Fed. Govt., International Agencies Launch State Action Plan For Durable Solutions On Internal Displacement

The federal government, in collaboration with international agencies, development partners, and three Nigerian states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, have advocated for a joint partnership in managing internal displacement in Nigeria.

The partners made the call today in Abuja, at the launching of the State Action Plan on Durable Solution to Internal Displacement for implementation in the three states of Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa.

Nigeria’s vice president, Kashim Shettima, assured the support of the federal government to make the action plan successful and beneficial to the displaced communities in the participating states.

He lauded the United Nations and its agencies and the international community for their commitment to address one of Nigeria’s most challenging problems.

Mr. Robert Piper, the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Durable Solutions, emphasised the importance of the action plan, urging the international community to rally behind Nigeria and its states to ensure successful implementation of the ambitious plan.

“This action plan represents a significant step towards providing long-term solutions to the challenges of displacement. It requires a collective effort and sustained support from all quarters,” he said.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, speaking on behalf of the Northeast Ambassadors Group, reiterated the UK’s commitment to assisting Nigeria in addressing the complex issues of prolonged displacement.

He assured continued support from his country and encouraged other international partners to contribute actively.

The Yobe state governor, His Excellency, Hon. Mai Mala Buni underscored the urgency of the collaboration to support the resettlement, reconstruction, and recovery agenda of the state government.

He appealed to both local and international donors to support Yobe government’s efforts in implementing the action plan to address the critical gaps and fast-track development in the state.

“We are determined to tackle the challenges of protracted displacement with a vision for sustainable recovery and development. We should work together to create lasting solutions that would not only address the immediate but also support long-term socio-economic growth,” Governor Buni stated.

In attendance were the governors of Borno and Benue States, representative of Adamawa State Governor, UN officials, UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, the World Bank, UNHCR, IOM, UN Women, World Food Program, UNICEF, among others.

The State Action Plan on Durable Solutions is designed to address immediate humanitarian needs while focusing on medium, and long-term socio-economic recovery and development of displaced communities.
