EU launches YSB for effective youth policy in Nigeria

The European Union (EU) on Monday launched 25 Youth Sounding Board (YSB) to allow Nigerian young people to have an influence on the policy and programmes of the EU in the country.

Speaking during the constitution of the board in Abuja, the Charge d’Affaires at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS

Mr. Alexandre Borges Gomes, said constituting the board will making EU action more participatory, relevant and effective for the large young population in Nigeria.

He explained that 60 percent of the Nigerian population is below the age of 25 years, therefore, youth in the country are a huge driver for change and innovation.

He said: “The EU, therefore, believes that the future of Nigeria will largely depend on the ability to provide young Nigerians with opportunities for employment, education, health and access to decision-making processes and this is precisely what we are trying to do here. 

“We will provide Nigerian youths access to decision making.” 

Gomes said, in the ongoing youths EU Programmes, youth are already engaged in different subjects ranging from peace and security, to vocational training, and eradication of gender-based violence. A key lesson learnt in these engagements, is that lasting change and innovation lies with youth. 

He noted that members of the board were selected out of hundreds of applications of young and motivated Nigerians from across the country.

“Specifically, you were selected based on your knowledge and experience in one or more of the areas that are of key interest to the EU, including gender equality, youth inclusion, climate change, and culture,” he said.

Gomes said the 25 youths had proven track record of playing outstanding roles in their communities, both online and or offline, and had setup and participated in creative and innovative initiatives to empower youth at the grassroots level.

He praised the Nigerian government for its youth-oriented initiatives, and said the EU would work with the government in the areas of policy-making.

The EU helmsman said: “We are pleased with the participation of the Nigerian government today. With their support, we hope the YSB will play a critical role as bridge builders between the youth population and government by influencing policies and legislation towards ensuring that local needs are not missed out within the national conversation.”

The Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Mr Sunday Dare, who spoke at the event, thanked the EU for the YSB initiative and the roles it play as partner to Nigeria in various spare of youth empowerment and development. 

He also advised the EU and other countries that are active in supporting youth development to adopt an agenda for action, and carry the ministry along so as to avail them access to data that will be useful in the project.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ms. Abimbola Abileoye said young people have the capacity to contribute meaningfully while participating in nation building, noting that the YSB presents an opportunity for the less represented in decision-making and policy formulation processes to help solve global challenges.

“The Youth Sounding Board presents an opportunity to fully represent young people and their interest to help build the EU system from a youth perspective.

Being a member of the Youth Sounding Board is an opportunity to represent vulnerable people, and to influence policies and actions that are impactful,” Abileoye said.

ISWAP Terrorists Kill Hunters’ Leader in Borno

Suspected ISWAP terrorists have killed the chairman of the hunters’ group in Garjang village, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 5 a.m. on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Habu Dala, 53, was abducted from his home by the terrorists, who took him through Mulharam to Forfot villages in Damboa LGA.

Villagers mobilised in search of Dala and later found his corpse bearing gunshot wounds.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and the hunters’ group visited the scene.

The remains were evacuated to the General Hospital, Damboa, where he was certified dead and later released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Nine Injured in Kwali Farmers–Herders Clash

Nine persons sustained machete injuries in a clash between Bassa farmers and Fulani herders in Gomoni Village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the fight, which broke out on Aug. 9 at about 3:30 p.m., followed alleged destruction of melon and maize farms belonging to the Bassa community by cattle.

It was gathered that the Nigeria army troops
along with joint team of operatives, and vigilantes were deployed to the scene following a distress call.

Six Bassa and three Fulani victims with varying degrees of machete cuts were taken to Rhema Foundation Hospital, Kwali, for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the situation had been brought under control and normalcy restored, while investigation was ongoing.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday attended the wedding fatiha of Aisha, daughter of Shehu Aliyu, an Executive Director with First Bank of Nigeria, and Muhammad Jalal, son of former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Talban Minna, at the National Mosque, Abuja.

The solemnisation, led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Adam, alongside other Imams, featured prayers for the couple’s blessings.

Vice President Shettima stood in for the bride, while Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu represented the groom, culminating in the presentation of the dowry and the formal tying of the marital knot.

The event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki, Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Emir of Borgu, Niger State, Muhammad Sani Dantoro among many others.
