Governorship Election Appeals: North East Women, others urges Supreme Court to do the needful

By Mallam Inusa

Amidst controversies surrounding the Gubernatorial election petition appeals in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states, the North East Coalition of Women in Politics (NEWPol) and Arewa Awareness Group for Political Stability (AAGPS), have urgently called upon the Supreme Court to thoroughly reevaluate the ruling of the Appeal Court.

This was disclosed to some Journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday by the representative of the two Groups, Hon. Bana Ba’ Malanjo after a peaceful protest.

Malanjo said, the foundation of a thriving democracy rests upon the principles of fairness, justice, and the expression of the people’s will through free and fair elections. Unfortunately, he claimed that the recent ruling by the Appeal Court has raised significant concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in Kano, Plateau and Zamfara states.

Malanjo on behalf of the Groups therefore pray and request that the Supreme Court declares Abba, Mufwang, and Lawal as the rightful winners of the elections in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states, respectively.

His words: “We want to first extend a warm welcome to all of you to this significant public gathering, where we aim to address crucial issues pertaining to our democracy.

“We would also like to extend our sincere greetings to the respected Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji, Dr. Abubakar Ibn- Umar Garbai Al Amin El-Kanemi and the resilient people of Maiduguri, Borno State.

“As we gather here today, we cannot ignore the prevailing situation in our country, particularly the escalating tensions in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara States, which have far-reaching implications for Nigeria as a whole.

“We, the coalition of various groups in Northern Nigeria, are deeply committed to safeguarding the interests, safety, and well-being of the good people residing in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara States.

“In light of recent developments surrounding the Gubernatorial election petition appeals in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states, the North East Coalition of Women in Politics and Arewa Awareness Group for Political Stability urgently call upon the Supreme Court to thoroughly reevaluate the ruling of the Appeal Court. It is our fervent request that the Supreme Court declares Abba, Mufwang, and Lawal as the rightful winners of the elections in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states, respectively.

“The foundation of a thriving democracy rests upon the principles of fairness, justice, and the expression of the people’s will through free and fair elections. Unfortunately, the recent ruling by the Appeal Court has raised significant concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states.

“It is imperative for the Supreme Court to meticulously review the evidence presented, taking into account the people’s mandate and ensuring that the true winners of the elections emerge victorious. This step is not only crucial for upholding the democratic principles we hold dear but also to restore public confidence in the electoral system.

“The citizens of Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara states deserve leaders who genuinely reflect their choices and aspirations. By declaring Abba, Mufwang, and Lawal as the rightful winners, the Supreme Court would be affirming the people’s mandate and upholding the fundamental tenets of our democratic ideals.

“To this end, The North East Coalition of Women in Politics and Arewa Awareness Group for Political Stability call upon all stakeholders, including political leaders, civil society, and the general public, to join hands in ensuring that justice prevails and that the will of the people is respected.

“We firmly believe that the Supreme Court, as the ultimate arbiter, will diligently consider the evidence presented and make a decision that truly reflects the principles of fairness and justice.

“In addition, it is important to acknowledge the significant contributions of Kano towards the welfare of Borno Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the Boko Haram insurgency. The people of Kano have demonstrated remarkable compassion and generosity by providing support, resources, and aid to the IDPs, ensuring their well-being and helping them rebuild their lives.

“Furthermore, we must recognize the commendable efforts of Kano during the administration of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in providing care and support for the 100 orphans whose education and well being was sponsored and are currently being cared for in Mariri, Kano State. Through various initiatives and programs, Kano has shown unwavering commitment to the welfare and future prospects of these vulnerable children, giving them hope and a chance for a better life.

“In conclusion, the Arewa Awareness Group for Political Stability remains steadfast in our commitment to fostering a robust democratic process. We firmly believe that the Supreme Court’s intervention in this matter is not only crucial for the resolution of the ongoing disputes but also for safeguarding the integrity of our electoral system.

“Our ultimate desire is for peace, peace, and more peace.” Malanjo stated.

Uromi Killing: NHRC Demands Protection for All Nigerians

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the recent gruesome killing of 16 traveling hunters in Edo State, who were mistook for kidnappers.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission Dr. Tony Ojukwu expressed deep concern over the horrific incident, which highlights the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for effective law enforcement and respect for human rights.

He said: “We commend Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his swift and decisive action in suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), and banning all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state, but more need to be done.”

Ojukwu said the Commission wishes to use this opportunity to remind the government and the people of Nigeria that every individual has the right to life, as enshrined in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution as amended as well as Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He equally said the Commission emphasized that the freedom of movement, as guaranteed by the Constitution and Article 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, has been grossly violated in this dastardly incident.

Ojukwu said: “We at the Commission demand that all the perpetrators be fished out and brought to justice. We call on the government to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future, there is no justification for jungle justice anywhere in the world.”

He emphasized that every Nigerian has the right to life, dignity, and freedom from violence, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or occupation, assuring that the Commission will continue to advocate for the protection of human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Ojukwu said: “We urge the Edo State Government to continue its investigation into the killings and ensure that all perpetrators face the full wrath of the law. On our part, we will continue to monitor the process of investigation to ensure that justice is served. This will serve as a deterrent to others.

“Promotion and protection of human rights is paramount to national development, let’s all imbibe the culture of respect for human rights and fundamental freedom to make Nigeria a better place.”

Angry youths in Iware, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, attempted to burn down the office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following the alleged torture and death of a suspect in custody.

Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makaka that the unrest began after Yunusa Kaka, 42, was reportedly tortured by security personnel at the NSCDC office in Iware.

Trouble started on March 30 at about 9:00 p.m. when Biliaminu Adamu, 24, was arrested for allegedly stealing two handsets and two packets of Benson cigarettes from Peter Majo of Iware Ward. While in custody, Adamu claimed he had given the stolen phones to Kaka, who denied any involvement.

Security personnel allegedly resorted to torturing Kaka in an attempt to extract a confession. He later became unresponsive and was rushed to Miyetti Allah Hospital in Iware by his brother, where he was confirmed dead.

News of Kaka’s death sparked outrage, with a large number of youths mobilizing to attack the NSCDC office.

However, security personnel managed to prevent the attack, and calm has since been restored to the area.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing.

NAN, AWALCO Partners to Promote ECOWAS Parliament

By: Michael Mike

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has pledged to partner the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO) to publicise the activities of the ECOWAS Parliament, particularly its 25th anniversary celebrations.

The Managing Director of the agency, Malam Ali Muhammad Ali,, made the pledge when the leadership of the association paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja on Thursday.

Ali while expressing appreciation to the association’s officials for deeming it worthy to pay him a courtesy visit, said as Africa’s biggest news content provider, NAN was home to all.

He said: “For deeming it worthy to come and pay us this courtesy call, the agency is appreciative.

“We hope that it will help the Parliament achieve its goals, and raise awareness, like you said, about its activities.

“On our part, the News Agency of Nigeria, like you know, is Africa’s biggest news content provider.”

He noted that the agency is the most authentic and biggest news hub in Africa, with a domineering influence and reach within the West African subregion.

Ali said: “So, with an association like this, certainly in the News Agency of Nigeria, you find a soulmate, a fellow traveler. You are welcome. We look forward to partnering and doing more, and the News Agency of Nigeria is your home.”

Speaking earlier, AWALCO President, Mr Innocent Odoh, explained that the purpose of the visit was to seek the collaboration and support of NAN, as the indisputable leader in terms of news credibility reportage, and viability.

He said that ECOWAS Parliament would be marking its 25th anniversary on November 16 and a series of activities had been lined up for it.

Odoh said that AWALCO, being the association of the parliament’s press corps, was fully involved in it by way of planning to give the occasion a media and publicity glitz.

He said this would help to propagate the ideals of ECOWAS in general, and ECOWAS Parliament in particular, and make the objectives of ECOWAS Commission and Parliament known globally, starting from the subregion.

He said: “In terms of viability, if we talk about the repository of news in all ramifications, in all dimensions, I think the News Agency of Nigeria comes first before any other one.

“So, what we are doing is in line with the media advocacy that we are projecting for the ECOWAS Parliament at 25.

“We can see that if the collaboration with NAN takes off as we planned it, I think it will go a long way in expanding the vision of the association.”

The AWALCO president further said that the partnership would determine how the regional bloc is run, especially at a time that so many things about ECOWAS needed to be interrogated.

“That is why we’re here, to seek that collaboration, to seek that support, how we can deepen that collaboration to ensure that the citizens of the Parliament understand what is happening around them.

“ECOWAS has a vision of 2050 but many people may not be aware of it, but collaborations like this can open up an opportunity for people to understand the vision of ECOWAS,” he added

on her part, Chief Communication Officer, ECOWAS Parliament, Mrs Uche Duru,, who was part of the delegation, in a remark, extended greetings from ECOWAS Parliament Speaker and Secretary-General to Ali and NAN’s management.

The spokesperson for the parliament said the association was beyond Nigeria, as its membership encompassed the entire West Africa, including even from member states that were threatening to exit or had already exited.
