EYN CHURCH AND THE POLITICS OF RITES OF PASSAGE
EYN CHURCH AND THE POLITICS OF RITES OF PASSAGE
By: Balami Lazarus
When one lost a member of his family where the deceased is a young man where both parents are alive to bury their son is really painful and disheartening leaving behind grieved siblings, relatives and friends. What came with late Kachalla David Balami’s death on the 7th November 2021 in Maiduguri was the politics of burial that is associated and well known with Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeriya (EYN)- (Church of Brethren in Nigeria).
When the EYN Church Polo in Maiduguri was informed of the demise of Kachalla, the church under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Emmanuel Kwaghi, in her usual characteristic, came up with so many questions and demanded for membership evidence. Is this biblical or rather playing politics with remains of the dead? EYN Church has worldly specialised and known to toying around with two things: burial and weddings. Attempt them with these two issues and you face avalanche EYN obstacles.
According to reliable sources, EYN Church Polo said late Kachalla was not one of their own and they don’t know him; however, investigation has revealed that one of his parents is a member and worshipped there. If you are to put forward the following questions to Rev. Emmanuel Kwaghi and his council of elders such as: Is there any chapter or verse in the Holy Bible that says a pastor must be the one to bury the dead? If EYN clerics did not bury the dead what would happen? Can EYN or any church prevent the soul of the dead from transienting to heaven? Capital NO. Why then play with the remains of the departed?

This ungodly doctrine and practises has never been a healthy stock for EYN churches and their members. I will put it to you EYN Church Polo, Rev. Kwagh and your board of elders that you have erred in your spiritual leadership. Do you know that EYN churches are very religious but not Godly in some of their doings?
The good thing about such happenings these days is the emergence of well-trained licenced christian clergymen to perform religious rites like burial, weddings and naming ceremonies including other christian activities as the case may be. And some of these pastors are professionals and independent in their own right. They can be hired to perform what the pastors of EYN churches are playing politics with.
Despite all odds, late Kachalla was given a befitting burial by a clergy of a recognised church of equal standard and reputation of EYN Church Polo Maiduguri. The politics at play in issues of this kind has to do with; who and what you are in the EYN church/ community? Ethnic affiliation to the majority at a given time. What is the amount of your financial/ material contributions? This is a big shame for EYN for shying away from the spiritual wellbeing of your members.
