LGA Autonomy: UMAPO commend Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has been commended for his effort to gain the autonomy of the local government councils in the country.

The chairman of the of the United Marketers Association Potiskum (UMAPO), Alhaji Nasiru Mato, made the commendation in an interview with the newsmen in his office.

He said that the past leaders, right from President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari, tried their best to see that local governments get their own autonomy, but it failed because of the powers of the governors.

“But this tactical plan that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu applied for going to the Supreme Court straight is a welcome idea, and any judgment that the Supreme Court rules, nobody can talk, and this for the masses is a great development and also an achievement in politics.” Mato said.

Alhaji Nasiru Mato, who is also the ALGON Chairman Harmonised Traders Yobe State, said people get the chance, not the person they want to impose on them; those citizens want them to rule them justly and fairly.

“Before at the back, we don’t know that the state government is renovating schools; in the local government, they renovate school, buying chalk, constructing desks and chairs, and training and retraining teachers. And if you come to primary health centers, the local government purchases drugs, construction of health centers, among others; all this, the local government has done before.” he said.

“All this happened because, as a result of this joint account in which governors put the local government into their pockets, councillors have become a robber stamp, so if the local government gets their own autonomy, they will work more for the people, and the masses will get their own independence, because this is the last place where government connects with the citizens.

Alhaji Nasiru Mato further maintained that, in fact, we are supporting Mr. President 100 percent, and this will bring integrity to the president because some local governments get $700 million, some get $800 million, even some get $1 billion as a monthly grant. The question is, where does the money go?.
