FANSAN YAMMA Commander Seeks Stronger Military-Media Partnership in Fight Against Terrorism

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj. Gen. W.B. Idris, has called for stronger and sustained collaboration between the military and the media to support ongoing counter-terrorism operations and accelerate the restoration of lasting peace across the North West.
Idris made the call on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, when he hosted media practitioners to a media parley at the Theatre Headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State.
The engagement, described as the first of its kind since the commencement of military operations in the state, brought together journalists from across Zamfara for an interactive session aimed at strengthening understanding and cooperation between the military and the media.
The Theatre Commander described the media as a critical partner in the fight against terrorism, noting that the sacrifices being made by troops through sustained kinetic and non-kinetic operations needed to be complemented by responsible journalism.
According to him, the media occupies a strategic position in shaping public understanding of the security situation, strengthening national resilience and building public confidence in ongoing efforts to restore peace.
He said terrorists were increasingly seeking to exploit the information environment by spreading fear, attracting publicity and exaggerating their capabilities.
Idris therefore urged journalists to exercise greater responsibility when reporting terrorism and security-related incidents, particularly in the choice of headlines and presentation of information.
He cautioned against reports that could inadvertently glorify terrorists, romanticise their activities or give criminal elements the publicity and psychological advantage they seek.
The Commander also urged journalists to verify sensitive security information through appropriate channels and ensure that operational developments were reported accurately and within the proper context.
He said responsible reporting would help deny terrorists the opportunity to manipulate public perception while strengthening confidence in the efforts of security agencies.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Zamfara State Council, Ibrahim Musa Maizare, commended the Theatre Commander for initiating the engagement.
Maizare described the parley as a significant milestone in military-media relations in the state, saying it would enable journalists to better understand the security challenges confronting the region and the sacrifices being made by troops.
He pledged the continued support and cooperation of journalists in Zamfara to Operation FANSAN YAMMA and other security agencies in the collective effort to restore peace.
The parley also featured an interactive session during which journalists and the Theatre Commander exchanged views on security reporting, information management and ways of improving military-media relations.
Participants were subsequently taken on a visit to the Theatre’s Wall of Heroes, a memorial bearing the names of personnel of Operation FANSAN YAMMA who have paid the supreme sacrifice since the commencement of the operation.
The visit provided an opportunity for the media to appreciate the human cost of the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign and the sacrifices made by troops in the service of the nation.
The engagement came as security forces continue to intensify operations against terrorists and armed criminal groups across the North West, with sustained emphasis on both military action and non-kinetic measures aimed at restoring stability and rebuilding public confidence in affected communities.

Troops arrest soldier, recover 69 rounds of ammunition in Plateau

Troops of Sector 1, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have arrested a serving soldier and recovered ammunition and other military items during a stop-and-search operation at Babale Checkpoint in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The soldier, identified as 13NA/70/8069 Corporal Legedu Denebari, is serving with 109 Special Forces Battalion, Magumeri, Borno State, under Operation HADIN KAI.
He was arrested at about 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 2, 2026, during routine security checks at the checkpoint.
Items recovered from the soldier included one magazine, 69 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm Special ammunition, two Strike Force ballistic plates, two jack knives, one mobile phone, one power bank, one helmet, a Nigerian Army identity card and two pairs of camouflage uniforms.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier was on pass from his unit to Rivers State with effect from Sept. 2, 2026.
The soldier and the recovered items have been taken into custody for further investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the movement and possession of the ammunition and other military equipment.
The development underscores the importance of ongoing stop-and-search operations by security forces to prevent the unauthorised movement of arms, ammunition and military equipment across the Joint Operations Area.

Troops arrest four suspected motorcycle thieves, recover weapons in Plateau

Troops of Sector 4, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have arrested four suspected motorcycle thieves and recovered three motorcycles and weapons during an operation in Exland Village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The operation was conducted at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 1, following a report on the activities of suspected motorcycle snatchers operating in the area.
Sources said that the troops of Sub-Sector 41 deployed in Exland responded to the report and arrested four suspects at the location.
The suspects were identified as Yusuf Tahiru, 25; Ayuba Aliyu, 23; Anas Usman, 20, also known as “Kurra Berom”; and Ibrahim Muhammad, 20.
Following the arrests, troops conducted a cordon-and-search operation within the suspected area of activity and recovered three motorcycles believed to be connected to the suspects.
The troops also recovered one locally fabricated firearm, one cutlass and one knife during the operation.
The suspects and recovered exhibits have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by Operation ENDURING PEACE to tackle criminal activities, including motorcycle theft and armed crime, and strengthen security across communities in Plateau State.

Troops neutralise Boko Haram terrorist, recover AK-47 rifle in Lamusuri

Troops of the 120 Task Force Battalion, in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have neutralised a Boko Haram terrorist and recovered weapons during an ambush operation in Lamusuri, Borno State.
The operation was conducted at about 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 1, following credible intelligence on the movement of Boko Haram terrorists along a suspected route in the area.
According to a Special Situation Report issued by the Joint Task Force North-East under Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY V, the troops occupied an ambush position along the suspected terrorist route.
The troops subsequently sighted a group of Boko Haram elements moving through the area and engaged them, resulting in a firefight.
During the encounter, one Boko Haram terrorist was neutralised, while the other terrorists reportedly fled the area with gunshot wounds.
The troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one body pouch from the terrorists.
The successful operation followed sustained intelligence-led efforts by troops and their local security partners to disrupt terrorist movements and deny them freedom of action within the theatre.
The military assessment indicated that the general security situation remained calm but highly unpredictable, while troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remained satisfactory.
The latest operation further demonstrates the continued offensive posture of Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY V against Boko Haram elements and their logistics and movement networks in the North-East.
