International Women’s Day: Taraba Speaker Kunini, advocates Fair Deal For Women

The Speaker of the Taraba state House of Assembly, Prof. Joseph Albasu Kunini has Joined the rest of the World to Celebrate International Women’s Day.

He said that there should be a fair deal for women around the world considering that women have been relegated to the background for a long.

Going by the theme of the International Women’s day 2022 ‘Gender Equality Today for Sustainable Tomorrow for women, by women, the speaker enjoined women to pick up the challenge of competing with their male counterparts in fields of human endeavours rather than wailing and wallowing in self-pity.

“There’s no gainsaying the fact that women who constitute more than half of the world’s population bear the brunt of gender inequality, bloody conflicts, and discrimination because they are branded as the weaker sex.

“I have always been a strong advocate for gender equality and opponent of discrimination against women in the society. It is this conviction that prompted me to personally sponsor the domestication of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015 tagged, ‘The Taraba State Violence and Discrimination Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill, 2020’.

Kunini also noted that without the inclusion of women in the scheme of things, it is very unlikely that solutions for a sustainable planet and a gender-equal world will be achieved.

“Recall that after the 1995 Beijing Conference,  the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA) is a global agenda for ensuring the improvement of human rights for women and girls.

“The BPFA set strategic objectives for the achievements of gender equality in critical areas of concern such as poverty, education, and training, armed conflict, and economy.

“It was against this background that I personally sponsored the domestication of the VAPP Act, 2015 tagged, The Taraba State Violence and Discrimination Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill, 2020 which has since been passed into law by the State House of Assembly and assented to by the Governor, Ach Darius Dickson Ishaku,” he said.

Reiterating his stand, Kunini said he is of a strong belief that International Women’s Day is designed to help forge a gender-equal world without bias, stereotypes and eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in the world.

He, therefore, called on the women to make concerted efforts towards creating awareness about the importance of gender equality and a level playing field for men and women even as they come from various women groups and civil society organizations to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day.
