Reports on the influx and sophistication of the Islamic State for West African Province, ISWAP  and the growing rate of protitution by women and girls in Borno state owing to their losses to the ongoing insurgency calls for concern.

The Borno state governor, Professor Babagana Umar a Zulum also said that the region in the last 12 years of the insurgency have lost about $6.9 billion dollars.

This was revealed on Thursday by the Borno state governor and northeast governor’s Chairman, Professor Babagana Umar a Zulum.

According to the governor, the Insurgents have destroyed over 5,000 Classrooms, 900,000 homes and damaged 713 electricity distribution sources and 1,600 water sources thereby denying innocent citizens good sources of drinkable water and electricity.

Speaking on the rate of prostitution, the governor said as result of the sufferings and lack of adequate care for people displaced by the activities of the Insurgents, hundreds of women and girls have resorted to prostitution in order to keep body and soul.

He said while the government is planning on the Repatriation, Return and Resettlement of IDPs in the North East of Nigeria, there are situations on ground which need to be addressed urgently to ensure safe return of these refugees.

Professor Zulum observed that poverty alone was not the driving force behind the insurgency in the region. Adding that ISWAP is becoming more and more advanced in their operations, which calls for serious concerns.

“There is a need to seek external support while efforts are ongoing to sanitize the security structures in the northeast,” Zulum said.
