Five soldiers killed, three missing in clash with insurgents in Niger

Five soldiers were killed and three others declared missing following a clash between Nigerien Defence and Security Forces (FDS) and suspected Islamic State fighters in Sanam, Tillabéri Region of western Niger.
Security sources said the incident occurred on Feb. 12, 2026, during a confrontation between troops and suspected members of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) operating in the area.
The clash reportedly took place in Sanam Zone, a locality near the Niger–Mali border known for recurrent armed attacks by jihadist groups.
According to the sources, the soldiers were engaged in an operation when they came under heavy attack, leading to a standoff. Five personnel were confirmed dead, while three others were declared missing after the encounter.
The Tillabéri Region has remained a hotspot of insurgent activities due to its proximity to Mali and Burkina Faso, with security forces frequently conducting operations to contain armed groups.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the latest incident, while search efforts are reportedly ongoing to locate the missing soldiers.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled terrorist activity along the Kwanar Isa–Shinkafi road in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident occurred at about 10:35 a.m. on Sept. 29, when troops of 26 Battalion, Forward Operating Base Isa, responded to reports of terrorist activity along the road.
The troops engaged the terrorists, forcing them to withdraw from the area.
Following the encounter, the troops maintained patrols and dominated the area to prevent the terrorists from regrouping and threatening motorists and communities along the route.
Security operations remain ongoing in the area as troops continue efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of movement and strengthen security across the axis.

OPWS troops repel terrorist attack, recover rustled cows in Taraba

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have repelled a suspected terrorist attack on Gwamagira settlement in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, recovering rustled cattle abandoned by the attackers.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, when troops of 114 Battalion (Rangers) at Andami responded to reports of suspected terrorists riding motorcycles attacking the community.
The troops engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat and abandon the rustled cattle.
However, the troops discovered that the terrorists had killed one civilian and abducted three others during the attack.
The recovered cattle were subsequently returned to their owners, while troops launched efforts to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
Security operations are ongoing in the area as troops continue to search for the victims and pursue the fleeing attackers.

Troops rescue NYSC members after abduction in Imo

Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued some prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members after they were abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Onitsha–Owerri road in Imo State.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 at Umonuwa village in Mbaise Local Government Area, when troops of 34 Artillery Brigade responded to a reported kidnap incident involving two commercial buses.
Preliminary information indicated that the suspected kidnappers abducted 30 prospective corps members travelling in the two buses, while troops subsequently rescued some of the victims.
The troops, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police and Department of State Services, have launched a coordinated operation to track the perpetrators and rescue the remaining victims.
The rescued prospective corps members were handed over to the DSS for debriefing and further assistance.
Security agencies are continuing operations in the area, with further details expected as the operation progresses.
