Maiduguri Flood: UN Pledges Support To Borno Flood Victims

The United Nations (UN) has pro used to support the Borno State government in rescuing and assisting people trapped by the severe flood that devastated the state capital Maiduguri and its environs.
Mohammed Malik Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, made the announcement in Maiduguri on Saturday, while paying an assessment visit to the areas affected by flood.
Fall emphasised that the visit was aimed at gathering first-hand information on the flood victims and determining their immediate and long-term needs.
He disclosed that the floods have claimed the lives of 37 people, with 58 others hospitalised due to injuries and health complications.
Fall said: “Today’s visit to Borno was to meet with the affected flood victims, local authorities, humanitarian partners, government officials, and representatives from UN agencies and donors.”
The floods have so far displaced over 414,000 residents across Maiduguri and parts of Jere Local Council, while also damaging critical infrastructure, including bridges, hospitals, schools, and markets.
These disruptions have hindered healthcare services and business activities, further complicating the lives of those affected.
The UN’s top priority, according to Fall, is the immediate evacuation and rescue of people in high-risk areas, followed by providing essential supplies and support.
He also expressed concerns about the potential for disease outbreaks due to the flooding.
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, who was also present during the visit, called for a comprehensive flood disaster assessment in collaboration with the UN and development partners.
He said: “We need reliable data on the extent of damage to both lives and property,” stressing that the federal and state governments cannot manage the crisis alone.
The governor further mentioned plans for cash transfers to support the flood victims, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing the ongoing disaster.
As the situation evolves, both the UN and the Borno State government are working closely to provide relief and prevent further loss of life.

Troops neutralise two terrorists, recover arms in Zamfara

Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised two suspected terrorists during a fighting patrol in Zamfara State.
Security sources said the operation was conducted by troops of 1 Brigade Quick Reaction Force (QRF) from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bagega in the early hours of May 4.
The troops, while on patrol, advanced through Maikwanuga village in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, extending operations to Aljumma, Gidan Dawa, Magami Didi, and Tungar Magaji villages in Maradun Local Government Area.
During the operation, the troops made contact with suspected terrorists at Tungar Magaji village, where a firefight ensued.
“In the course of the engagement, two terrorists were neutralised, while others fled with possible gunshot wounds,” the source said.
Items recovered from the scene include one AK-47 rifle, 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a motorcycle.
The troops are currently exploiting the general area to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further threats in the region.

Army opens 2026 RSM Convention in Kaduna

The 2026 Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSM) Convention has been declared open in Kaduna, with senior military officials and stakeholders in attendance.
The event, hosted by 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, was inaugurated on May 4 at the JN Garba Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), represented by the Commandant of the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAIPKLC), Maj.-Gen. D.G. Allu.
In attendance were the Chief of Army Administration, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, commanders of affiliated formations within the division’s area of responsibility, resource persons, and representatives of other security agencies, among other invited guests.
The theme of the convention is “Empowering RSMs to Drive Combat Readiness and Professional Excellence.”
The convention is expected to provide a platform for professional development, experience sharing, and strengthening leadership capacity among Regimental Sergeant Majors in the Nigerian Army.

One soldier killed, another injured in ambush on troops in Imo State

Troops of 34 Artillery Brigade have been ambushed by suspected terrorists while on a mission to assess a burnt vehicle in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 12:53 p.m. on May 4 along the SPDC–Etekuru road, where the troops had gone to assess a burnt Hilux vehicle.
On arrival at the location, the troops came under heavy fire from the attackers.
In the encounter, one soldier was killed in action while another sustained injuries. The attackers reportedly carted away two AK-47 rifles and partially damaged a military vehicle.
Reinforcements were quickly deployed to support the troops, forcing the assailants to flee the scene.
Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the discovery of two burnt vehicles and two corpses.
The bodies were evacuated to a hospital morgue for further investigation and necessary action, while operations are ongoing to track down the attackers.
