice in a case that has come to symbolise the growing demand for accountability in Nigeria’s institutions.

Nigeria Summons South Africa Envoy Over Renewed Anti-Foreigner Protests, Attacks on Nigerians
Nigeria Summons South Africa Envoy Over Renewed Anti-Foreigner Protests, Attacks on Nigerians
By: Michael Mike
The Federal Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following mounting concerns over a fresh wave of anti-foreigner protests and reported attacks targeting Nigerian citizens and their businesses.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the envoy is expected at its headquarters in Abuja on Monday, May 4, 2026, where Nigerian authorities will formally register their strong displeasure over developments seen as threatening the long-standing diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
At the heart of the meeting are recent demonstrations by various groups in South Africa, which have reportedly degenerated into harassment, violence, and destruction of foreign-owned businesses—many belonging to Nigerians. The incidents have triggered widespread anger among Nigerians, amid fears for the safety of thousands living and working in South Africa.
Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa on Saturday said the government is deeply worried about the implications of the unrest on bilateral relations, stressing that Nigeria remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad while pursuing diplomatic solutions.
Despite the rising tension, the Federal Government urged Nigerians to remain calm, assuring that steps are being taken at the highest diplomatic levels to address the situation and ensure the safety and dignity of its nationals.
Nigeria and South Africa share one of Africa’s most strategic bilateral relationships, rooted in a history of solidarity dating back to Nigeria’s support for the anti-apartheid struggle. However, relations have repeatedly come under strain due to recurring outbreaks of xenophobic violence in South Africa.
Notably, major incidents in 2008, 2015, and 2019 saw widespread attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, leading to deaths, looting, and destruction of properties. The 2019 crisis, in particular, sparked a diplomatic row, with Nigeria recalling its High Commissioner and boycotting the World Economic Forum on Africa 2019 in protest.
In response to past crises, both countries established diplomatic mechanisms, including an early warning system and joint consular forums, aimed at preventing further violence and protecting citizens. Despite these measures, sporadic tensions and anti-immigrant sentiments have persisted, often fueled by local grievances over unemployment and crime.
Analysts warned that the current developments, if not swiftly contained, could once again test diplomatic ties between Africa’s two largest economies and undermine regional integration efforts under frameworks such as the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The outcome of Monday’s meeting is therefore seen as crucial in determining whether both nations can de-escalate tensions and reaffirm their commitment to mutual respect, cooperation, and the protection of citizens on both sides.
